@bigfinished
:(:(:(:(: come back please?
It’s been almost a year but I’m still sad that Big Finish (bigfinish-rp) never reopened. Oh how I wish it would, or some new group would open up with an AU Broadway back story and all; I’m kind of shocked at how few Broadway groups there seem to have been. If I had any sort of clue about the theater world I’d try it myself, but all I can do is hope someone will eventually pick up the torch.
So, yo. We're still around! I'm glad you missed us cause we missed you too! We may do a revamp and re-open in the very near future. I'm working out some kinks as of right now! But when we do reopen, we'll be sure to let you know!
I'm super super sad to hear your news, but I'm a little confused by your message too. You said Big Finish is not closing and may add more characters, but it's permanently on hiatus? I just want to know, should we keep checking back here now and then to see if something might happen?
Hi there anon! And thanks, love! <3.
I recently logged back in just to check out some things, so I apologize for this insanely late response. For the most part, it's on a permanent hiatus. There was just a few things going on behind the scenes and it's a crazy time for a lot of roleplayers right now. (Finals! Yuck! But good luck to everyone who's dealing with them!). That, and after some time of the last announcement, the muse was killed.
But to answer your question, I definitely wouldn't make it a ritual to check this page often, but if you'd like to, that's totally fine! We will definitely announce when the role play is reopened and wait for any of our past players to reclaim their role before opening it [the roles] back up to the public.
So far, no plans on rebooting this sucker up has been made, but summer is crawling upon us, so you never know!
UPDATE:
Hi there!
Firstly we want to thank every potential applicant who stuck with us and sent us well wishes. We appreciate every little thing. However, due to personal issues we wish not to discuss publicly, BIG FINISH RP is going on a permanent hiatus. That does not mean we're closing. We will be keeping this page up and checking on it frequently. We may even do more updates and add more characters over time. For now, however, we're putting a bookmark in this novel and saving it for a later time.
To our members, you should have received a more detailed message in your inbox.
We want to thank everyone who stuck with us. We truly do appreciate it and we do apologize as we know we've kept you waiting. But in the words of the illustrious Marilyn Monroe from Bombshell: "So give me a kiss and cut, print...moving on."
Thank you all.
-- Your Admin Team.
So sorry to keep bugging you, but just wondering if there was any update on when auditions might be open? <3
You could never bug us! <3
I do apologize as I did say they were supposed to be open earlier, but they will definitely be open this week! We had a few minor issues to work out, but once those are settled, we'll be accepting applications! Thanks again for sticking with us!
Hi, will you be accepting auditions soon? I'm trying to decide between Marley and Tina.
Hi there!
Actually yes, we should be accepting auditions either tonight or tomorrow. But an opening will definitely be happening sometime this week. We should be announcing it soon! :)
And either character would be a great addition! We look forward to reading your audition! <3
Congratulations, Alduin. Welcome to Big Finish as Santana Lopez. Please make your account, send it in and go over the new member checklist.
IN CHARACTER INFORMATION
CHARACTER DESIRED: Santana Lopez AGE: Twenty four BIRTHDAY: July 8th, 1989. FAVORED SHIPS: Santana/Chemistry, Santana/Wine, Santana/Awesomeness ANTI-SHIPS: Santana/Forced, Santana/No Chemistry HOMETOWN: Miami, Florida OCCUPATION: Nope.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE. (Please answer the questions below in first person and in character)
IF YOU COULD PLAY ANY ROLE ON BROADWAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
No doubt that it'd be the Leading Player from Pippin. Not only is it a role for all genders, that character is just an all around badass. I mean, let's be real: A character that convinces a keen, wide eyed little blonde boy who's ready for adventure that his life is meaningless and he should try a multitude of detrimental things right before jumping into a pit of fire? Yeah. Total bamf. Where do I sign up?
DID YOU GET THE ROLE YOU WANTED?
You know what? Pause. Allow me to talk about how fucked the team behind Electra Heart is. I mean, first off, they cast me in a minor role. Like, as if. Secondly, they kick me off the team for reading Jones her constitutional rights and backhanding her like her mother should have ages ago? I think I was doing them a favor, but 'parently not. So, whatever. Anyway. I mean, yeah. I auditioned for Gloria and I got Gloria. Which shouldn't surprise anyone.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE ROLE YOU’RE PLAYING NOW?
Gloria Perez is a pretty dope chick. At least I get to sing some Madonna. She's one of my favorite top bitches.
ARE YOU EXCITED TO BE PART OF THIS PROJECT?
Is this a serious question? Of course. I'm making bank by singing, dancing and basically flaunting my perfectly toned behind around a rehearsal space reminding everyone how perfect I really am. Of course I'm excited. Who wouldn't be?
WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE THIS PROJECT?
Next question, please.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN TEN YEARS?
With six grammy's, a pool girl with an ass the size of the moon and me swimming in a bathtub full of money.
AND YOUR LOVE LIFE, WHAT’S THAT LIKE?
I'm sorry. I thought this interview was about theatre. Not fictitious ideals. Go ask the next chick.
WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
Take over the world. Well, the Broadway world. Lopez style.
WRITING SAMPLE:
"You're never going to get a husband if you don't wash out your mouth!" Not this shit again. Santana sighed inwardly, and focused her attention on cleaning the greens they were about to have for dinner. This is why she hated helping her Abuela and mother out in the kitchen. The conversation always led to Santana's love life or lack thereof. She could say it in Spanish, in English, even in Chinese but they still wouldn't get it. She would never get married. "Nope," Santana replied, her gaze shifting over to her mother's small frame, side eyeing the older Lopez woman. It wasn't that she didn't want to get married. No, as a little girl she had dreams of a white wedding like any other girl. She also had dreams of being a bad ass vampire because princesses weren't her thing, but that's an entirely different story. She had come to the conclusion that she would be perpetually single a long time ago. See, Santana was what you would call the second choice. The back up girl. No one stayed past morning night time and no one came before night fall. She had grown accustomed to it, but she'd be lying if she said she wouldn't have liked a little more than that. You know, what normal couples did. Okay, she wanted a relationship. But, she knew she wasn't going to get it. Not anytime soon, so for now, fuck marriage was the attitude. She would continue to keep the front up as long as she could. "Que te pasa?" Her Abuela asked. "It's like you're not even trying. I'd like to see at least one of my great grandchildren." Santana gave another eye roll. She had been doing that a lot tonight. "Nothing," Santana replied. "Not every woman wants a relationship or to be tied down. Having a man -- or woman for that matter doesn't fulfill you." She could see her Abuela cringing the moment 'woman' came out of her mouth. "We never said it did." Her mother stopped chopping up onions and looked at her daughter. "We just want you to be happy. Find someone who compliments you." "I am happy," Santana said. Lie. Big and utter lie. However, she would be happy in a few moments. As soon as she found her favorite bottle of Jose Cuervo. "Excuse me."

Congratulations, Frank. Welcome to Big Finish as Finn Hudson. Please make your account, send it in and go over the new member checklist.
CHARACTER DESIRED: FINN HUDSON AGE: 27 BIRTHDAY: August 4th FAVORED SHIPS: Finn/Chemistry, Finn/Happiness, Finn/Towering over everyone, etc. ANTI-SHIPS: Finn/No Chemistry, Finn/Guys HOMETOWN: Alberta, Canada OCCUPATION: Will Shuester’s personal assistant
CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY:
Finn may have grown up in Canada, but he maintains that he’s spent most of his life in New York City. At a young age, his parents were divorced, putting Finn in a tough place. It wasn’t as if his mother was trying to persuade him to move out and stay with her, but, even as a child, he could tell she wanted him to more than anything in the world. The thing is, children are selfish, and Finn was no exception to that rule. He simply didn’t want to move. Alberta was his home. It didn’t help her case that his mother, Carole, was moving back to where she was raised - not only out of the state, but out of the country. As a boy of ten years old, he wanted to stay where he felt comfortable, where it was familiar.
That didn’t mean, however, that he was not up for visiting her. Every other holiday, he took a trip down to New York to spend time with his mother, time he cherished with every fiber of his being. Though he chose to stay with his father, Finn was always a momma’s boy at heart. Maybe that’s what made him regret not agreeing to stay with her the second he walked the streets of Manhattan. Or maybe he was taken away by the bright lights of the city, by the almost magical essence it gave off, of the hustle and bustle, of the glamour, and the millions of other things that had him rethinking the decision he had made. There was nothing like the feeling he had when he was in the city, and he knew then that New York was where he belonged.
It didn’t take too long for him to pluck up the courage and convince his dad that he could move down to the states and start off high school with his mother. It was a tough blow, but Finn knew that if he spent too much time worrying how it would affect his father, he would never have been able to do it. With a reluctant yes and a grin from the pre-teen, he was off to New York to start off high school. And that was the time Finn started growing and growing and growing, and seemed to never stop. Before he knew it, he was taller than practically everyone else and it gave him even more of a reason to stand out then he had. Being an outgoing and goofy guy, he never had a problem being the center of attention - but he did have a problem pursuing his dreams.
Everyone was so talented and sure of themselves, full of confidence and bursting at the seams with it. This only discouraged Finn, a love of music pushed to the side for something more stable. But what? He struggled with where he was going in life for the better part of his high school career. By the time college rolled around, Finn acknowledged his innate leadership and people skills and decided to run with that by pursuing a major in education, as well as a minor in public relations. Once out of college, he had no trouble finding a job teaching english, but instead had a problem keeping interest. Annoyed at how things had turned out, he couldn’t deny his unhappiness with his career and quit. His heart jst wasn’t in it.
Struggling with where he was going in life yet again, he stumbled across an ad for a personal assistant and applied for it, on a whim. Not only did Finn land the job, but found himself immersed in the world of theatre. Minimally of course, but still excited to be around the talent and spectacle broadway. Finn, though the assistant to one of the minds behind California Dreams, isn’t mandated to be at every rehearsal. Yet, he is - a certain brunette has kept him coming back, something about her reeling him in. More than that, she’s inspired him.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE.
IF YOU COULD PLAY ANY ROLE ON BROADWAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Wow, I kinda wish I knew more roles on broadway right now. Maybe I wouldn’t be drawing a total blank then. Oh, I got one - the guy in The Last Five Years. You know, the lead. That’d be awesome - and a long shot, but yeah.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE ROLE YOU’RE PLAYING NOW? I don’t really feel anyway about it, since, you know, I don’t really have one. So, yeah.
ARE YOU EXCITED TO BE PART OF THIS PROJECT? I guess you could say I’m a part of it, since Will’s a part of it, and I’m his assistant, so I guess I am too? Anyway, yeah, it’s exciting working for him and being around all these talented people. Also makes me feel like a talentless joe schmoe, but it’s cool. Kind of inspiring, actually.
WRITING SAMPLE:
[this is from elsewhere, but is still in the character of finn]
Finn wasn’t the type of person to go out dining by himself constantly. Or at all. If he was dining at a restaurant or someplace fancy, it was at the request of others that had invited him or were visiting in town in the moment. Working as a mechanic wasn’t exactly an easy job, the toll of each day’s work felt by the time he was able to leave. And by that time, he wasn’t in any mood to get dressed in something somewhat presentable just to eat something - especially after a much needed shower and the fact that he could easily pick up his phone and order chinese food or pizza to the house, without having to worry about tips or any of that stuff. This day was different though. Finn was feeling happier, more open to changing it up, something that most definitely that to do with the bonus he had been awarded for his hard work at the job. Of course, Finn didn’t tell him that he tended to spend more time yapping away and tweeting things he was sure all of three people cared about when the boss wasn’t around. Nope. No need to enlighten him on that end.
Hell, it didn’t matter anyway. He was great at what he did and he knew it. Spending the summers in high school working at his step father’s shop, fixing the cars, weren’t wasted. He learned more there than he had in school - at least, that’s what he tells everyone when it’s mentioned. The truth of the matter was that he never intended to use that knowledge once he left Lima. He never intended to move to Atlanta either. Or get a job as a mechanic. Or kinda sorta like it. It wasn’t the worst thing in the world by any means. He was getting paid for doing something he was good at, enough so that he could afford his own place and relax at the end of the day knowing that he was financially stable for the time being. Life had thrown him quite a few curveballs over the years, and maybe this one was actually working out. He had a nice bonus in his check to validate it anyway.
With that check, he decided to do something a little different. Finn was taking himself out to dinner. With no love life to speak of and his friends and family scattered across the states, it was just him. And that was fine. But he was going to be enjoying a nice dinner for once. Besides, he kind of liked eating out - it was just the inconvenience of it all that never appealed to him like takeout or cup noodles did. With that i mind, he showered quickly after work and got dressed quickly. Next was the decision of where he was going to be eating. Ugh, choices. Indecision had him contemplating for a half hour before settling on an italian place he had heard good things about. Besides, he was in the mood for some chicken parmesan.
Finn stood in front of the restaurant for a minute before allowing himself to head on in. After being seated, Finn took one look at the menu and felt overwhelmed at the amount of delicious looking meals there was to choose from. Thankfully, he had already decided on what he wanted before even arriving. It wasn’t long before he, in his mind, deemed the restaurant ‘the best thing since sliced bread’, which was funny due to the fact that sliced bread was the reason he was so elated. Before his order was even taken, like an angel from heaven, a girl had come by and placed some bread on the table to hold him over until his meal. “Are you serious?” was all he managed to say, practically whispering to himself as he dug in.
Just like the horrible timing that seemed plague him, his waitress arrived while he, stupidly, stuffed a rather large piece of bread in his mouth. Finn began trying to chew before she could notice, or in enough time that he didn’t leave her standing there staring at him trying to choke it down. Acting as if he was looking over the menu while doing so, he furrowed his brow as the waitress began speaking. A familiar name and voice, not to mention the tone of it, had him lifting his head to glance at her and, then, choking on what he had in his mouth. Boy was this a good idea. After embarrassing himself in front of someone he wasn’t so sure he was excited to see, he looked up at her. She didn’t seem to be acknowledging that she knew him, but he wasn’t letting that slide. He couldn’t, not with his mouth dropped open the way it was. Recovering with a goofy smile, he just simply said, “Hi Santana.”

Congratulations, Krae. Welcome to Big Finish as Noah Puckerman. Please make your account, send it in and go over the new member checklist.
CHARACTER: NOAH PUCKERMAN AGE: Twenty-seven BIRTHDAY: November 2, 1987 FAVORED SHIPS: Puckitty, Pucktana, Puckcedes, Quick, Puck/sex, Puck/female ANTI-SHIPS: Puckleberry (romantically linked), Puck/male (romantically linked) HOMETOWN: The Bronx, New York City, NY OCCUPATION: Puck works for his landlady as the on call handy-man. When things break after rehearsal hours, he is the one who responds. In return, he gets cheap rent. In the summer, he also takes care of the pool that is out back of his building.
CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY:
Noah Puckerman is the child of a broken home. He doesn’t broadcast this fact, and doesn’t really care what you think of him, however, it is still a fact. His Jewish mother (Dalia) was born and raised in a Jewish neighborhood of Manhattan, and fell in love with a bad boy from the Bronx. When she became pregnant halfway through her pre-med undergraduate, her parents disowned her and she quickly had to get used to a life very different from the one she was used to. After Noah was born, things were alright for a time with the little family, but when he was about six months old the pushing and shoving started happening. Things escalated until Puck was a little over a year old, and his dad disappeared. Dalia thought things would be fine, but instead a couple of years later he showed back up in their lives, shattering the little bit of stability she’d created in his absence. Things got worse and worse, and as Puck grew older sometimes his dad would take out his anger on his young son. When he was about eight, and his mom was pregnant with his little sister, a social worker showed up to their house. It turned out that the ER doctor was getting a little too suspicious about the accidents that Puck had and thought the family should be looked in upon. Puck lost his dad that day, and hasn’t looked back since. He took on the role of man of the house and is fiercely protective of both his mother and sister. He takes care to send a third of his pay check every week to his mother.
After his dad left, Puck was a little confused, though in the Bronx and going to the public schools, it wasn’t all that uncommon to not have your dad around. As he entered middle school, he started hanging out with the type of kids who were all going to end up joining gangs, and, though he never joined, Puck was as much of a hoodlum as the rest of them. He ended up doing a short stint in juvie, missing part of his freshman year of high school. When he got out, he really wasn’t all that interested in cleaning up his act or staying in school. It was only because he had screwed up, like his father, and gotten a girl pregnant that he realized this wasn’t the guy that he wanted to be. He isn’t still with the girl, though he gets to see his daughter (Ava) one weekend a month and he makes sure to send a third of his pa y check to them every week as well. After all of that, Puck realized that he didn’t want to turn into his old man. He was going to be better than that and work damn hard to ensure it. He got involved in some after school activities in high school, including theatre, and was pretty decent at it. He even got to play the lead in Grease his senior year.
Puck got a full scholarship to a community college, but he had no idea what he even wanted to study. He ended up getting training to do HVAC and has worked ever since for different apartment buildings in the city as a repairman. It pays decent enough, but when he is trying to support his mom, daughter, and feed himself, it’s really not enough. Recently, he found out that he has a half-brother, which sort of explains where his dad had disappeared to at the beginning of his life. He likes Jake fine, but at the moment their relationship is a bit strained. When he auditioned for California Dreams, it was on a whim, never thinking he’d get a call-back or cast in the show. Working odd jobs is getting him by, but if this show actually takes off the money might actually be enough that he could stop just getting by and start getting ahead.
As far as his personal life and dating goes, Puck is two sides of a coin. For a while in high school, he dated his baby momma and things went fine. He was a perfect gentleman, and he still considers her to be his first love. He’s had a couple other serious relationships over the years, but they always seem to end for one reason or another. When he isn’t in a relationship, all Puck really cares about is the sex. That isn’t to say he’s a chauvinistic asshole, but he doesn’t let just anyone in. He’s slow to trust, but once you’re on his good list he’ll look out for you no matter what. He is a constant flirt, and some say that it was a little more than his talent that landed him the role of Aaron in California Dreams. While he takes his jobs seriously, he’s still undeniably a badass. Just because he acts like he doesn’t care, doesn’t mean that he isn’t internalizing everything. He’ll fight for what he cares about, and doesn’t put up with anyone’s shit.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE. (Please answer the questions below in first person and in character)
IF YOU COULD PLAY ANY ROLE ON BROADWAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Any role on Broadway huh? I think it’d be pretty fucking hilarious to play the main dude from Book of Mormon. It’d be like the total opposite of the real me… But for real, I think it’d be really cool to play Billy Flynn from Chicago or Roger in RENT.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE ROLE YOU’RE PLAYING NOW?
Really freaking surprised I got it. I kinda wish Aaron wasn’t such a pussy, cause let’s be honest he’s kind of weak, but it’s cool.
ARE YOU EXCITED TO BE PART OF THIS PROJECT?
Totally, nothing better than maybe getting a break in life right? Plus, it beats working my ass off fixing old ladies air conditioners and shit.
WRITING SAMPLE:
Puck wasn’t sure when he’d started caring about the younger blonde. Of course he’d thought she was hot, but attractiveness was different than admitting to her that he needed help in school. And, this wasn’t even meant to be one of those study dates where he pretends to need help and then ends up doing the horizontal tango in his bed. No, he was legitimately worried about not graduating. The fact that most of his friends were getting acceptance letters to colleges wasn’t helping his mood lately either.
He gave his room the once over, deciding it was clean enough since there was no rotting food or laundry on the floor before heading downstairs to wait for Kitty to get there. Hopefully, she wasn’t a bitch tonight because he wasn’t particularly in the mood to fight. He especially hated fighting with girls because when he got too angry all he wanted to do was punch something, which he learned from his dad, but he didn’t want to be like that.

Congratulations, Ariel. Welcome to Big Finish as Sam Evans. Please make your account, send it in and go over the new member checklist.
CHARACTER DESIRED: SAM EVANS AGE: 25 BIRTHDAY: May 19th, 1989 FAVORED SHIPS: Sam/Chemistry, Fabrevans, Samchel, Samtana, Blam, Sambastian, Sam/Pretty Much Everyone, Sam/His Comic Books ANTI-SHIPS: n/a :) HOMETOWN: Sam was officially born in Nashville, Tennessee to two loving parents, although due to some financial problems he moved around a lot. Although, if he wasn’t in New York, you’d probably find him in Louisville, Kentucky with his family who got back on their feet when he was in high school. Even though Sam’s father has been employed for quite sometime now and Sam’s well on his own, the thought of “What if it happens again?” still lingers in his mind. That’s the reason he makes sure to send some money home, regardless of how much he makes or what job he has. OCCUPATION: Sam’s pretty content with having one job at the moment and doesn’t want to carry the burden of managing two jobs. Although, if he had his way and was completely in charge of rehearsal dates, he definitely wouldn’t mind working part-time at the comic book shop down his street. Not so much for the money, but more so of the fact that his nerdy passion kind of got lost, with all the time he spent in the studio modeling.
CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY:
Sam’s life wasn’t always completely stable. In fact, with all the moving around and making sure his family was doing well financially, he didn’t really have time to think about what he wanted to be when he grew up. So when his last resort was all he had left, he took up stripping. It made money, and it really wasn’t that hard. After all, Sam had never really been ashamed of his body.
Almost by accident, a wandering photographer stumbled into his club one day, and the rest was history. Of course, he wanted to be a model! Anything was better than stripping. After that, his career took off and his life became a whirlwind of demand. And frankly, that overwhelmed him. For someone who was never very good at time management, shoots every day for god knows what magazine got crazy really fast. And more than that, he hated only being known as ‘that extremely attractive model’. He had other talents, too.
Putting that career behind him, Sam liked the idea of starting fresh. He had always loved putting on shows for his parents with his little siblings as a kid, and even though acting wasn’t exactly the same, it always intrigued him. Pretending to be someone else in a way, was kind of like being a superhero, and that was good enough for Sam. Hopping from part to part in cheesy, lesser appreciated shows for a while, (everyone has to be a T-Bird at least once in their life) Sam was quite pleased to find out that he had been cast as a lead in California Dreams. Although his excitement was short-lived, with the arrival of some new performer taking his part, he figured that with the potential he had, he could easily work his way right back up to the top.
Then again, he definitely isn’t ready to turn the show into another stress battle and knows that even though he isn’t as important anymore, ensemble, as well as the whole experience will (hopefully) only be fun.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE.
IF YOU COULD PLAY ANY ROLE ON BROADWAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Oh, gosh. This is probably one of the hardest questions you could probably ask me. That, and what’s your favorite superhero? But, I guess since I’m probably expected to answer and not be vague, I definitely think I’d have a great time playing Joe Hardy in Damn Yankees. I’m not sure, but there’s definitely something appealing about playing a guy that sells his soul to the devil to become a dashingly handsome baseball star. Growing up absolutely obsessed with baseball, that would have to be one part I’d have no trouble with getting into character and don’t call me a sap, but the romance bit is pretty nice too. Much better than having the one of the romantic leads die. Don’t get me wrong, I love West Side Story, but I’m definitely more of a happy endings kind of guy.
Then again, if I had the power to make the show completely safe, I wouldn’t be opposed to playing Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. My reasons? Spider-Man on Broadway. That’s pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. Being a superhero is the dream everyone (myself included) wishes they could live, but being a Broadway superhero? That has to be at least ten times better, one of the deciding factors being that it’s actually possible. Or at least, much more possible than the dream of suddenly waking up and realizing you can fly.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE ROLE YOU’RE PLAYING NOW?
Truthfully, I’m excited. Sure, it would be even more exciting to be one of the main characters, and you know…have a name, but I’m not complaining. Everyone has to start somewhere, right? I’m sure that if Wolverine wasn’t in all those wars with his brother, he probably wouldn’t be that kick-ass of a fighter like he is now. I guess it’s the same with Broadway, you gotta work your way up the ladder. Or so I hear.
And from what I hear, ensemble’s way less stressful than leading the show. And I’m pretty thankful for that. I mean, sure, if I was the lead and got everything down, it wouldn’t be all that hard, but stress is honestly the last thing I need right now.
ARE YOU EXCITED TO BE PART OF THIS PROJECT?
Extremely. I’m going to have time to actually sit back and relax, not be hounded by creepy girls who seem to know every single thing about me, and I won’t be yelled at every time I walk into rehearsals for gaining a pound. I never understood how my manager could tell, but she always did.
I’m also pretty excited because this production sounds like so much fun. Sure, I haven’t really been in the business that long, but the people here have to be nicer than the one’s I’ve met modeling. (The girls that look really friendly in those ads? Yeah, they’re actually the complete opposite.) Plus, I’ve seen Broadway shows, and the respect I have for the actors is tremendous. I’m really looking forward to being on the other side and learning all the behind the scenes and elements that are required to put on a fabulous show.
WRITING SAMPLE:
Here’s some nerdy high school Sam :)
The first Wednesday of every month was one of Sam’s favorite days of every month. Why? The bus fare was cheaper on this fare and cheap bus meant easy ride downtown. Downtown meant comic book shop. And comic book days were very sacred to Sam. He knew that his family didn’t have much money, and he knew that excessive spending wasn’t very good in cases like Sam’s but he couldn’t help himself. Quinn didn’t share in his love for comic books. Not that many people did, so it was Sam’s secret obsession. He even would allow himself to buy a new comic book. If his life was a video game, the happiness bar would be full.
Sam loved comics. They were like books, but they had awesome pictures and pictures were a necessity when reading. Sam didn’t enjoy reading as much because of his dyslexia, but with pictures it was so much easier. Mixed up words all jumbled and twisted didn’t seem that bad when you could still somewhat follow the story. Being as selective as selective goes, Sam was definitely picky with his books. It was harder to read for him and he wasn’t going to waste his time stumbling over words that didn’t make sense.
Hence the comic books. Comic books were a whole different level of awesome. They were almost better than books, never ending and ever so dramatic. All of the superheroes had their distinct personalities that you learned to love. Also, it was pretty cool how you got to learn more and more about them every time a new book was published. Sam adored them all, and honestly, nothing could make Sam happier.
As far as superheroes went, Sam’s favorite had to be Batman. With no real powers, Sam loved how Batman could achieve so much just because he wanted to. Aside from being super rich and smart, Bruce Wayne basically had nothing and then all of a sudden decided to devote his life to saving the world. That was a true superhero to Sam, someone who wasn’t born with abilities like Superman, but someone who decided to become good out of the goodness of their heart. If Sam were younger, he’d say he wanted to be a superhero when he grew up, but now almost a man, Sam could only dream of being as cool as Bruce Wayne.
Or maybe Wolverine. He was pretty cool if you thought about it, a crazy awesome mutant with razor sharp claws, a practically indestructible guy (well, unless you chopped off his head) who could be pretty nice and caring when he wanted to. But Marvel was a whole different territory, and Sam was definitely more of a DC kind of guy.
Stepping into the comic shop after taking in a big breath of the musky air in the room that he loved so much, Sam couldn’t help but smile at the familiarity of the wondrous place he was in. He knew every corner by heart and every spot for every book. It was like a nerdy heaven that he got to go after all the annoying drama that he had at school and all the tests he had to cram for. If it wasn’t such low pay, Sam would have loved to have worked here. He would be the best salesperson. After sending a warm, friendly smile to the shop keeper’s way, Sam immediately rushed to the Batman section, eagerly looking for a comic book he hadn’t read.(There weren’t too many.) After searching for a little bit, Sam finally decided on an awesome looking one, with an awesome cover of Batman and his nemesis, the Joker, who was way more evil than he seemed. After curling up in the corner, Sam smiled to to no one in particular. With that, Sam could tell that today was going to be a great day.
(and some stripper Sam because yay)
Sam hated his “job”. He couldn’t believe that he actually had to go the extreme and pursue the last thing on his list. The list of things to do to help his family and their battle with poverty. And stripping was his last choice. He had assumed his looks and dancing skills were good enough to be accepted into the new kind of nightlife, and boy was he right. Being put as the “main attraction”, he was immediately hired after being told that his innocence and boy next door looks were perfect for the “job”. And that was how he, Sam Evans, became a stripper.
If you love being in nice, quiet spaces with as little people as possible, everyone fully clothed, and soft romanic music playing in the background, Stallionz would not be for you. It would be the ideal setting for Sam, if he was a horny teenage girl, a horny teenage guy, or a horny adult. And Sam wasn’t either of those, he was just plain, silly, immature Sam. At least at home he was. Giving his “adoring crowd” and “/super sweet/ boss” what they wanted, Sam wasn’t known as Sam. He was known as White Chocolate, the sweet, young stripper with great abs. Girls adored and fawned over him, and everyone loved him. Except Sam himself. With an ego draining audience, Sam was forced into another personality, one he didn’t like so much. Just to please, Sam had to look innocent, but think dirty. He had to convince everyone to buy what he was selling, sex. Or that’s what his boss had told him.
All he had to do was put on a pretty face, do some body rolls, strip down to his underwear, and wait for the money to start rolling in. Sure he made money, but working as a stripper didn’t do anything for his love life. Sam shuddered at the thought of being with someone who felt pleasure in watching him dance erotically. It was stupid, thinking you could fall in love with the love of your life working where Sam worked, so he just shrugged love off. He’d get it eventually, when he wasn’t working as a stripper and his life was fixed up. But now, there was no way whatsoever.
After finishing the show that seemed to last forever, Sam couldn’t wait to go home and turn back into his regular self. Not his weird alter-ego self. Trooping backstage to his own private dressing room,Sam couldn’t wait to get his street clothes back on, and get home in time to tuck Stacy and Stevie in. He had made enough for today and just wanted to be normal again, as he jiggling his jeans back on, followed by his favorite green lantern shirt, and his awesome purple hoodie. Grabbing his water bottle, Sam only wished that no one would be out to see him. On occasional days, girls would stay behind hoping to meet Sam, and other times creepers would bring money and ask for private shows. That was where Sam drew the line. Sure his alter-ego self was a stripper, but Sam had to have some self dignity to say no. And thank god he did.
Opening his door and stepping out to the cool night air, Sam scanned the scene quickly and only noticed a mysterious dark haired girl who looked about Sam’s age. With just his luck, he could be home in time to tuck his siblings into bed. Making sure that the boy was there to talk to him, Sam pulled out his phone and waited to be approached, laying low for all the time being.

CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY:
Don’t know how to describe Rachel Berry? Here’s one word that can’t be denied: star. Ever since she could talk, she started to sing. When her fathers heard that young soprano voice, they knew their only daughter was special. She enrolled into voice lessons the same year she booked her first role, which was Young Cosette in Les Miserables on Broadway. She stuck with it for a long time, falling in love with the spirit of Broadway and everything it had to offer. She continued to do musical theatre at every chance she got, balancing it with private schooling and valued family time. She booked many shows and became well known in the Broadway community and was well on her way to growing her stardom by her early twenties. That was until darkness came into the light.
Word spread like a forest fire whenever there was a scandal in the world of musical theatre, and unfortunately, Rachel would experience that first hand. A rumor began that Rachel “slept her way to success,” and everything went downhill from there. She never commented on that rumor in person, she just released a statement saying the rumors were completely false and flat-out slanderous lies about her. However, that was Rachel’s lie of her own. When Once was on the search for a younger actress to play the role of Girl, it ended up being between Rachel and another actress with a more rock or folk sounding voice. Long story short, before the decision was made official, Rachel did end up having sex with the director, but it was never her intention. Just one too many drinks during happy hour. Although she didn’t talk about it to anyone, the mistake worked in her favor at first. No one expected her to get the role since her voice was commonly known as traditional Broadway, so when she began her run, audiences and critics were pleasantly surprised. But then someone somehow found out about the one night stand and spread the story around. The unresolved sexual tension resulted in conflicts within the cast and crew, making it seem like she was hard to work with and overly moody. It all got the best of her and her performances diminished in opulence over time and she got fired for the first time in her career. When all the negative attention became too much, she ran away to a quiet estate in Florida and spent quite a bit of time there, her dads frequently visiting her. She stayed in hiatus for almost two years. Then one day, she was contacted about California Dreams.
Hesitant to return to the stage, she eventually flew back up to New York and auditioned for the show. The audition went really well, and since she was familiar with the creative team, she was looking forward to getting the role of Sam McGruff. That was the role she was positive she was being considered for, so she felt confident about it. Now would be her time. This was the perfect place in her life where she could rebuild her career and get the success she was destined for. She’d become Sam McGruff, help build the show, hopefully get nominated for a Tony Award, and win… Well, that all turned out to be a silly fantasy when she got cast in the ensemble. She wasn’t going to accept the part at first — it just felt like nothing was going right for her from the rumors to this; not even her talent would save her from this sinking hole she was in, so she might as well have stayed there. She soon decided it’d be good for her to get back on stage, and not long after the workshops ended, she talked with her longtime friend, Shelby Corcoran. Rachel learned that she wanted her for the role over newcomer Marley Rose. Ever since finding that out, Rachel has made it her mission to get that role so she can get that Tony nomination that would completely revamp her image. After all, who was Marley Rose anyway? However little known this girl was, she successfully made it on Rachel’s bad side. But what Rachel wanted was simply for the good of the show. Honestly. Marley had nowhere near the talent or experience that Rachel did. The show needed Rachel to be Sam and Rachel was going to get that role. Whether it be from doing the things that got her in a career slump or from luck or from the hard work that got her in this business, she was sure of it. She could do it. She was tempted to start writing a Tony acceptance speech now.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE
IF YOU COULD PLAY ANY ROLE ON BROADWAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I’m assuming that this would mean any role in any show on- or off-Broadway, or even off-off Broadway, so I’ll answer it according to that interpretation. While California Dreams has been a great experience thus far and I can’t wait for everyone to see our hard work, the role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl has always been a dream role of mine. As I’ve said many times, I have personally found a deep connection to Fanny Brice and Barbra Streisand who, of course, popularized telling Fanny’s story with such magnificent characterization. Barbra has always been an idol of mine, and after watching the film Funny Girl when I was a young girl in Newark, I became obsessed with her and subsequently, Fanny Brice. Hopefully someone will consider reviving the show after me just saying that! (And consider me to play Fanny!)
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE ROLE YOU’RE PLAYING NOW?
Konstantin Stanislavski, a great Russian teacher of the art of acting whose teachings are still very active in theatre today, was highly regarded in talent and methodology when it came to approaching any role. He once said, as many people often hear in any show, “There are no small parts, only small actors.” When actors get frustrated with ensemble roles, which is very natural since all of us crave attention — that’s why we do this, honestly — I think it’s important for us to stay positive and embrace the possibilities to challenge ourselves as creative people. Of course, I was intent on having the lead in California Dreams, especially considering my experience and extensive resume. But with that said, I should make it clear that I’m happy for Marley Rose. She…um, reminds me of a younger version of myself and I’m excited to be her understudy. Anyway, to answer the initial question, I’m pleased with my role. Small role or big role, you’re dealt the cards you’re dealt. I am by no means a small actor — maybe by height! But I make the best of every chance to perform. I love the show and the people apart of it, so I wasn’t going to turn down the experience. A casting director told me awhile ago that you shouldn’t turn down guaranteed work. That’s what I did with California Dreams and I’m happy to be apart of this great ensemble.
ARE YOU EXCITED TO BE PART OF THIS PROJECT?
Honestly, I at first wasn’t very excited since I went into my audition confident with the job I did to become Sam McGruff, but after bonding with this cast over this period of time with the show, I’ve become increasingly more excited to be apart of it. I can’t wait for everyone to see it! Based on my time in this business, I truly feel confident it will be a hit.
WRITING SAMPLE: (I was torn between writing one to the plot and using my usual para sample, so I hope it’s okay that I put both. I know that can be a little obnoxious, but hopefully you don’t mind. If so, I apologize in advance!)
Romeo & Juliet AU Sample:
The words coming from the mouth of the drunk friend with whom Rachel was speaking seemed to smash together the more they took sips from their alcoholic beverage. The more that happened, the less attention Rachel paid to her friend, and as her eyes continued to float over the crowd, she made eye contact with someone who must have been looking at her for at least more than a few seconds. Normally, she probably would have been disturbed, thus diverting her attention to another viewpoint or moving to a different area of the room, but something about his eyes…they seemed so bright and welcoming — clearly something that should cause no intimidation, which she could tell even from afar. A part of her was glad that the dancing bodies keeping them away from each other blocked their eye contact so she didn’t seem like a crazy girl who just stared down attractive boys, even if she did want to see him better. Did she forget to mention how attractive he was? He surely was graced when it came to genetics; a tall, structured frame from head to toe, with distinct features and a beautifully sculptured jawline. From what Rachel could see, he was gorgeous all over, but truly, what stood out to her were those eyes. Different from anything she’d seen before. All she could think about was getting to see them better, rather than from so far away.
She kept trying to look at him, but it seemed that his figure had moved from the original spot and she couldn’t see quite well from the moving adolescents surrounding her, her height working against her once again. Sure, he might’ve been impressively tall, but it was still hard to continue to follow his body with all the madness going on around them. Thankfully, she didn’t have to wait too much longer once he was closer to her, the two now able to see each other better than they had just moments ago. And he was breathtaking in front of her. His size could’ve been very intimidating since she was so small, but the expression on his face was so soft and cordial and she couldn’t move her eyes away from his. She froze in place as he walked closer and closer and closer to her, licking her suddenly dry lips as subtly as she possible could. And then he was right in front of her. And then —
He said he liked her shoes.
"Oh." It was all she could say in that moment as she continued to look up at him until she looked down at the shoes she was wearing; dressy black leather sandals with a small wedge. "Thank you, I…um, they’re from Aldo," she said, looking back up at him. "But I doubt that’ll do you much good. Unless you’re looking to buy a pair for a girlfriend of yours, perhaps. Or your sister. Or mother. Whoever is the main woman in your life. If you are, I’d suggest taking them with you for them to try on; I typically wear a size six, and I had to go up an entire size just for this shoe, which was definitely a first.” She stopped herself before she began to continue on about something that wasn’t intriguing. She offered him a close-lipped smile, tucking a piece of her wavy hair behind her ear as she felt the nervous heat build all over her body. She’d never felt this shy — and almost awkward? — in her entire life. “I’m Rachel,” she decided to say, sticking out her free left hand to shake his. “Are you drunk or under the influence of something? I didn’t think you were when I first saw you, but I can’t say I was exactly expecting you to compliment my shoes.” That probably wasn’t the best thing to say, she was sure it was too forward, but she didn’t want to waste her time having a silly attraction to someone who wouldn’t have felt the same if he were sober. To her, his eyes said sober, but the greeting…she wasn’t so sure about it.
Big Finish Sample:
Rachel was a pot of water sitting on a stove. Here she was, sitting along the perimeter of the rehearsal room with the rest of the ensemble and a few other title roles as they watched Marley and Sebastian work on “Tell Her I’ll Be Waiting.” Sebastian was talented and dedicated, which was obvious to everyone, but there was Marley… Everyone enjoyed Marley and was kind to her, always happy that this role was given to a fresh-faced Broadway newcomer who was sweet and could carry a tune. Great. But as Rachel sat with her fellow ensemble members, many of which were new to professional theatre, she could point out each of Marley’s flaws when it came to interpreting the character and the songs her character sang. It was almost hard to watch — such a mediocre performance that bothered Rachel to no end. Rachel could do that dance move better, she could sing that note so much better, or she wouldn’t have done that hand motion at all. There was no question; that should’ve been Rachel up there. Sam McGruff was an active supporting role. Just imagine if Rachel had gotten that role instead of a lead; it would be her first move to redemption and get enough people buzzing about her. Instead, she was stuck singing back up, forced to lie and say she was enjoying it so she’d seem like a good sport. Why did she even return to this business?
She watched Jesse St. James, their director, stop the song and approach Marley and Sebastian to give them some notes and suggestions. Rachel watched Jesse’s hands, gesticulating to exhibit his passion about this show and these characters, making them push themselves to do something better and make better choices to ultimately make the show better. It was so mesmerizing to see such passion like that and it got to her every once in awhile, suddenly peaking her interest in that moment. This is why she returned. It was a passion that could never break, no matter how frustrated she got. Jesse smiled at the duet partners before announcing to every one that they could take five and be ready to clean up the finale number when they returned. “Thank you, five!” she called out respectively with the rest of the cast, checking the time on her phone before grabbing her water bottle and getting up from the floor. She looked at Jesse with an intrigued look on her face as she watched him organize some planning papers on his table that progressively became messier throughout the rehearsal that day. She decided to approach him on a friendly, professional stand point since he appeared to be stressed out by how the end of the show was turning out. Rachel was well aware that this was almost always the hardest part for the director because something constantly seemed wrong, but it wasn’t easy to tell if that was a fault of your own work or the book or the music. She wanted to chat with him, just to give him a bit more optimism about the project. The process was stressful, but the final product was always blissful.
Rachel knew Jesse from doing a few concerts with him and a few other Broadway peers at 54 Below, as well as seeing him at other performances and award shows. They were familiar with each other and had potential to be close friends — for now, they were simply in the same show and at significantly different levels of authority. She walked up to him and greeted him, the greeting clearly throwing him off. “Everything always ends up falling into place at the last minute, this will be no different, even if it is your first time directing.” He didn’t say anything, which caught Rachel off-guard so she cleared her throat awkwardly before continuing. “Marley’s doing a pretty good job to be working with these heavyweights. But that D-sharp above middle C still isn’t…” She shook her head and put on a smile. “She’ll get it right. You’ve been doing a great job.” Jesse turned his head and gave her a look of suspicion ready to say something. “Uh-uh. I already know what you’re going to say. And you’re wrong. Just let me know if you need any suggestions, I’ll be happy to help you out. Okay?” She gave his upper arm a friendly pat offering him a matching friendly smile. She walked out of the rehearsal room to refill her water bottle, feeling his eyes on her as she walked away. As she exited, she made eye contact with Marley, her smile sliding into a smirk as she walked out. This business was all about networking whenever your talent managed to fail you. Besides, she wasn’t planning on doing anything more than simply having lunch with Jesse; if she did anything more, well…we all knew how that would turn out. But it was good to establish some more intimidation into innocent Marley Rose who had no idea what would be coming her way on the road to get this show to Broadway.
