Minute Details in Grease Part One
Welcome to something that I will hesitantly call a series but will likely forget to continue in a consistent format - pointing out details in Grease that I have noticed over the years (grease details...gretails? nevermind, that sounds terrible).
without further ado, here is today's entry!
The Case of the Disappearing Cardigan
At the beginning of Sandy and Danny's date to the Frosty Palace diner, Sandy is wearing a white cardigan over a yellow dress.
After Danny drags her through the diner, she takes off her cardigan and puts it over her the back of her seat.
It remains there for a couple minutes, through several cuts. When Sandy and Danny go to leave, the cardigan is still there. However, when the shot pulls over towards Danny, cutting off the view of Sandy's chair.
When the camera gets back down to Sandy, the cardigan is not visible on the back of her chair and Sandy exits the scene without it!
ADDITIONALLY!! This image exists:
It's from the start of the scene, just after Sandy and Danny sit down (as the menus are up to hide them, and the second table hasn't been pulled over yet. BUT there is no cardigan to be seen! This must be from another take - one without the cardigan at all, or one where is slipped away much sooner? Who knows? Not me.
So, there we have it. A disappearing cardigan - clearly slid down the back of the chair as she moved, and was forgotten about! I don't think that Sandy, the character, would forget her cardigan so it's just a cute detail of production that they went with this take over another! It makes me feel sappy about how many people work on movies. And I wonder if anyone on production noticed or knew - was it a 'she'll be right, let's move on' decision or a mistake that made it into the final product? How many other people notice this when they watch the movie? It's a pretty fast-paced scene, so it isn't super obvious.
Jackets and cardigans do play a pretty big role in the fashion of the movie. Can even see an example here - Rizzo is wearing Kenicke's t-birds jacket, as they're together. And, of course, iconically throws it in his face at the end of the scene! Sandy's white cardigan is representative of her outsider status from the pink ladies, her preppy style/presentation, and Danny's inability to 'claim' her and his feelings for her by giving over his own precious status symbol t-bird jacket. Rewatching this scene for this post also really highlighted some really great acting from Newton-John in this scene - she reaches over to hold Danny's hand multiple times, tries to make eye contact and get some reassurance but Danny is unable to do that, so clearly bothered by the presence of the others and the need to mask his emotions for the sake of persona.
(sorry for the quality of the images - it really bugs me that I can't make better ones using my apple tv copy of the film! Gifs probably would also have been helpful here but I do not know how to make them. and I fear that if I learn I would probably make a gif of every single second of the movie lol)
