May 8 - The birthday of Jack Ryder (The Creeper.) Art by Steve Ditko.
365 DC Comics Heroes & Villains Paper Cut-Outs
The Creeper
Gotham-based journalist Jack Ryder had been the host of a confrontational left-wing talk show, called ‘You Are Wrong!’ One of his stories led him to investigate a scientist who had developed an experimental tissue-regenerative serum. Ryder discovered that a gang of violent criminals were planning to steal this serum so to sell it on the black market.
The journalist attempted to intervene which resulted in his being mortally wounded. Desperate to save his life Ryder agreed to allow the scientist to inject him with the experimental serum. It succeeded in mending Ryder’s wounds and additionally bestowed him superhuman strength, reflexes and agility. It also drove him quite mad.
Overwhelmed with a manic energy, Ryder’s skin changed a yellowish hue and his hair a bright shade of green. Giddy with his newfound powers, he called himself ‘The Creeper’ and used his newfound abilities to take down the criminals. He later reverted to his original form and found that he was able to summon the change when the need were to arise.
Although reluctant to give in to his madcap side, Ryder has transformed into The Creeper on many occasions to fight crime. He has additionally acted as an adjunct member of the Justice League, The Outsiders and the Shadow Fighters.
Actors Jeff Bennett, Brian Bloom and Corey Burton have voiced the Creeper in DC animated projects. The histrionic hero first appeared in the pages of Showcase #73 (1968).
Is The Creeper a vigilante, or a stripper? You tell me.

Superman: Chains of Love Special (2026)
Superman: Chains of Love Special is so good
I feel like this comic is so slept on, why is no one talking about? I'll keep this quick, but overall I think it's great. Even though they portray Jack Ryder as a fox news/info wars type broadcaster (😔😔) I think the creeper having livestreams is a hilarious concept. I also love the chemistry (or you could say electricity ;)) between Livewire and Creeper, they are both misfits, but give each other a place to be in society. I don't have much else to say, but I love the concepts introduced in this comic and I think Creeper x Livewire is so cute!!
Also can we talk about Creeper's fluff fanfic he wrote about the two of them?? Like, that's actually so cute 😭. 100% would read.

Witness the rise of the Wiretap and some shocking surprises in the Superman: Chains of Love Special!

CreepCord, anyone? Niche DC characters?
I read Beware The Creeper (1968) earlier, and now I love these guys. I didn’t even know The Creeper existed until yesterday, and I only knew Jack Ryder from the Arkham games, so I was very surprised to find out this is what he’s like in the comics. Now I’m sad we didn’t get The Creeper in the Arkhamverse 😔
I loved Jack and Rip in that comic tho! They had a great dynamic (even if it was only for 3 issues). I also loved the way Jack transformed into The Creeper, and how he kept acting like some supernatural, crazy being to scare the criminals. I think it’s great that he was still just a semi-regular guy at the end of the day because I find that more interesting than ‘crazy alter-ego that’s crazy just because’.
The doodles on the right were just for fun lol. The top one was based on Jack in Issue 3/4 of Beware The Creeper when he was trying to get on the police’s good side. And then the bottom ones are based on Issue 6.
Idk if I’ll draw these guys again, but I will most likely think about them. I’ll also probably read the other Creeper comics now that I know they exist.
