From the measurable to the immeasurable, from form to formlessness: my project for a seminar course I am taking as a student (for the first time in three years!) at Ryerson. This particular dress was designed in collaboration with @absolutely_adam, and is comprised of two variants of flat soft, light vinyl pieces which act as a set of instructions that guide the development of the garment. They are folded in a number of different configurations and “locked in” with lightweight Chicago screws. This work was inspired by Evan Douglis’s collection of projects and essays entitled “Autogenic Structures”. Instead of superimposing a design onto a pre-existing dress pattern, we were interested in applying parametric principles to the body with minimal computational intervention, so that, as David Ruy remarks in the introductory text, the “internally generated feature is essential to the expression of the whole”. Swipe right for a short animation of the fold we began with which is modelled in Douglis’s publication, as well as the superimposition of 4 angles of the dress into one image. To quote David Ruy twice more: “The manipulation and delivery of affects through an extreme engagement with formal logic is rational in its micro-developments, but deeply irrational in its results.” - “Though systems of measure are exploited to the fullest, the targeted outcomes are nothing that can be easily measured, nothing that can have a number attached.” I think some parts could have been draped better, but this was an interesting experiment! #fashion #design #architecture #parametric https://www.instagram.com/p/B4nvY9Lgwi7/?igshid=110999pcpfoyu
