"Wait--so you're into the whole ghost thing, clearly. How did you get started in that? Is that a side effect of Quantico or...?" She trailed, curious to hear more about his life. Just because it was different for her doesn't mean it was bad. Plus Bennett was not the poster child for what she assumed the affluent were like. Sure, he might have called their room Chateau Bennett once--but it was endearing when he did it. "Oh ok, fair enough--not as cool as we'd like it to be. Got it." She had a smirk on her lips as she listen to him list off names. "Austen--that's Pride and Prejudice, right? Are you as into that book as your sister?" Oops--wasn't she not supposed to bring her up? "I mean, you have a talent of things that usually dont interest me into compelling topics." What the hell was that, Nic? Someone really needed to slow her alcohol consumption. "Oh no--let me guess. No Mr. Derby to sweep you off your feet?" She shook her head, joining his laughter. "I--I mean, I'd say it was normal? I went to prom, didn't get prom queen, but I only went because my bro--" She cut herself off quickly and cleared her throat. "Because it was something you had to do once. And also because it looked weird when a cheerleader didn't go."
"Yeah, that's another FBI secret that we're not really supposed to tell.  Ghost studies is one of the tougher courses, because the ghosts don't really do what you want them to do half the time," he smirked.  "No, honestly I've just always kind of believed in ghosts.  I don't really know what started it, but I did hang out in some pretty old buildings when I was younger.  Maybe that had something to do with it."  An impressed grin spread across his face, only faltering a little as the knowledge of what actually went down tonight tried to let itself back into his mind.  "Oh, really?" he asked, raising an eyebrow as he wondered what she could have been referring to.  He knew half of what he said usually probably didn't interest anyone other than him.  "You got me. God, I pouted that I couldnât show off what Iâd learned. It was all... grinding. I didnât know how to function,â he shook his head, sensing that sheâd gone into territory that maybe she didnât want to talk about.  âA cheerleader, huh? I did not have you pinned for the cheerleading type, Iâll admit.âÂ
Consistency? From a playlist?  Not in this house, apparently. But hereâs an adventure.
Basically over the course of this afternoon there were several songs that I heard or thought of that Bennett likes, so weâve made a playlist. Itâs not as long as some, but Iâll just drop a link to listen here. Thereâs a theme but thereâs also some hard right turns in there, so good luck and welcome to the madness.

âWell, yeahâIâve got to round out my resume somehow.â Nic shot him a look, slipping from her seat and shutting the door quietly, shining the flashlight on his clothes. âBesides, donât tell me youâve never done this before, Barnes. Dressed in all black, snuck around not so open areas, looking for things you think are there. Youâre an FBI agent, this is like your bread and butter.â The blonde teased, returning his smirk with one of her own. Yes, she knewâshe knewâ his job was mostly involved with a computer and a keyboard, but if she had to be known as the cop who liked donuts, he got cliches too. Giving him another once over, she chuckled to herself over how stupid they probably looked. Even if they werenât in all black, they were damn near close to it, and with their flashlights she was sure they could have been auditioning for a heist movie. Tucking the light into her beltâyeah, she had a utility belt, so what?âshe pressed her finger to her lips and motioned for him to follow. âSo,â she said after they had gotten past the entrance of the yard and away from any possible threat of security. âSpend a lot of time in Graveyards, Carolina?â ( @bennettbarnesâ )
âAlright, youâve got a point,â he laughed, leaning back against the car as he waited for her to lead the way.  âThough I will say that the last time I did anything close to this was the time in high school that me and a couple of friends rolled our friendâs yard at a sleepover.â Theyâd come too close to being caught, but Bennett and his friends had laughed the entire time theyâd hid in the bushes and waited for the coast to clear. Bennett put his own flashlight into his pocket (heâd missed the memo on the utility belt), and followed her silently through the gates, trying not to make a sound until they were out of earshot of anybody else.  âCanât say I do,â he admitted, able to count the number of times heâd been in one on one hand.  âI havenât physically lost too many people, yet.â He chewed the side of his cheek, trying to find a way to keep their conversation a little lighter despite their location.  âWhatâs your stance on the ghosts, really? You think weâll find anything out here?â
â - visit a cemetery at night (nic)
Bennett hadnât really done Halloween-type things in a couple of years and heâd never been to a graveyard at night that he could recall. But he also never thought heâd move to Chicago and reunite with his sister, so things had been unusual for him this year. Dressed in all black, he climbed out of the car and grabbed one of the flashlights theyâd brought with them.  âSo, what? Youâre a detective, documentary aficionado, and now youâre gonna add âghost hunterâ to that list?â he asked her with a smirk, clicking the flashlight on and walking around the car to where she stood. âAlright, lead the way.âÂ

Nic narrowed her eyes, looking at the man in question incredulously. At least heâŠaverted his eyes? That had to be a decent sign, right? Not that, of course, she was unclothed butâoof, this was definitely one way to start the morning. âBennett Barnes.â She repeated, the last name feeling a tad familiar, but in all honesty it was a common last name. Perhaps she had just gone through a case with a last name like that. Note to self, ask Shawn if they had run in contact with a Barnes before. âUh, well, right.â She replied gruffly, feeling her cheeks start to redden with embarrassmentâa feat not easily achieved by most people. âThey might have. Iâve, uh, been pretty bad at checking my voicemail recently.â Did he really need to know that Nic? But it was trueâsince her mom called her, Nic had been avoiding that inbox like it was the plague. It was likely that buried deep in the messages the front desk called to let her know he was coming. Once again, fuck. âNot thatâŠyou probably care about that. Uhmâgive me a second.â Her apprehension had vanishedâcall it a detectives intuition, but he didnât seem bent on attacking her, so she tried to tell herself to relax. If he truly was her new roommate, attempting to tazer him (or worse) was not exactly the best first move. Well, neither was seeing her in a towel butâŠ.Nic had never in her life changed faster into normal clothes then in this moment. Sheâd failed to realize sheâd put on an old Police Academy shirt and shorts, but truly anything was better than a towel. Popping back out, she gave him another look over. Well, at least he was good lookingânot that Nic often measured character on whether a person looked good or not. âHiâIâm Nic. Nic Rogers. I guess that means Iâm also youâre roommateâI think thatâs how that works.â She smirked slightly, moving toward the kitchen. âBeer?â Her eyes drifted to his bags in the corner. âSo, I take it youâre not a native.â She could have determined he wasnât for a thousand different reasons, not least of which was the slight southern accent that sheâd detected early on. âAt least, to Chicago. Whereâs home?â
âOh, I totally understand. The only real reason I check mine is work, these days,â he admitted before she disappeared again and he was left standing in the room alone. He shoved his hands deep into his pockets, thinking to himself that this could have gone better and he could have been a little less awkward for once in his life. When she reappeared wearing the police academy shirt, things made a little more sense. Sheâd definitely been reaching for a gun. Fair, especially since it wasnât every day a person emerged from the shower to find a strange man standing in their apartment.  âItâs nice to meet you, Nic,â he nodded, eyes following her as she moved to the kitchen, lingering just long enough to be more than a casual glance. It wasnât like he could help it, she was beautiful.  âBeer would be great,â he nodded when she looked back at him, eyes following hers to his bags while he tried to collect himself into something that was less of the disaster he felt he was being.  âYouâve got me, there. Iâm originally from South Carolina. Then I graduated and moved north, and ended up in D.C,â he told her with a shrug, scratching the hair at the base of his neck.  âWhat about you?â
magnoliabarnesâ:
Lia held her phone so tightly in her hand as she excited the elevator, doing her best to keep her anxiety at bay as she read through the messages. She had spent enough time with Mr. Worthington to know when he was in a foul mood and, even through text, she was absolutely positive she was going to enter the office to a verbal lashing. In truth, it wasnât her fault that he couldnât find the information he needed for his meeting this morningâit was sitting on his desk, as it always did, from the night before. Magnolia was absolutely sure of itâshe placed it there herself. But, his ability to see what was right in front of his face as often skewed, especially when his ex-wife was in town. So, there she was, typing away rapidly on her cell phone trying to fix the problem as best she could to avoid him calling her at all. As her thumb pressed the blue and white arrow, a too familiar voice echoed loudly in the lobby and the blonde froze, her phone falling swiftly out of her hand and on to the floor. No, not in a million, bajillion years was that who she thought it was. There was just noâno way. He was supposed to be in South Carolina, right? Her mind flashed to when she first saw Jack again after all those years, her mind running to the same place. Apparently, South Carolina was not where these people stayed after all. Yet there were only two people in the entire world (apart from her momma and father) who ever used her full name at this point in her life, so there was no mistaking it. Lia spun on her heel faster than she ever had before, her blonde hair whipping around to face him. âBennett?â She said, face contorted in a mess of disbelief and confusion. Magnolia had never been one to be speechless beforeâbut this, this was something else entirely. âIâyouâBennett?â Her voice was faltering and her words felt stuck in her throat as she looked at her brother, trying to process it âIn Chicago?â
There were probably, no, definitely better ways to have done this, he thought while he watched the range of emotions play out on his sisterâs face as she realized what was going on and who was crazy enough to shout her name across a hotel lobby at seven-thirty in the morning. She was on her way to what he could only presume was work and for the first time in the last two minutes it dawned on him that he didnât even know what she was doing with her life now. It had been fifteen years since sheâd gotten on a plane to London, neither of them could have known back then that they wouldnât see each other again until now, but he still felt guilty. Sheâd needed him to be a big brother, to stand up to their parents sooner, and heâd failed at that. He had to shove that down, though. For years heâd been telling himself that he couldnât have known, that his parents were too good at being liars and he was the person they lied to the most. Blaming himself was going to get him nowhere. He was here now. Before he knew it, his feet were carrying him slightly forward, a small smirk forming on his lips.  âYeah,â he nodded, giving a slight shrug as he stopped walking and looked around.  âIn Chicago. Hell of a lot different than back home, isnât it?â There were a couple of beats of silence as he tried to think of what to say next and he shook his head.  âWhat are you doing here? When did you get back to the states?â Â
Theo James photographed by Rokas Darulis for ES Magazine, March 2017
Bennett had some time before his next assignment was officially going to begin, and he knew next to nothing about the area, so he decided to take the day to try to learn his way around his new home. Heâd woken up with the intention of maybe finding someone to show him around, but it was proving difficult since it was the middle of the week and everybody had their own jobs that they had to attend to. Until he figured out exactly how he was going to go about this, he decided to start the day off with breakfast and found himself in the lobby, sitting at one of the tables with a plate of waffles and bacon and a large coffee. Waffles were probably the closest thing to comfort food that he could find in a hotel in Chicago at seven in the morning, and he settled in to read the news on his phone while he ate, occasionally looking up to watch the flow of traffic through the lobby. His eyes landed on a certain blonde and it took everything he had to hang on to his fork and not send it clattering down onto his plate. What were the actual chances? He almost talked himself out of it, but after a couple of double takes, he was pretty sure he had the right person. It had been fifteen years and she was a full-grown woman now, but he was positive that was his baby sister. He stood, leaving his breakfast abandoned on the table and crossed the room to try to catch her before she could leave.  âMagnolia!â he called, his brain moving too fast to come up with a plan of what to do if heâd just made a fool of himself and gotten it all wrong.  âLia!â

nic flipped her head upside down as she wrapped her fluffiest towel around her hair. few things in her life was nic very particular aboutâcase in point, her desk in the bullpen had been considered a black hole on more than one occasion. her skills in the kitchen were less than desirable and she had no rhyme or reason for the way her room was set up. but the time she took to shower was a sacred space for herâthe only time she felt completely able to relax, let go and just be. her music would play loudly, her favorite towel would be on stand by and she even bough extra of her favorite body wash so if she ever ran out, she wouldnât be worried the scent wasnât in store for the season. it was her time and she protected it at all cost. living alone had helped, for sureâthough the nights had been lonely and nicâs own mental heath was struggling with the empty apartment, it did allow her to move freely about the space with no worries as to who might interrupt herâwhich was something she had come to enjoy. as she tightened the towel around her body, nic emerged from the bathroom. âShe was a fast machine, she kept her motor clean, she was the best damn woman I had ever seen,â she belted, her vocals leaving much to be desiredâbut then again, why should she care? no one was around to hear heâ âholy shit!â she shouted, dropping her phone and jumping backward as fast as she could, looking directly at the stranger standing in her living room. âWhat the hellâŠwho are you?â Nic raised her brow, her fight or flight response heightened significantly. Her hand instinctively flew to her hip where her holster was usually secured on her before realizing she was in only a bath towel. Fuck. âAnd why are you in my apartment?â
Bennett had only gotten into town about half an hour before he officially checked into the hotel. All he had of his own things were a suitcase full of clothes, a couple of his suits in dry-cleaning bags, and a backpack with his computer and a couple of books. The rest of his stuff was going to be sent later from his apartment back in Washington, and he hoped it would catch up with him soon, because he hated moving and hated having to re-establish himself in a new place. The apartment suite heâd been given was nice, and was told at the desk that he already had a roommate. Once heâd taken his bags to his room and started checking the place out, he started piecing together some of the personal details of his new roommate by pictures and things that had been left out around the room. He was just considering whether or not it would be rude to leave without introducing himself so he could at the very least go get something to eat and maybe explore the city a little bit whenever his phone went off in his hand and he looked at the screen to find a couple of messages from his friends back at the capitol and one from his supervisor asking if he was getting settled in. The timestamps were already long enough, and he didnât want to leave any of them waiting too much longer, so he began responding to them. Whenever he heard the singing he looked up, turning to the direction of the voice, and then dropped his phone when sheâd yelled and jumped.  âOh- Oh my god, I am so sorry,â he said, trying to avert his eyes and not seem like a creep.  âIâm Bennett Barnes, and Iâm your new roommate. They must not have told you I was coming,â he explained, eyes catching the movement of her arm as it went to her waist.
