Backpacking Sunol Regional Wilderness Preserve
This is one of the best beginner backpacking routes in the bay area, allowing for easy 1 night out and back trips
Mission Peak up Hidden Valley trail then down Horse Heaven and Peak Meadow trails
Recommended: Up and down via Hidden Valley trail
In the winter there are many mornings with early morning fog within the bay area. This fog provides nice shade to protect against the sun and overheating when doing steep hikes such as this one. It also provides beautiful views over a sea of fog if you make it to the top of a hike with views of the bay such as this one, but you have to be quick because it can evaporate by midday
Santa Cruz Island Traverse on Channel Islands National Park, California
After a choppy early morning ferry, we were glad to get started on solid ground. We started out from Prisoners Harbor, with the weight of over a day's supply of water each, and we climbed quickly up the coastal bluffs (photo #1-3) to Del Norte campground for our first night in the backcountry. We brought about 6 liters of water each because there wouldn't be a reliable source of water until our second night's campground. We enjoyed the ocean views from our shaded sites at Del Norte (#4) while we drank our wine to reduce our pack weights for the next day's long trek.
Our second day's trek treated us to views of coastal bluffs (#5-6) with perfect overcast to offset warm temperatures. There were many forks to out-and-back viewpoints along the way (#7) and some light bushwhacking. The path up the peak (#8-11) had some scrambling. The entire other side of the island was visible from the peak (#12). More island foxes (#13) were visible around Scorpion campground, our second night's resting place.
After a crazy storm our last night, we enjoyed drinks on the ferry back to Ventura while watching seals, dolphins, birds, and a humpback whale feast (#14).
