Hello darkness, here again, last I saw you I was tangled in my head Hello sadness, are you here to stay? Right when things were finally going my way
The first time Rebecca Hartley has experienced death, she was eleven years old and not once, she has seen her father cried, but on that day, at her grandfather funeral service, he was crying like a lost child in the middle of a crowd of people. Her father, the man with extraordinary super powers that she could only see him as a superhero, was broken and small and she could only wrap her arms around him like she did as a baby, saying âitâs okay dad, weâll meet him again, I promiseâ. She never got the chance to cry because of it, she wanted to be her fatherâs biggest support because she could only imagine the pain of losing a parent. She did not cried.Â
Second time around, it was Charles, or just uncle Charlie as Rebecca refers him as, it was not as easiest as the first time to not cry, so she did. After all, it was a brutal loss, he wasnât an elderly man as grandpa, he was heath, young and with the rest of his life ahead of him. However, something as small as a bullet had come and take his life away, so she had to cry. Crying at his funeral, crying when she was alone and far away from home in the boarding school room because whatever God may exist, it has failed her. It was not fair, it was a mischief of destiny, a sad little joke to may teach someone a lesson, but for what? Her dear uncle, her fatherâs brother, was gone, dead, the shine of life behind his eyes has faded and once again, her father could barely stand. The madness that the situation caused, the killer never got caught, the people involved were still running free and her family was left with wounds that did not heal. Rebecca could still recall the many times she would fear to step out the school campus, afraid something may happen, afraid to have to keep reliving the moment in her head, time and time again. The therapy, the panic attacks and the anxiety in her chest.Â
However, later on in life she is able to see that death is a part of life and she faces death every day, playing God and trying to beat the son a bitch in the face, giving the families a peace of mind when she is able to save someone from dying and the loved ones from crying. It was her job, her call on this Earth or whatever you may call and it was what she used to tell her daughters, that mommy saves lives. But now, how is she going to tell them she failed? She wasnât there to try and save the most important person in the world for the three of them? How to explain when Sarah kept asks why she could not fix dad like she does with everyone or maybe, the last memory they would have is their parents fighting, fighting over why did he has to leave in the middle of the New Yearâs Eve party, why caring so much about a stupid case? Why the both of them were lying about Willa? Rebecca did not had the time to remind him of how much she loves, how much she will always love him.Â
It was the third, most several and brutal loss of her life, the piece of her heart that she valued the most was now empty, only remaining beating because of the two little girls that are asleep in bed besides her. This was not fair, these girls, they need their father. She was still in a state of shook, torn, unable to cry or believe that this was happening. In her mind she just wanted to wake up for this terrible nightmare. Reid could not be dead, he could just not leave her alone now, not now because it was too soon, too goddamn soon and it wasnât fair. They were supposed to grow old together, see the world with their children, have two more, a boy that they would name Noah because it has been Rebeccaâs favorite. The ten year celebration of their marriage in Italy or in an Island, they hadnât decide yet ---- there was just too many, too many things left undone. It was not fair and she feels the water starting to pour out her eyes, but the kids could not wake up to her sobbing. She gets up and makes the way down stairs, at the house they bought together, fought because of the damn colors and if they should spend millions on an estate like that, till they finally realized it was the perfect home to raise a family. The crying increases. The silence that fills the empty spaces is too loud, screams the memories of their family and she feels the air leaving her lungs, but is unable to get back inside and she cannot breath, she gasps for air but is like it is not there and she cannot stop herself from crying. Stumbling to get outside, to feel the cold breeze hit her face, it is when she opens the door that a pair of arms is there to catch. Please, be him, please be the moment this nightmare is over, please. It was the only thing in her mind, that those arms holding her belonged to Reid, to her beloved husband, the one able to make herself she loved and in peace, safe. Blue eyes able to take her breath away and as she falls deeper in love with him, smiling at her when she cannot stop rambling about whatever is at her mind, the same smile and eyes that were passed on to her daughters --- but she knew they werenât. The smell was not his, the pressure against her body did not have the same hold as his, it was someone else. A man, strong and with superpowers, someone that has lost many in his life, someone that could hold her too close and too tight, letting her crying and scream in his chest for as long as she need. âDad, I --- I canât --- I canât do this, I need Reid I --- donât I donât want be here.â Between the sobs is the only words that left her mouth.Â
