fresh fruit was a precious commodity, better than candy. ellie would guess that she'd probably tried fresh berries only a handful of times in her life. proper nutrition was hard to come by in the quarantine zones, and the soldiers always took priority when it came to rationing. they attained the richest meats as well as newly harvested crops, whilst the lowly citizens continued to squabble over scraps. ellie's stomach was so attuned to the repetitive cyclical manner in which she consumed these stale, bland foods she wonders if the sharp taste of ripe strawberries will simply send her body into shock. her mouth begins to water at the mere prospect of it.

“ uh, sure. ” she's fairly tentative to accept his offer, having been raised her entire life to be on her guard with strangers. but there was an innate warmth to frank's demeanour that took the chill off of her intrinsically frosty manner, her arms automatically unfold at the sensitivity of his soft voice and she opens herself up to his proposition. “ i'm guessing you're the gardener around here. bill doesn't really seem like the type. ” the couple seemed to ellie to adopt two distinct roles within their relationship: protector and nurturer, bill and frank each representing the two fundamental sides to love and life in their otherwise difficult lifestyles.
