Some Years

Some years are meant for parties.

Fizzy drinks and plump balloons and the shiny things that we

put forth against the changing of time.

We flaunt ourselves against it.

We tell off the old year, thumbing our noses at its best efforts to do us in.

We sing with loud voices.

We dance with brashness, boldness.

We laugh, unquestioningly, at the speeding future,

and smirk, flippantly, at the disappearing past.

Other years are meant for retreat.

Closed doors and steady resting or restless arranging,

while listening to the creaking of things changing within our hearts.

We politely decline the invitations to be among the others.

These years we do not sing.

We do not dance.

We do not make jokes about the past or the future.

Those jokes feel dangerous in these years.

These years we are in prayer.

We prostrate ourselves and beg the next year to leave the ones we love in peace.

To not take any more of our heart from the world.

We beg for the clarity we have longed for and found none of.

We beg against the future the things we know of the past.

We decline the invitations.

We cannot risk witnesses to these prayers, these pleas against the truth

lest we are shown so arrogant or so foolish to ask.
