This shore crab bubble bath is helping us (and the crab) breathe a bit easier.

Shore crabs (Genus: Pachygrapsus) are delightful denizens of the intertidal, often seen scurrying about and darting deeper into cracks as tidepooler shadows pass overhead.

When the tide is out, the crabs can often be seen with a head of foam whipped up with fluttering, feathery maxillipeds—the little face-legs that usually pump water over the crab’s gills.

These bubbles are thought to help the crab increase its breathable surface area until the crab can scuttle back into a watering/breathing hole 🌊🌬🦀

Romeo colouring mostly consist of red, orange, black and white but my trusty macro lens managed to catch small blue drops on the base of his tail. Simply amazing.
