Never Have I Ever Been to New Jersey (4x05): the story of Ben’s Columbia visit, told by his own face

It was one of those classic Jaren Lewison face journeys.

Ben went so quickly from nervous excitement, to full-on stressed out (complete with his trademark fidgeting, of course!), to looking like he was in need of a rescue/extraction mission.

His salvation, of course, took the form of an impromptu visit to Princeton later that night.

I was bored and made some Season Four related memes. I mostly made them to be petty about Ethan, but I got carried away. 😂

Something I found funny is how many people didn't understand Ben and Devi, and that's like one of my favorite things about this ship. And I'm not talking just about fans, I'm talking in canon. The girls don't understand them, they were like, why would you want to be with him?! but as the story progress, they get it, Devi is Devi when she's with Ben, and it's the same for Ben. Fabiola sees Ben under a different light when Ben talks about Devi breaking his heart, not because it's about Devi but because Ben is vulnerable. Fabiola is like damn you have a heart? And the little smile she gives them with Aneesa at the end of s4, perfect circle. The fact that Paxton gets it like even in s3 Paxton, told Ben, "She had something with you that we don't share" Yes he was talking about them being smart but in S4 when he smiled at them making snarky comments about eachother, he get it now.

I just love that, that EVERY person in Ben and Devi's life ended the show, understanding what they have (obviously, I'm talking about people who know they have a vibe). They did it too, and that's why I'm not worried about their future. They're going to be brilliant together

You made an interesting point. A lot of people like to pretend Devi liked Paxton more than Ben but that’s not true. She just showed a lot of devotion to him because of her idealized views on him. 2x01 does make it clear. She had Paxton where she wanted him. She could date him and have her dreams come true. Why complicate things adding Ben to the mix when she can enjoy Paxton all on her own? Simple. Her feelings for Ben overpowered her pursue on Paxton and if it wasn’t for Fab and Eleanor giving her a shallow advice (because they also fantasized with popularity) she’d have been with Ben. In fact, she didn’t want to break up with him. Paxton was an ideal she couldn’t let go of but for all of Season 2 is evident that she wants Ben over anyone else. The moment he is not longer available is where she circles back to Paxton but if Ben had asked her to be with him on that dance, she would’ve in a heartbeat. But that’s not where her journey needed to go.

I've said this before but I'll say it again: once Malibu happened it was already over for Paxton. Grieving, horny 15 y/o Devi wanted Paxton more than anything, that I will concede... but the moment Ben Gross showed his true colors and how genuinely he cares for her? Devi's heart stayed with him. She registered Ben's knack for supporting her emotionally and going out of his way to support the other relationships in her life, and her subconscious filed that away. It's why she pushes back on her friends' advice to choose Paxton -- because while, yes, he had always been the object of her eye, she knew instinctively that she'd found something far more valuable with Ben that day.

Also. The way she stares at Ben for 75% of the "I like you both so much" scene (2x02)? GOD. She was trying so hard to communicate with her eyes everything she wasn't able to say. That feels a bit tangential but, like, it's just another prime example to me of Devi's true feelings being lit like a neon sign above her head.
