Okay the “how’d y’all even learn without the internet” tag has me laughing so I have to answer.

Yes, there was knowledge before the internet. It was a little harder to track down at times but most of the best tumblr information you find on witchcraft is still being pulled from sources that existed before the internet. But information tended to be more local before the internet because there were fewer books and you often studied or learned from local witches.

So, for a couple of the questions - I came to witchcraft through my mother. I also studied locally with Ann Moura because she lives in the general area. I learned before the internet but the internet vastly expanded my ability to find more information. Every witch I know has probably secretly been casting spells since they watched their first Disney movie over time we just make them more effective. I post a lot of aesthetic stuff because tumblr is a wonderful place for pretty pictures but a really sloppy place to share deeper knowledge. There’s nothing about being a witch that says you have to stop liking aesthetics.

Also, I don’t even post everything I do in my craft (if ever) because what I do in my own time I like to keep a bit more personal. I am inna coven with a witch who has been practicing for 6+ years (@witchwithacoffeepot ). We learn from each other and from sources online. We are more on the broke side so we can’t afford books and a ton of supplies, not that I need to explain that to someone who doubts my knowledge or ability. Even if someone does witchcraft for the aesthetic (whether I agree or not) is none of my business unless they are spreading harmful and blatantly incorrect information.

I have been drawn to the craft since I was a child and never knew until I was an early teen it was real. The very attitude of “you must be guided and it is super strict and serious and you gotta act this way and do x,y,z” is why I was told by an elder witch to not even bother. I was discouraged from taking the path I was most drawn to and it took 4-ish years until I’d find myself choosing my craft over that attitude.

I just like my blog to look nice with a theme while also sharing information. Last time I checked, that wasn’t a crime. People tend to not care if your blog isn’t somewhat “aesthetic”.

The afternoon began with wild collecting for my besom.

After soaking the bristles to make it easier to tie them in a bundle, it was time to assemble them.

Plastic ties made the job relatively easy. I then wound wire in between the gaps beside the ties, tucking the ends of the wire into the bundle. Then I cut the ties carefully away so as not to cut the bristles. Finally, I wet some twine and tied that around the bundle, evenly spaced. I found a branch already cut and whittled at the ends in the woods by the river, it was as if someone had played around and fashioned a sort of spear with it and then just left it there! It made for the perfect handle for my besom. Jammed that handle in the middle of the bundle hard, and that sucker isn’t going anywhere!

I put blue ribbon over the wire to make it look pretty (I think my Goddess likes blue, as it comes up a lot in different things lately) also, dammit, if I am going to own a besom, it is going to look pretty because I deserve it! Cost of my besom? $4.00 for plastic ties and ribbon from the dollar store, that’s it! And of course, the time that it took to gather the bundle from the wild, and search for a handle, all in all it took roughly 2 hours. Not too shabby, if I say so myself.

Now I just have to cleanse the besom (with some sandalwood incense) and ask the God and Goddess to bless it.

I feel it’s relevant for Wiccans and Witches to know you CAN make your own broom at home with just a few things collected from nature. No, you don’t have to be very good at putting craft projects together, and this honestly was very easy to assemble.

It really bothers me when I hear of others involved in the craft who have literally spent a couple hundred bucks easy on a besom/broom they bought online. Unless you WANT to spend that money because it saves time, etc., fine. But otherwise, I feel you are being taken advantage of because no one has told you the steps to make your own.

You will need:

Twigs, straw, whatever for the bristles

Long plastic ties

A small hand saw, or as in my case I used a bread knife to cut the grassy-like straw

Craft wire

Scissors or garden clippers to cut straw/twigs

Branch for the handle

Blade to whittle point in the branch

Twine

Ribbon

Wanted to share a concept I figured out a bit ago: Crisis spells. Basically, really simple spells you can do at a moment's notice with no prep. Repetitive chants work well for these because they raise energy easily with no props. Here's one I wrote myself to start things off (TW: self harm mention): if you're having uncontrollable urges to hurt yourself, chant "star of the morning stay my blade, show me how to heal without pain" repeatedly until you regain control over your thoughts. Blessed be!

If anyone struggles with self harm, perhaps this is something that would help you!

You should make a post about it so you can go more in-depth than an ask allows.

A question about holy water please

I have a friend who asked me what it could mean when holy water turns black, because she knows I research the supernatural but I don't know much about Catholic tradition.

I told her first I would rule out any possibility of it being mold or someone adding something to her holy water to pull a prank on her. I also suggested getting another bottle, and if nothing happens to this bottle then its reasonable to assume that it was just mold growing in her older bottle.

So anyone who knows about Catholic tradition and angels and demons, please could you give me a bit of information about any supernatural reason for holy water turning black? What would be the church's opinion on something like this?

a jack-o-lantern ritual (and a magick pumpkin seed recipe)

samhain is approaching; we celebrate the end of the harvest and the beginning of the cold, dark days of the year. it serves as a spiritual new year for many pagans, and a time to honor and commune with the spirit world. jack-o-lanterns are home protectors against spiritual evil and mischief; here is a little ritual you can do as you carve your pumpkin to add a little extra magick to the tradition, and a recipe for blessed pumpkin seeds to bring you happiness and protection.

for the jack-o-lantern, you will need:

☾ a pumpkin (wish-granting, protection, prosperity)

☾ a tool for carving and scooping out the seeds

☾ black pepper (protection from evil)

☾ dried catnip (attracting good spirits, luck)

☾ a little tealight candle (white or black)

- before you begin carving, hold the carving knife in your hands and hone your personal magick into it. think thoughts of blessings, protection, and rebirth. when you feel it is adequately charged, carve open a lid and scoop the seeds out for later use.

- carve a face of your liking into the pumpkin.

- sprinkle black pepper into the pumpkin and whisper, “may you protect me from spirits evil and angry.”

- sprinkle catnip into the pumpkin and whisper, “may you bring me spirits sweet and kind.”

- place the candle in the pumpkin and set it outside your home as a charm of protection and good energy.

for the magick pumpkin seeds, you will need:

☾ cleaned pumpkin seeds (prosperity, love)

☾ olive oil (honoring ancestors, peace)

☾ a sprinkle of salt (cleansing, purification)

☾ a pinch of garlic powder (protection from evil, healing)

☾ a bowl, aluminum foil and a baking sheet

- lay a strip of aluminum foil over the baking sheet. preheat oven to 300° F.

- in a bowl, toss the seeds with olive oil, salt, and garlic powder to your taste.

- bake the seeds for 45 minutes, or until golden brown, stirring occasionally.

The Witch Urbane

We talk much of nature, and the relationship of the witch to the wood and the shore, the grove and the desert. Yet as history advances many of us are emigrated to or raised in large cities. What of the witch who is surrounded by concrete and steel, glass and auto fumes? Who find it difficult to lay out a patch worth of soil in which to know the earth?

Yet the urban landscape has alway held witches, even in the dark ages the witch lived in ghetto and brothel, among apartments visited for her cartographic divinatory skills, in the open market where she might do a bit of trade on the side of her veg and fruit stand.

Landscape magic, that immutable constant between all magical cultures. The relationship to our environment, the countercurrent of activity at the borders of our reality, the wastelands of urban cities, the crossroads where a million souls step foot each day.

The witch wanders the urban landscape much as they do the countryside. With a mind open and listening, absorbing and clocking all of the events around them. Taking it all in despite seemingly lost in thought, unawares.

In the wild the mind of the witch is capable of touching that pure essence of life, that nature spirit that pokes out from within the landscape like a blackbird from the low bushes.

Within the city the quiet of the landscape is constantly devoured by the motions of human activity. The rumble of traffic always to ear, despite the bird’s attempts to be heard. The barbarous language of a thousand street prophets cued into the current that you yourself are riding, a haggard rough sleeper shouting answers to your mental calculations as you drift on the topos of the city.

Debord and the psychogeographers were as close to understanding the current of the landscape as any have since the beginning of cunning. The nature of dérive, to drift, is a form of active spirit possession. We yield to the urges that carry us through the landscape like so many vodoun ‘horses’ dancing at the whim of their lwa. We ride the topos, and it rides us. Snatching at the variables for our charms and spells as we move through the spaces on our patch.

The urban witch is more often a solitary practitioner that the rural witch. The compact nature of cities means that solitude is more sought after for those who are lacking in silences and empty spaces. As with witches of all paths and crafts it is their relationship to the landscape around them locally that defines their practice, both functionally and spiritually.

Where the country witch traffics in owl pellets, old bones, bits of rotting wood - the urban witch traffics in rusted metal, discarded housewares, charity shop hoodoo goods and botanic suppliers. An urban witch may cast seeds of hex herbs in park corners, stake claim to local cemetery haunts, and work a busy intersection as a crossroads as well as a deserted dirt track in some Alabama county.

When the witch is confined to a particularly inhospitable landscape, where natural entities have long been pesticided away, there are still beings with whom one may traffic. Their twisted steel drum voices may echo a bit too loudly, but their pact is as good as the fair folk of the hills if they are treated honorably.

All landscapes are alive, in their own way. The newly pressed concrete disease of glass and steel infecting east London, that has destroyed much of my former haunting grounds, is already taking on the character of a place lived. The refuse piled by the wind in corners, the damp setting into buildings not two winters old, mildew like a scar on the smooth white concrete exteriors. Handrails already sunfaded and rusting after a few seasons of neglect. The sparse transgressions of adaptive “weeds” sprouting from the cracks in sidewalks and building ledges, defiant in their reproductive necessity. Somehow life goes on, even in these sterile mega mall environments.

The urban witch, who haunts bus stop and thrift store. Who lingers at the edge of a box of discarded flowers, savoring the melancholy of human heartbreak like the smell of old cheese. There is plenty of magic for a witch in the city, though it is dangerous in ways that are made of rusted metal, unwashed hands, hard concrete surfaces and regret.

Yet no one should feel that a country witch, who is given easy access to plentiful nature, is in anyway superior to an urban witch, who despite grim surroundings, continues to practice and explore their path and the landscape that surrounds them. Cities are millennia old, and have voices often as old as the most ancient of existing forests. The genii loci of the city just has sharper teeth than their hillfolk kin.

There is after all of these centuries much that remains a mystery within urban space. Where the Romans struck camp to build Londinium some 2000 years ago was likely already a previously inhabited space. The streets in some parts of the city date back to the Roman era. In the Americas cities were built on the native settled areas, markets, pastures, and burial grounds. The spirits of the landscape are as well hidden under the dirt of Detroit and New York, Sao Paulo and Tokyo. The urban landscape teems with a diversity of spirit entities that offer a dangerous array of potential allies and enemies. Chose wisely when you open yourself to your surroundings, once you can see the landscape for what it is, it can see you back.

Every Morning Leave Something Behind

A lesson from my grandmother: every morning, take a moment to check if you are wearing something that you can leave behind.

Are you wearing too many accessories and look jumbled and disorganized? Leave one behind. While you’re at it, leave behind your concern that you won’t look like you’re “enough” for your friends, your position, and your status.

Are you wearing too much perfume (can you smell it yourself? if yes, then yes you are) - dab some off with oil. While you’re at it, leave behind your concern that you won’t be appealing to those around you, that their standard of beauty and worth are a standard you must strive to meet.

Are you carrying the stress at all you didn’t get done the night before and anger at yourself for another night spent resting instead of working? Leave it behind and cherish the healing and recovery.

Are you carrying the burden of wondering about how many calories you had for breakfast? Leave it behind, and know that your body thanks you for the fuel, and that you are valuable, with a tummy full of jiggle and arms full of wobble. Be gentle with yourself - you have enough burdens to carry. Leave behind the ones that don’t serve you.
