𝐆𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐔𝐓 was the only task that plagued Mercy Williams’ mind. Remove the junk ( which was nearly everything ), clean the house, fix what’s broken, put it on the market, leave. That was the game plan. Her only goal being to take the money from her mother’s house— church being the only reason to call it that— and go somewhere far, far away. Never to come back. For real this time. The place was a mess. Empty bottles, cigarette buds, piles of dishes, trash, whatever you could think of, it was there. The place looking as if it’d been abandoned for years, not just a month.

It felt like it had been days since Mercy started getting to work on making the place look decent and before she’d knew it, there was some dent within the mass of chaos. For one, you could actually see the living room floor— minus the two piles that sat in the center. Donatable trash and actual trash. Hearing a soft tap at the threshold of the entrance, Mercy quickly shouted over her shoulder, “You can just leave it at the door!” Light hues not even bothering to glance behind her and instead, she kept her focus on the inside of the room’s closet— bent at the knee, pulling out two more beat up boxes from inside.

“’Fraid I can’t just leave this at the door.” Curiously, blue eyes peered around at what looked to be a clean out of the residence. This didn’t quite strike him as someone getting their shit together and deciding to pull themselves out of a rut they buried themselves in. In fact, this scene had been something he’d come across a time or two in this town. One time, years ago, the residence had been not too far from his parents home in Suffix Mills, and the late homeowners had no next of kin so it was left on the good samaritans to clear out the house and fix it up. It had been a hell of a project, one that Ben had actually enjoyed when it came to the repairing part of it all. He was someone that liked to used their hands.

“Do you know who’s truck this is out here?” Thumb jutted back over his shoulder, indicating the faded blue pickup blocking half the street. It was okay to get around, it was just a hazard and could cause an accident. A moment later, Ben added --- “Everything alright in here? Need any help?” It looked like a lot of work and possibly heavy lifting for one person. Just a few weeks ago he’d helped his baby sister Eleanor move into her new place, Ben was fairly certain he still had the dolly in his truck. It dawned on him then that the truck might have been for loading up all the trash she seemed to pile up and take it to the dump. Assuming wasn’t something he was keen on doing though.

“Ugly bastard.” she singsonged while she walked on the sidewalk, clearly knowing people would think she was out of her mind. “Come here, little shit.” Those were only some of the names she called the stray cat she had been known to hate despite having gotten him some eye medication when she noticed one of his eyes were full of gunk. A pair of oven mitts were tucked under her arm and she was shaking some cat food in a bowl.

“There you are you fat….” The brunette straightened up when she saw someone, cursing beneath her breath as the cat got scared off simultaneously. “Sorry, I’m trying to call my cat over who has no name.” Apart from the selection of insults she called it. “I swear I tolerate the thing but he drives me crazy so…” she shrugged. “I’ve been trying to catch him to give him his medicine. Maybe if you see a black cat around, holler my way …. unless you’re free.”

It was an easy scene to understand. Well, at least the searching gaze and the shaking of the food bowl. Ben hadn’t quite figured out the purpose of what looked like oven mitts under her arm, then again, perhaps she ran after the cat when she’d been in the middle of something. That line of thinking sent him on a brief train of thought reminding him to stop by the diner and grab some pies. Naturally his phone chimed with a message at the wrong time and his shifting to grab for his phone in his pocket startled the hunted animal and it ran off.

“Sorry ‘bout that.” Ben called out, holding up his phone for a brief few seconds. His ears were taking in her response as he tapped out a reply to his buddy and employee at the shop, nodding to let her know he’d been listening. “I think anyone knows that calling and chasing after a cat rarely works. He’ll come to you when he’s ready.” There was a small amused grin on his lips as he dropped his phone back into his pocket and he closed some of the space between them. “All this, uhh, extra effort, will likely take him longer this time around but I can’t say I blame him. Whatever you’re planning to do to him doesn’t look pleasant.”

THE RATTLESNAKE, SUNDAY EVENING - Elizabeth dropped her daughter off with her friend and their mother who invited her to go out for the week with them to some lodge that they had and she agreed, though she knew she would miss Hope with everything in her being. To keep her mind at ease, she headed to the local bar and decided to have a few drinks. She was on her third drink when a familiar presence graced her causing her to smirk and pull out a piece of their clothing from her bag. “I think this belongs to you,” she said, letting the article of clothing rest on their shoulder. “Figured you might want it back.”

“I think you’ve got the wrong guy, Liz. I’m too good for something like that.” As he settled into his spot at the bar, Ben nodded to the tender and ordered himself a pint. After a long day at the shop and a hard scrub on his fingers to get them as clean as he could of the grease, a little unwinding was much needed before he headed on home. Ben’s fingers curled around the garment and it was hung on the back of her seat. “I don’t want to know what you’ve been up to either, so don’t bother spilling.” A charismatic grin had been flashed her way and Ben pulled his cell from his pocket, checking for any notifications from his teenaged daughter Mia trying to get ahold of him.

I remember I was always enamored by and loved motorcycles as a kid. My grandfather had motorcycles and I remember going for a ride and then after that I was hooked. And then in first or second grade, I ganked (stole) a book from the library just because it had a dirt bike with trails. It was one of those things where as a kid, the world is your oyster as far as what you can do, and you don’t associate jobs and things with making money.
