Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five
"You only have yourself to blame."
the sky seems murky.
he watches the vast blankness and wonders what the stars would have looked like had the brightness of the city not been muting them. a numbness settles into his bones as he drifts in and out of his musings; in and out of consciousness, really. in this instance, he ceases to exist and it's the greatest high he's ever been on.
she's standing over him, all legs and venom. it would have been quite erotic had the circumstances been different.
though he wouldn't have been able to hear her words anyway his ears still feel clogged as his senses dull. lush lips move too quickly for his befuddled mind to follow and; in time, he gives up trying all together.
he lets his fingers gloss over the sticky warmth staining his shirt and his eyes close as a rasp of a laugh forces its way from his lips. once again, he was the punchline of fate's morbid sense of humor. men like him weren't meant to live. where had he heard that before? it sounds like something he would say. maybe he'd been on one of his benders and fell into a self-loathing rough patch when he'd said such a thing. in all honesty, half the shit he said was just that: shit.
you only have yourself to blame.
the edges of his vision blur but he can focus on her lips long enough to catch it. he can do without the i-told-you-so's in his final moments but if she was hell-bent on rubbing salt in wounds then he'd take it.
"... y... eah..."
after all, denying the truth never changes its validity.

"Was..I not good enough?"
"Why would you say that?"
"Was it something I did?"
"Was it..something I said?"
"How could you?"
"I don't miss you.."
"I miss you so much, my heart bleeds when I think of you.."
"It's my fault.."
"I should have been there."
"I'm..so..so sorry I couldn't protect you."
"You're dead to me."
"Maybe he was right."
"Maybe she was right."
"I'm not worth your while, am I?"
"Am I so insignificant?"
"I need you."
"It's your choice, now you have to live with it."
"I want to be once again with you."
"You choose the road, love. And I'll make the vows."
"You had it coming."
"You only have yourself to blame."
"I only have myself to blame."
"I have only tears to shed."
"My heart is black and my mind is darkness.."
"The truth is, we're both frauds."
"At least you had good intentions."
"He was too strong."
"I hate this life."
"Once something is truly lost, one can never get it back again."
"You had better start believing in nightmares, you're in one."
"Don't worry about my falling limbs and broken heart, my stitches feel no pain. I love you, that's all that matters."
"You just have to let it go."
"Some things happen, and there is nothing you can do about it."
"This the end."
"Scream all you want, no one can hear you."
"No one can save you now."
"Rest in peace."
"You will never see the light again."
"Lost.."
"Just let me die."
"Just leave me behind."
"I won't say it to him, but he's got us beat."
"There is still a way to defeat you."
"Fine, knock yourself out. I mean it."
"You're not a cat. You're a rat."

“10 Word Poem" series - #70 (via kreslas)
The true traveler is he who goes on foot, and even then, he sits down a lot of the time.
Colette, Paris From My Window, 1944
[`whether the request had been a hollow one or not, merely a ruse to get somewhere private they could talk, he still goes through the motions to start the coffee brewing — two cups, strong. it’s taking more to keep him running these days, but nic doesn’t need to know that. he doesn’t know anything that’s transpired in sungjoon’s life since they last crossed paths and he aims to keep it that way. when he turns and leans against the counter to wait he’s greeted with a single word scrawled across the page. brows draw in briefly before he speaks.] That’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time. [`he feels he’s disappointing the other, but in all fairness he can’t be expected to know more than nic about a family that can’t be spoken or thought of without twilights in the same breath. something must have happened, for him to be coming to sungjoon now. despite his misgivings he nods, brief and vaguely noncommittal.] I’ll see what I can find out. What’s goin’ on though?
[` nic had expected this much -- he and sungjoon hadn't been running in the same crowd for a while now. his leads had taken him to south korea, though, and he figured it was worth a shot. ] . . . [` his gaze cuts over to the male just in time to catch the tail endings of his words. a gruff rasp left his lips and he propped his elbows on his knees, body hunched over as he tried to find the words to describe the current situation. flipping the page on the notepad, he scrawled the name down and held it up for him. ] Worrick. [` he didn't know whether elaborating would be a good idea -- getting someone else involved might not be the best idea. dragging his tongue over chapped lips, he tossed his head back before dragging his finger slowly along his neck. whether sungjoon would get his meaning or not, he knew the he'd understand that the situation was grave. he could care less about michel right now -- a fact that could possibly get him killed. ] . . . Deep shit. [` he rasped and pushed the messy strands back from his face; expression cold and a darkness in his eyes that told more than he ever could. ]
A man is a god in ruins.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (via facina-oris)
[ arm yourself , ] because no one else here will s a v e you.
[`it’s not the first time it’s occurred to Sungjoon in Nicolas’ presence that he should learn sign language and it won’t be the last, but there’s no missing the impatience in that dismissal and the true meaning of his request for a cup of coffee; it’s synonymous with privacy, something that cannot be discussed in the open. there’s only one place left to go.] C’mon, this way. [`walks on past him and starts toward his apartment building, glancing over his shoulder before he cuts across the street and leads them through a narrow shortcut to emerge within minutes at the lot behind the building; there’s a rickety metal staircase serving as a fire escape and he pulls his keys out as they climb, silent until they reach his apartment door.] I’ll find you somethin.’ [`switches on the light and before he even starts the coffee brewing, he disappears into the bedroom and emerges with a notebook and pen, dropping them on the table.]
[` it's not surprising that sungjoon hasn't bothered to learn sign language, he doubts he ever will. hell, nic wasn't even that great at it himself -- thank god for his gifted eyes and their ability to read lips so well. a gruff nod was tossed in the other's direction and he shifts his gaze around once more before following after him. he skirts through the narrow pathway and takes the staircase two steps at a time. nic is not a patient man, that much he shows clearly. he feels sluggish lately but he refuses to let it show as he enters the man's apartment. it's bare; pitifully so, and he plops himself in a chair as sungjoon disappears. the notebook and paper that's dumped before him forces a snort of out of him and he lifts a thick brow as he glances up at the male. it was clever, though, and was nic was grateful even if he'd never say it. ] Monroe. [` the word was written in clear-cut penmanship, each stroke deliberate, and he held the notebook up by its spine to show the other. simply put, he needed information and sungjoon was his fountain of knowledge. ]

⌖ -- My muse's reaction to accidentally shooting your muse.
A wolfish grin rested on his lips as he watched the body fall over and he imagined the satisfying thud that it'd make. It was times like this he really wished he wasn't deaf -- something told him he'd love the sound of bodies crashing to the ground, of guns firing, and steel against steel. But he'd never been one to cry over spilled milk so to speak. It was done, he'd never known those sounds to begin with and would never know them.
Using the toe of his shoe, he turned the body of the male onto his back and tilted his head at what he found. Still breathing, still alive; he'd live. Of course, he'd always been pretty lousy with a gun and had other preferred weapons of choice. He crouched down over the body and roughly pushed back the strands of hair from the male's face. What he was searching the eyes for he couldn't really tell himself either.
The gun was still clutched in his hand and he didn't even register the wounds littering his own body. "Troublesome." His voice was gruff and laced with annoyance as he stood back up straight. "You'll live." Stepping over the body and slipping the gun back into the holster at his waist, he made a mental note to check off the lead he'd been following. There was nothing left for him here. Tossing a glance over his shoulder as he walked away, he vaguely caught the sight of the man pushing himself up. If they crossed paths again, he'd make sure he didn't miss.
Onto the next.
[`the hoarse quality of that voice struck him as familiar immediately, though it was a shock to hear it in Seoul considering where they’d met. Eyes narrowed just slightly as he gazed toward the source — as if doubting what they were seeing — he complied after a pause. It was only once he’d gotten close enough for a private conversation to be held that he spoke up, leaning lightly against the brick wall.] Nico. What are you doin’ here?
[` the grimace that immediately spread over his lips indicated his displeasure with being forced to use his voice again. instead, his tossed a hand up and lazily spun it around as if to say, "same shit, different day." and carelessly dismissed the subject. he couldn't divulge the details of his "mission" but if anyone would understand then he knew it'd be sungjoon. pink poked through his lips as he wet the cracked skin, gaze shifting around: "there are too many people." ] ... 'ffee ... Co' ...'ffee. [` jamming his hands into his pockets, he stood with that forever disgruntled look printed on his features and waited for the other to jolt into movement. ] ... [` the scowl deepened and he jerked his thumb over his shoulder: "get your ass in gear." ]

☂ — My muse encounters yours just as it starts to rain.
He could smell it in the air, smell that the rain was coming. Sharper senses were the only perks to the loss of one.
The look on his features was one of irritation; brows knit together, scowl curling his lips, and shoulders tense. The kind of jobs he'd been forced to take as of late seemed to be getting more and more demeaning. The cat tucked under his arm wiggled in his hold and clawed angrily at his arm. For fuck's sake, he was a killer -- ruthless one at that. He hadn't done this sort of thing since Wor-- since he'd been working with that normal. But that was neither here nor there any longer. At least things still felt like he was still back home.
Home. He scoffed at the thought of considering Ergastulum home. That ghetto had been his prison and he would have been left to rot there if he hadn't gotten in his right mind. It was inconsequential now, he never planned to go back -- no matter how many came after him in the attempts to drag him by his heels.
Gaze clouded, he stopped briefly to rub roughly at his eyes with calloused fingers. The blurring didn't cease, however, and he groaned lightly before pushing his tousled locks back. Just like his nose had predicted, the raining started in light drops causing the cat to get frenzied in his hold. Fucking Christ. He was never taking another animal rescue job again in his life.
That's when he saw her. Only a few paces in front of him, body angled just enough for him to glimpse her face. He'd seen her around before, their line of work seemed to force their paths to cross. This time, however, it seemed he was her job.
Fuck the cat, he'd been itching for this kind of action all day. She was tall and that fact alone seemed to irritate him more than anything else. I really hate when women are taller than me.
