Struck By a Star

Passionate love feels like one has been struck by a star.
Though we say we believe in love, do we really? Then why do we become such deers in headlights when we fall in love? We are so completely lost if we are not moving forward. And even when we do, it feels as if we are disappearing deeper into the Fog. The loving feeling - a simultaneous push and pull - our "reassurance" to continue and the reason that we must. If we really believe in love, why do we call lovers fools? They could only be fools if love doesn't exist. Do we really believe in love?
What do you believe about love?
I say:
When we love is when we are truly human. The second we are born, we start "feeling", but only through senses partially developed. Then, with the maturity of thought, we start to feel our thoughts. We gradually feel the fluctuating control of those thoughts; and, in that, the connection of our thoughts and senses to emotional feelings of jealousy, envy, anger, joy, ecstasy, even immortality. Feelings tumble with thoughts; thoughts and feelings, throughout time, become each other's rulers. Feeling, the impetus for thought, and vice versa. Love happens when thoughts and feelings roll into one.
Love is the great feeling that encompasses all feelings. So love is jealousy, love is compassion, love is hate, love is selfishness, love is generosity, love is pride, love is humility, love is the crystal that inflects the light of humanity onto the wall, life manifested.
Let's be struck by stars, let's be in love, let's love at deeper and unimaginable depth; because love is the climax of being human. Let what you believe about love be that which exemplifies the climax of humanity. Turn the crystal prism of life to reflect the most bewildering apparitions and intoxicating colors on the wall, especially layered with that of every other.
Strike me today with a star, and as a star today I strike you ;)

Few Words On Love
I am by no means an expert on love, but I love much the people that have come into my life even if they have left for whatever reasons, and I also love much the people that stay and surround me. You probably know that it is easier to advise about love when you are thinking objectively; so I write these words for myself as if I was advising my closest and dearest.
A few words on love and love's failures:
"Internationality" and mix of cultures complicates things?
For those of us who are international, things can quickly get more complex (as if things weren't complicated enough already) because you may be drawn from a wider mix of cultures and experiences that you can hardly define yourself. This sometimes makes it harder for others to know how to reach you or for you to reach another. But you also just may be more open to finding people in places they did not expect to be found.
It is not your fault.
For some of us, there is a tendency to wonder what is wrong with me that I have not yet found love? What have I done wrong? How am I suppose to be different? Why has love not found me? am I forgotten? Remember, it is not your fault. There are two in a relationship and you are just as much of the problem and the solution as the other. It may be cliche to say that there is no one person to blame, but you know the smallest differences can be irreconcilable, while what you imagined to be the largest gaps, may end up feeling only like speed bumps along your way.
Be vulnerable.
We often forget that the "softest" things are the strongest: one can never break water. (I won't be a smart ass and talk physics ;P). I know our feelings are not water and we can get very hurt and very broken. But the inability or unwillingness to be vulnerable won't save us. Brene Brown teaches us a lot in her TEDTalk about her international study on human vulnerability. Knowing, believing, and living a life where we accept pain make us unbreakable. I think modern society forgets that vulnerability is a freedom, a freedom that is possessed by the truly strong. It is natural for water to be parted, reformed, contained, released.. and so water is never broken.
You cannot control how another loves you.
Just as it says. There are 3 parts to life: the part over which you have complete control, the part you have some control, and the part you have no control. We like thinking that we can somewhat control how others love us because it alleviates our fear of trusting them. But in fact, if tomorrow they decide they don't love you, that is that. Yes, match, chemistry, memories of you, go into that choice, but it is what it is. They will love you the way they love you. And you will love them as you will. Accept how you love them just as how you accept how they love or don't love you. So what is in your control? You can decide how you want to be loved, and tend the boundaries and freedoms of your life. Let's be....free!
Counterintuitive lessons on being happy
Similar to Brene Brown's experience, George Vaillant learned a number of counterintuitive lessons about how to be happy, studying the lives of 268 Harvard men over 72 years of their life: regular exercise during college was a better predicter for mental health later in life, social aptitutude was more indicative of successful aging than intellectual brilliance or parental social class...you can read the rest for yourself, but most importantly, the author of the Atlantic article well summarized, "the key to the good life—not rules to follow, nor problems to avoid, but an engaged humility, an earnest acceptance of life’s pains and promises."
Refocus on loving people that love you.
This post is not meant to be cheesy, but if it is, so be it. I by no means think you should stick to people you feel comfortable with. Uncomfortableness and learning how differently life is seen by others helps us grow and become free. Meet new people! Love them! But also remember the people who love you. In times when you cannot think of anything good about yourself the least you should know is that people you think are wonderful see something in you; and if they are wonderful as you believe, they must be right. Trust them in your moments of doubt and be open to their love for you. You will find love if you are open to the love that is already there. Another interesting find by George Vaillant's study that may explain why we fail to appreciate that love sometimes - positive emotions make us more vulnerable than negative ones.
Embrace Risk = Happier Life.
We know that stripping away fear and anxiety will let us be happier in our lives, but why? When love, a relationship, a job, some attempt fails, 2 main reasons make it hurt: (1) You want it and you didn't get it, and (2) you don't believe things can get better from here. Our distaste for risk makes us unhappy. But in fact, especially in relationships, things are more likely to be better! I'm not kidding! It didn't work out because something wasn't working. Provided your former lover didn't kill you and you haven't yet gone insane, you have your health, you have your mind, you learned more, and have more, to build a better relationship in the future. See the open opportunity for what it is, an opportunity for something better!
One leaves our lives to make room. Room for another or for him/her to return anew. We might not have had a choice in how someone has left our life, but we can decide who and how the next enters.

Mud Paths Through the Emerald City
So I don't know if you've heard of the mud paths through the Emerald City? Unlike most other paths to beauty, the mud paths to my Emerald City is neither exclusive nor dangerous.
This last summer, my visit to Taiwan reminded me why it was called the Island of Formosa by its former conquerors, including the Spanish/Portuguese (Iberia) and Dutch.
Me, my aunt and cousin
Taiwan, like its people, open-heartedly displays everything of itself. As Taiwan has modernized and its business sectors diversified, its people have grown and change with the times no doubt. But the essence of the Taiwanese remains: a little naive yet conniving, a little loud from being hearty, emotional yet business savvy, seemingly plain but creative in unexpected ways.

These are my thoughts as I bike on the mud paths outlining the emerald fields of Taiwan - luscious green that the wind moves, but remains unwavering. Rice must first be sprouted. Then the roots of the seedlings are planted in a pool of mud covered with water. As the rice grows, the water is absorbed and fades, exposing a crackled gray. Different plants requires its kind of foundations. Sometimes I think we forget that humans are the same. A certain type of personality, a particular business, a relationship or some other for unique formulas pray.
What can one find in scenery that one has passed so many times in childhood? Perhaps a feeling of solace and peace, perhaps not. I think it is more than the familiar that comforts us. And more than beauty that triggers our calm. Rather, it is, that we remember (or can imagine) a moment where we felt happy; so we again, believe in the possibility of relief, the existence of happiness, and the richness of emotions.
Funny, the best way to happiness seems to be the belief it will again come to pass; because happiness is [already] and has always been here, like Emerald Cities along our childhood mud paths.

Taiwan: Get it while it's hot! Breakfast in Taiwan
Golden crispyness wrapped in a thin egg omelet 蛋餅: the Taiwanese breakfast is a steamy and savory affair. Even at breakfast, Taiwanese tastebuds are ready for a sweet or savory experience 鹹鹹甜甜真好吃. An array of textures surprise your tongue from the first bite of the day.
Above, a more eggy version of the crepe - more bubbly and golden as a result - than the smooth Western variety, wraps a crunchy, fried dough 油條 to make a satisfying carb choice.
Or pick these steamed soup dumplings 小湯包. Minimum carbs and a hot mouthful as your teeth tears the delicate yet slightly chewy skin into a meat filling mixed with chives, cabbage, or mushrooms. Vegetarian options are also often available in Taiwan.
In spite of Taiwan's international reputation for digital hardware manufacturing, the people grew up in a heavily agricultural community. Even now, rice fields 稻田 are a beautiful and integral part of Taiwan's landscape. The saying that the early birds get the bug has not ever quite died either :) The traditional breakfast shops still live by the venerated principles of waking up early, making things by hand, smiling through sweat and tears....so cooks are often pounding dough, toasting bun at 5 or 6 in the morning. However, as younger generations sleep later and later, skipping breakfast altogether, or choosing the Western and more chic form of breakfast - coffee and sweet pastries, I only hope these breakfast shops survive.
Cost of traditional food has been influenced by inflation but remain low compared to the American standard of living. A cage of steamed dumpling 一籠小湯包 is around $2.50 AND tax already included. The egg crepe with fried donut 蛋餅油條 and other dishes each cost only $1-2. The low cost of the food but the demanding labor required also push families to look to other business channels instead.
The breakfast shop pictures above showcase what is considered more traditional Taiwanese breakfast, which often also offer sticky rice rolls 飯糰 filled with pickled radish, dried seaweed, and dried shredded pork shreds (肉鬆 much softer but arguably more flavorful than the Western jerky), or lightly pan fried airy flatbreads tucked with beef 燒餅夾牛肉, or crispy bread stuffed with meat 牛/豬肉煎餅 .
Much more popular now are pop-up breakfast spots like below. These pop-ups serve sandwiches with soft, white Asian bread 白吐司 (Asian toast has a soft chew that is more spongy, light, and moist than its Western relatives). In between a slightly sweet mayonnaise and fresh cucumber strips, you can pick from sausage patties, fried eggs, ham, sweet corn...
[I apologize for the poorer pictures before hand... when I get new ones I will update them. The breakfast shops are wary of journalists gossiping about the way breakfast shops are run lately so the owner was suspicious of me taking pictures.]
Two sandwiches with egg and sausage patties. Most people apparently don't like the sides of the bread so most pop-ups cut that away. Of course, these spots serves your rice milk 米漿, soy milk 豆漿, milk teas 奶茶 (cold or hot on demand). Other choices include radish "cakes" 蘿蔔糕, like you find at dim sum in Cantonese restaurants. But the star of pop-up breakfast shops is, most definitely, dan bing 蛋餅, which translate into something like an egg roll.
How do I know this? Thank you facebook feed for telling me what all my friends from Taiwan (Caucasian or Asian) all eat first after going home!
What is spectacular about the dan bing? How about a barely crisp, simultaneously chewy, thin skin made of dough pan fried golden with a bubbling egg cracked on top. While you wait with business people, students, moms, kids..you watch the eggs golden on the huge griddle alongside ham, sausage patties, sweet corn, green onions - the perfume of each ingredient distinct yet enmeshed, as if they knew they will end up rolled together.
Some swift movements later dan bings are rolled. The teppanyaki turner parse the dan bings into manageable bites (like pictured above) and your face turns hopeful that the person at the counter looks at you to hand you your order. A drizzle of hoisin and hot sauce later, the dan bing is...all yours.
Seattle: Other Coast Cafe
Seattle and San Francisco is no doubt on the Best Coast and this sandwich spot holds its own wherever it imagines the "other coast" to be. Albeit, not spacious, and surrounded by tough competition of other Ballard restaurants and the Farmers Market on Sundays, people know this is the place to eat.
Rajun Cajun Sandwich is their most popular item on the menu. The official description says "Cajun Turkey, Pepper Jack Cheese, Tomato, Onion, SPICY Salsa Mayo." Ta DA!!!!!
Rustic bread toasted crisp yet smothered juicy with cajun sauce, melted cheese, and meats from Boar's Head....mmmmm.
No matter your pick, they don't skimp on the sauce, meats or cheese, and encase all the good stuff in quality bread. That's the making of a memorable sandwich. The kitchen moves fast and as a Seattle joint, the Other Coast Cafe is conscious of its vegetable-inclined crowd. It offers a cold "veggin'" option, cold vegetarian option, and also, hot, roasted veggie sandwiches. Come here for a bite, you won't be disappointed.

Best Sunday Adventures: Ballard Farmer's Market in Seattle
The Ballard Farmer's Market is definitely one of THE BEST places to hang out in Seattle. The market is open on Sundays, year-round, from 10AM to 3PM. On a nice sunny day, you will find not only amazing goodies to take home, but also families with their cute kiddos and big, furry dogs come out for a stroll as well.

Musicians gift the market with their own styles of music at different points of the market. Every turn brings you something colorful and wonderfull. Fresh bouquets, forested mushrooms, huge samples from the smoked salmon tent (I love that place!)...cheeses, smoked meats, stone oven pizza right out in the streets, baked goods (vegan and non-vegan), quesadillas drippy with cheese right off the...you get the idea.

And who can say no to stopping by the apple cider and fruit wine table, especially when they have samples...all..year..around! The streets next to the market are lined with clothing and gift boutiques and there is no lack of restaurants nearby when you've done your shopping. The market makes a wonderful, lights walk after your brunch date as well - good reason for your girl dates to pull out that dress or for you both to sip on some solid Seattle coffee, looking cool in your Sunday recovery shades.

Give cardamom or chocolate chardonnay lavender a try. Be adventurous! Though the Ballard Farmer's Market isn't a food truck spot as in the Fremont Farmer's Market, it never leaves you wanting. The Other Coast Cafe, Bastille, and Walrus and Carpenter will take care of you if you want a satisfying bite, a fancy brunch, or a nice sit down place for a date or the family.
