Three legends!
Living the 70s dream by Fray Bentos on Flickr.
Plenty of vintage transport action in New Canal, Salisbury, on Friday 23rd January 1976. Two Bristol FS Lodekkas in shot, the closer of the pair a Bristol-engined example. A Bristol VRT loads up outside Alexandre, where the post-Christmas "Wildfire Sale" is in full swing. Fashion-conscious newleyweds ...not yet "trying for a baby" and apprehensive about the fifteen-year, £10,000 mortgage on the house off Devizes Road... draw up at the kerb (or at least close to it) in their first car, a five year-old Mini. She reaches forward for her bag ..."See you in Boots when you've parked the car. Are you all right for ten pees for the meter? Love you. Mmwuh!". The VRT is bound for Bemerton Heath and I think of William Dyce's wonderful painting, "George Herbert at Bemerton".
Bill Withers - Grandma's Hands
An incredibly personal song, played live here for your enjoyment
A little gem from a young Humblebums era Gerry Rafferty - 'Keep It To Yourself'
Here is Liberace playing 12th Street Rag back in the 50's - heck this guy can play!
Recorded live for TV broadcast throughout Britain, these historic performances have been unseen for nearly 40 years. Filmed with superb camera work and pristine sound, 14 complete performances and 4 bonus performances are included by Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, Lonnie Johnson, Big Joe Williams, Lightnin' Hopkins, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Howlin' Wolf, Big Joe Turner, Junior Wells, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
Between 1963 and 1966 huge British tours were undertaken by the likes of Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins, Howlin' Wolf, and Junior Wells. This release in the American Folk-Blues Festivals gathers footage from these tours, providing an amazing document of a historic time.
West Yorkshire PTE 2311 (LAK311G), Market Street, Bradford. September 1979.
I wonder what the driver was thinking, having his photo taken. The Odeon Cinema in the background was the largest in the UK outside London. Today it lies sadly derelict whilst the area in the foreground has been completely redeveloped.
The cruiser 'Yoshino' was built at the Elswick shipyard in 1892. Here a representative of the Japanese navy inspects the ship during construction
Robert Wyatt - Blues in Bob Minor
One from the genius that is Robert Wyatt. As with all of Mr Wyatt's works,it takes a little input to get a great deal of output from the piece. Oh, and having the lyrics in front of you help too....
Roger's in the archive looking up casement
Martha's in the government digging up the basement
Rebel into representative for the voter
Shadow backbencher couldn't get a word in
Turned up anyway ... issues burning
All consuming ... drinks in the cabinet
Spent a lot of time just examining the building
drinks on the house? you must be joking
Corridors of power cuts toy telephone bills
Long time no see underneath the floorboard
Looking for the roots of the family treetops
Toe's in the water but you've only got ten.
Fingers in the eel pie poke around tip top
Tunnelling a wormhole Eartha Kitty catfish
Meadow brown peacock ... pupa-larva-caterpillar
Hibernate in winter of our discotheque no
End in sight .. more like a spiral ... coil
Or curler ... just unwinding ... very slowly
Revealing endless disappearing pipelines
Genuflecting ... bowing deeply ... it
Don't take a weathergirl to see where
The wind is blowing ... what the wind is bending
Isobars are opening ... sex to midnight
Cabinet shuffling homeward bound ... taking
A detour ... rendezvous do ... chapel in the valley
Of the blown up doll ... that's not Martha
Shunting in a siding ... she got homework
Up to here
Roger's in the footnotes up to his elbones
Verse and chapter disinterred
Borrowing a bookcase don't come easy
The weight of the evidence in parenthesis
Beggars tightly furled belief
Heads on beaterblocker repetition on the line
Shell shock supertroopers ... whirl banking oil palm
Intercontinental drift ... over the rainbow
Over the sea to ska rocker skintone
hirsuit missed a link and that's not all
That he got missing inna thousand years of
Orthotoxic waste disposal ... god proposal
Jealous sky ... whatever is a girl to do
To break the service in its tried and tested
And found wanting state of oh! boy network
Stewardship?
Little Johnny Aardvark never hurt
Nobody ... Martha friend and Roger too
Tone down a little ... sotto voce ... some tall order
Given that four minutes is eternity time
In the hushed up world of waspish V-signs
A-sides sui-C-side salads of the bad young B-sides
What's the point of digging deeper just to lay
The ghost of Sala Hal-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub?
"Don't give up" the dead man cried
"There's more of us than there of you
Soon you'll all be on our side ... forever more or
Lester Young died ... 'Fat Girl' also ... blowing all the blues
Away side ... dust ain't just dust ... trust us like we
Live forever ... broken loose from greystone tether
Keep on tiptoe through the archive ... we are dead
But you are alive ... Martha yes and Roger too
Until you let the gringos grind you down"
I adore these photos. They show the town of Leigh, Lancashire in the 1950's and were rescued from a house clearance.
The world has a pleasing, weathered quality, homely even. The streets are spacious and remarkably traffic free; the age of mass car ownership isn't upon us yet.
The Real Thing - You To Me Are Everything (1976)
Utter cheese. Utter magnificence. It just takes my mind to a contemporary nightclub. The disco ball, the flock wallpaper, possibly a light blue suit (very wide lapels, and flares, naturally), glass of Watneys, Pernod and Black for the other half.... rose tinted spectacles maybe, but we've all got to dream.
Plenty of people took the bus to see the Pope's visit in May 1982. In a scene completely unthinkable today, the M66 has ben turned into a bus parking strip.
The best version of this seminal Fleetwood Mac (mk1) song. Recorded live at The Boston Tea Party in Jan 1970. Turn it up FULL and soak it up - go on, I dare you!
p.s. - apologies for Jeremy Spencer's meaningless boffle at the end.
Woke up this morning with this in my head. Whatever happened to strings in popular music? The Mamas & The Papas' "I Saw Her Again"...
A Bedford Library by geoff7918 on Flickr.
In the service of Cambridgeshire Libraries was this Bedford. It was registered 18/02/1977 and it's last liability was 01/09/1992 when it was listed as being blue. KWM 274R was a petrol rather than diesel engine. Photo October 1980
Badfinger - Midnight Sun from 1969's "Magic Christian Music" soundtrack. The intro is pure Britpop.
A storming piece played magnificently. Recorded live at "The Club", Chicago in March 1966.
