Deep Forest - Sweet Lullaby

I’m coming at you with a weird one this week which is really out of the ordinary for me, I know, but bear with me. I’ve been on a “female vocals & ethereal sounds” kick this week, which was triggered by American Horror Story’s nod to a rumor about Fleetwood Mac frontwoman Stevie Nicks that has been following the songstress around for decades. Now I could have brought you some Nicks tonight, but I think it’s better to give someone else a chance at that sweet sweet Sunday Night Soundboard Glory.

Deep Forest is a New Age/World music group from France and they have some excellent chillout music. I first heard Sweet Lullaby on Tumblr, but not recently. It was way back in 2009 when I was a little Tumblr baby when someone I followed told a story about how the track made them nostalgic for their childhood when the song was used in a PBS special. The story was really interesting to me and the song was cool and I’ve been giving it a good bit of play these last few days (along with some Wynter Gordon & Denali). I thought a few of you’d be interested in hearing the song tonight.

Anyway, hope everyone has a fun week (and that you’re all safe at whatever Halloween parties and drinking. One drink and you should be alright, but more than five doses breaks the delay barrier, and the formula works instantly. You’ll start to shrink… start to… grow fur. Start… growing a tail… wait what?

Dave Porter - Breaking Bad (Main Title Theme)

Last week we touched on the idea of music that is representative of it’s respective decades, and this week I’m going to sort of do the same, except not really? It’s more about pop culture phenomena and how they reflect on the era they were born out of. A lot of people hear “the 80s” and think Cyndi Lauper and The Breakfast Club. “The 70s” solicits mental images of the Farrah Fawcett hairdo and maybe your parents in unfortunate school photos or something, I don’t know. Now, I don’t know who would be willing to deny the cultural keystone that Breaking Bad has been (at least for people on social networking sites). I mean, seriously… there have been a few events that were exponentially more enjoyable because you were enjoying them with people on the Internet (The 2012 Presidential debates, Twerkgate 2013) and none have really been quite as consistent as these last few episodes of Breaking Bad, which will air it’s finale in a few hours. I’m not sure what the next event we’re all going to flip our collective shit over will be, but I look forward to it.

The Kubricks - Waster

Hey, all! Max here, filling in for Callie. Since it’s not my regular night, I decided to find something in the music you guys have been sending us! Didn’t have to go very far down the message box to find something I like … Sorry, person who sent us an even better song long before Dave T. from The Kubricks did. Them’s the breaks.

The London-based Ska-Pop septet (I can now cross “use the word ‘septet’ in a sentence” off my bucket list) have released an EP, Wasters & Wannabes. which you can listen to on Soundcloud and buy on iTunes. I’ll let Dave take it from here.

Crystal Butterfly - Crystal Butterfly (Theme)

First of all, switch on some mean speakers. Have you seen Drive? Well I’m convinced the official ambient 80s revival starts here. I met the mind behind Crystal Butterfly this week in a musical shack, somewhere far into the Somerset depths. I’ve often ranted on here about atmosphere being the key element of tracks; I don’t see how a tune could get more atmospheric than this. He himself proclaims to make revitalised movie themes similar to Miami Vice and such, and I think he could really take his music far, considering the current retro boom.

I sincerely hope you check out Crystal Butterfly and don’t just whizz past it on your dashboard just because you haven’t heard of it. Help support bands and artists who deserve the exposure!
