I keep thinking this! very frustrating
fuck!
Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you donāt like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lolĀ
a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and weād really benefit from making that a thing again:
NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ānoā and āOTPā and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.
Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one personās kink may be another personās squick.
YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And Thatās Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.
DLDR: Donāt Like, Donāt Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A ālive and let liveā philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesnāt want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creatorās.
SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individualās personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.
As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what theyāre designing.
(definitions lifted more or less wholesale from fanloreās relevant pages)
bring the healthy fun back to fandom!
The pills meme but it's things i wish i had
when tf did pseudo legendary pokemon get renamed by gamefreak to powerhouse pokemon?? that's a stupid name, they should change it back
I turn 30 next month so hereās what I learned in my 20s:
ādonāt work for startups, theyāre always one āinnovative ideaā away adding āsell your kidneys on the black marketā to your job description.
ākeeping a collection of basic OTC medicine on you will save your life one day. I recommend Advil, Imodium, and TUMS.
āthose little single-use glasses cleaning wipes are 1000% worth the money
āoverly self-depreciating jokes just make people uncomfortable, wean yourself off of them
āyou can buy dehydrated mini marshmallows in bulk online and theyāre a godsend for hot cocoa
āpeople donāt care if you have fidget toys on your desk they just want to play with them
ātry to go to bed BEFORE the existential ennui kicks in
Also drink water and eat a plant
This is all GREAT. I turned 40 last week, so permit me to add what I learned in my 30s:
keep on not working for startups
sometimes there comes a point where the thing (fandom, hobby, friendship, romantic relationship) you loved no longer brings you joy. And that's okay. Try to mourn the loss, take joy in the memories, and don't burn any bridges in case ten years go by and you find yourself back in that fandom/hobby/relationship again
it turns out that (ugh) moderate regular exercise is (spit) good for you. The sooner you make it part of your life, the easier it'll be
related: if you throw yourself into a new exercise regime too hard and too fast, without stopping to rest or consider whether a particular move is good for you ... well, shoulder injuries are painful and consults with orthopedic surgeons are expensive
knees are bastards too
don't even get me started on ankles
there may come a time when your digestive system is too fragile for ibuprofin. I'm sorry
one day you're gonna wake up and realise you no longer give any fucks about some things that used to bother you
on the other hand, you might be alarmed to realise what you still give a fuck about
never get down on the floor without an exit strategy for getting back up
I turn 50 this year. what I have learned in my 40s:
"loving yourself" is less of a feeling and more of an action. you can start doing it any time and it will make your life better and better as you go on
this will happen incrementally - be patient
along those lines, if you haven't started making an active effort to quit shit-talking yourself, suck it up and do it
no, shut up. do it. "but it's haaaaard!" don't care. do it.
whether you like it or not, you are mortal and you need to go to the doctor for an annual checkup
stretch regularly - your future self will thank you
at some point you will encounter people much younger than you arguing passionately and incorrectly about history you personally remember and experienced
this will be infuriating and annoying
otoh, most other things just... will not matter to you as much
at some point you will shift from wanting to go out to being like "eh" and deciding to stay in. this is okay.
you will have absolutely no idea what The Youth are talking about and you will not care
but if you keep your mind open to new ideas you'll never be irrelevant
your company still doesn't love you - don't give them more than they pay you for
get a fucking hobby, especially a hobby that involves physically creating/handling something and/or moving your body in physical space. it will do you more good than you can imagine
Just turned 60 and let me say:
Find joy, every kind, it's always worth it
I'm talking that massive, never-ending Discord chat with your bestie? The one that makes you giggle through the day? It's not a "waste of time," it's what time was made for
If that's fanfic for your favorite characters who never even met on screen celebrate that!
If that's building a tiny fleet of snake villagers for your snake town and they just cover your mantel hell yes!
If that's collecting pillows and making a fort of them every weekend I'll be right over
Feeling and sharing joy is the whole point
This is too temptingā¦, so, Iām 74, and: donāt fund startups
Please keep stretching and exercise enough NOT to need an elaborate strategy to get up from the floor. IT MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE
Say bye to your employer as early as you possibly can, unless you really love your job. You wonāt be sorry.
Keep doing the annual checkups šš¼
Enjoy that fucking hobby youāve acquired in your 50, or find something new. Do try new things & adventures.

cole: they will sing songs about me and iāll be remembered as a hero :)
every knight including jaime lannister and arys oakheart 200 years later: yeah fuck that guy in particular.
Maybe one reason time seems to speed up in adult life is because when your full time job leaves you roughly 5 hours of free time a day plus two days off a week your life turns into a sort of monotony that makes the days blend together and creative pursuits move in slow motion as you can only get to them when other your commitments are done.
When you look back and think damn 2019 wasnāt that long ago where did the time go? Job. Your Job took it.
Was what we had real or cake
pillows have stopped having a cold side some time ago
Brienne doesnāt need to be the object of passionate desire. sheās the woman who teaches Jaime a better way to love. thatās infinitely more meaningful than reducing their relationship to physical attraction. to me, that actually cheapens what makes her unique. sheās not the intoxicating, all-consuming love. sheās the peaceful one. sheās the woman jaime chooses once he grows up. thatās the entire point of his arc.
Man, idk how to tell u this, but they want to fuck. Like, they want to fuck each otherās brain out. They want to bone. They want to have SEX. And then probably cuddle a little cause they are clingy like that but after that they want to have more sweaty steamy very loud sex, you know? Like they want to fuck for real and then some more.
Idk whatās up with this purity take. Stripping physical desire away from Jaime and Brienne doesn't elevate their relationship; it completely sanitizes it. Saying that physical attraction "cheapens" Brienneās uniqueness feels like a veiled excuse to desexualize her just because sheās ugly. Sorry, sheās ugly and Jaime still wants to fuck her and she wants to fuck him too.
(Iām not even going to enter here on the concept of Brienne serving only as Jaimeās self help book and therapist because again, is she even a character to you or just an accessory to Jaimeās path of self rehabilitation?)
And again I ask: whatās peaceful about their feelings for each other? Like, where this idea that their feelings are āpeacefulā (name: boring) came from? Because thatās not on page. Like at all. Thereās nothing peaceful about how they make each other feel. They get under each other's skin in a way nobody else can. Their feelings deeply unsettle them precisely because they are so incredibly strong. It is the definition of an intoxicating, all-consuming love, one that completely rewires Jaime's brain and troubles him from the moment he meets her and one that shatters Brienne's pre-conceived notions. Itās a crisis of faith for both of them.
A connection can be spiritually profound, emotionally transformative, and also incredibly horny, which they are you know. Horny. For each other.
A moment for one of my favorite lines of one of my favorite fics, by @chickren who always delivers no matter what:
still thinking about colored pencils so i drew the other milf of all time
cersei lannister
Brienne with oathkeeper and dunkā shield
my favourite thing about asoiaf is how it refuses to let you hate characters in a vacuum like yes they commit terrible wrongs but the narrative also hands you their reasons the grief the hunger, the fear the warped love that make those wrongs human it doesnāt justify them it doesnāt erase the harm but it complicates it in a way that feels so painfully real grrm is basically like hereās humanity in all its contradictions now sit with it and i think thatās weirdly so beautiful
itās crazy how grrm wrote the first woke beauty and the beast where a hot guy falls in love with an ugly woman and people will bend over backwards still to say brienne is actually attractive. like no sheās not and itās not more feminist to say she is š
