Ben physically groaned at her joke, his eyes rolling back farther than he thought possible. “I adore you, but you’re impossible to deal with sometimes. Just hold still.”

“They look worse.” Once, she would have swatted him for that, or at least reminded him of their own unfriendlier days. But now she ignored the grumbling and sat still, letting him work. When had she gone so soft?

“I don’t doubt it,” Ben chuckled. He moved to start wiping the blood off her face, taking care not to be too rough with the cloth. “Just tell me if it starts to hurt.”

“Thera, I want to fuss. Please just...” Ben began to grumble under his breath, wetting a clean cloth to get the blood off her face. “At least let me clean you up. You look a fright.”

At least he hadn’t tried to say it in French.

“I am Ben Tallmadge. Just... new and improved,” he teased, leaning closer towards her. “So, what do you say?”

“A crush?” Her voice, following another few seconds of her jaw hanging loose on its hinge, didn’t quiet in the least. “You did this because you have a gods-damn crush? Your dick is leading you around like a carrot on a stick and you think that makes it alright?”

He wasn’t saying that, not truly, and some small corner of her mind knew it; he’d turned so pale he looked like a second moon in the dim light, but she was still too angry, too furious, too damn betrayed to cut him any slack at all. “You knew I would leave? You’re damn fucking right I will, and that moment is right now.” She shoved up off the blanket, shoulder slamming against his as she stalked by, heading for her tent.

“And you know what the worst part is?” Thera spun on her heel for one final shot, “It very nearly damn well worked.” And she might have been just as annoyed at herself for her gullibility. Her teeth grit before she turned away. “I trusted you, you treacherous piece of shit.”

“No I didn’t think it was alright, Thera. I knew it wasn’t alright. But I did it anyways. I let my feelings get ahead of me and I didn’t know what else to do. I... I’m sorry.”

He ran after her, trying to reach for her arm, only to almost smash into her as she turned around. That’s when he found himself face to face with her in all her anger. “Thera.... Thera please wait...”

“Welcome?” Thera’s eyebrow lifted. “An admirable sentiment, sir, but I find being dragged back to your camp under an endless array of verbal and physical threats to not be ‘welcoming’ in the least.”

She didn’t even glance toward Tallmadge, keeping her attention of the General. “However, I will point out that despite this I am here as a gesture of goodwill, and the fact that I cannot be bothered having your officers dogging me all over the damn countryside. May I gather that I am now considered a prisoner of war and therefore entitled to treatment under your associated regulations?”

Washington glanced over at Ben with a stern look before turning back to Thera. “I am, of course, not entirely aware of the methods Major Tallmadge used to return you to the camp, but please be aware of the fact that I insisted against violence and threats at all costs. If any grievances were made, I do extend my most sincere apologies.”

“As for the subject at hand, you are to be considered a prisoner of war until we can confirm otherwise, therefore you are entitled to all the treatment of our regulations.”

“Aaand not a single word I said actually goes in.” Language? That was all that registered with him, the fact that a woman could cuss? “No, Caleb. I am not giving Ben Tallmadge a pity-fuck so he can vomit all over me instead of the greenery. Go ask around among the camp followers, I’m sure one of them will spread for him and make your sad little day better.”

And in fact … she was outside the camp, she had all her belongings … she may as well make the escape she planned from the start. Thera turned on her heel and started walking.

“Alright alright look,” Caleb said, glancing back at Ben for only a minute before chasing after Thera, “Look I know it’s stupid. I’m sorry. It was my idea, not Ben’s. But I’m begging you, you don’t have to shag him or even kiss him, just come with us. Please.”

He walked until he was right in front of her. “Please?”
