i know this is about fiction and fiction can get away with more because it's not real people, but also, i'm pretty fed up with this infantilization of adults. older men going after very young/minor girls will always be creepy and gross because it's about a power imbalance, but acting as if 18-24 is also Always Babey just because some women aren't very mature then is a disservice to all the women who ARE mature for whatever reason and are fully capable of making informed decisions about their futures. that includes relationships with age gaps.

some women at 22 are running households, caring for ailing parents or grandparents, raising siblings, running their own companies. some women are doing that at 20. it doesn't mean every single 20 year old is ready to make responsible decisions about dating someone older, but SOME ARE. and irl, you have to look at context and behavior and dynamics instead of just labeling every single age gap relationship "gross."

did he wait for her to turn JUST 18? does he display narcissistic tendencies and red flags like love bombing and isolating her from friends? did he primarily date women 18-22 before her and then dump them? has he never ever dated before and it's clear from his behavior why? ooooor....did they meet at work or over a hobby? does he treat her like an equal? does he have a range of experiences and relationships outside of her that he maintains? does he treat her respectfully but not obsessively?

sometimes men 18-22 are also really fucking immature, just like women CAN be. and that means sometimes a woman who is acting like an adult, living like an adult, with an adult's responsibilities, might have more in common with a man who already GREW UP and is 6-10+ years older than her. not every single age gap relationship BETWEEN ADULTS is toxic, and some women at 18-24 are REALLY ACTUALLY ADULTS. some aren't, which is why every single irl relationship requires careful consideration and evaluation and watching for red flags. but that's a case by case basis! and extending the minority of women into their adult years because SOME women aren't ready, or because SOME relationships are toxic, isn't fair to a lot of women who are responsible and mature.

any relationship and any age gap between adults (18+ in the states! i'm absolutely not advocating for minors dating adults!) can be toxic. in fiction, you're allowed to play with toxic relationships bc it's fiction and you have zero idea why someone is into that and what it means to them. in real life, the red flags for abusive relationships are the red flags for abusive relationships-- not age gaps. i'm sure you all know same-age relationships that ended up being toxic or abusive. eight years isn't abusive, but controlling behaviors are-- look at the power dynamics at play and the respect involved. call out abuse, not age gaps, or eventually you'll be in the position of crying wolf when a call out could really actually help identify something dangerous, and be ignored.
