Actor Mark Gatiss tells Radio Times about the ādangersā in Bookish season 2 ā as Gabriel and Tottieās marital arrangement is under threat.
Mark Gatiss has always enjoyed sleuthing in the sun. Yes, the Sherlock co-creator agrees murder mysteries are most often associated with dark winter nights, but also notes that āa lot of the famous ones have big, exotic, foreign settingsā.
āWhen I was in Poirot 100 years ago, I absolutely couldnāt believe I was doing Appointment with Death, because we went to Morocco,ā the Bookish creator and star tells RT.
āI got to wear linen ā thatās what itās all about! So I think it actually goes both ways.ā
Admittedly, the real reason Gatiss is returning with his own murder mystery during the summer months is more prosaic: āItās when weāre on.ā The U&Alibi crime drama Bookish returns for its second outing in August, and while the new series doesnāt visit sunny climes, it does move away from its bookshop setting in Archangel Lane.
āThe whole thing has a slightly broader canvas,ā Gatiss explains. āIn episodes 5 and 6 we go to Germany. I also think itās more intriguing emotionally. Some of the secrets are unlocked and some questions are answered.ā
Of course, some of that comes from the nature of the genre. āA murder mystery is a puzzle, and we have for a long time liked a puzzle with a dead body,ā Gatiss muses. āThe key, though, is that itās not just that. You can explore all kinds of things, as the show does. Iāve been very chuffed with the response to the lavender marriage, and the whole set-up of the show.ā
In the first season, we discovered that Gatissās bookseller detective Gabriel Book is gay in 1946, when homosexuality was still illegal.
His marriage to his best friend Trottie (Polly Walker) is a mutually beneficial arrangement, but heading into season 2, it will also be a source of jeopardy.
āTheir arrangement suits them both, but itās not without its dangers,ā Gatiss teases. āWeāll see a bit of that, and we do see a bit more of it fraying at the edges.ā

Itās not fourth wall breaking, to me, if the character is talking to another character. Sherlock does it often enough in the series when we areĀ āthe deduction wallā, as in when we are watching from the POV of the wall or the monitor. These ones are more noticeable because these are the ACTORS ā NOT THE CHARACTERS ā LOOKING AT THE CAMERA.Ā
The John one is the most blatant one, I think, because itās ALL MARTIN, and itās Ā the LONGEST ONE; HE LITERALLY ACKNOWLEDGES THE CAMERA AND TAKES A SIP OF WINE:
So yeah, gang, please add others if you see them. Remember: they have to NOT be part of theĀ āscriptā of sorts. Just the actors breaking character and staring at the camera.

Yes, itās positioned right over her shoulder, but even on my initial watching of the episode, it STRUCK me. Same with Moriarty talking ātoā Mycroft in TFP. And when you think about human eye focus, if youāre talking TO someone, you donāt usually FOCUS your eyes on a point OVER THEIR SHOULDER. Sometimes we DONāT focus, look into a middle ground or off into the distanceā¦ but looking AT THE CAMERA is a deliberate act, and it stands out because actors DO NOT DO IT UNLESS THEY ARE BREAKING THE 4TH WALL.

Iāve got a good one, but first I need to clarify this: the girl in distress representing John is the only one lookingĀ exclusively at us. Thereās no other character in that plane sheās meant to be looking at.Ā The rest of themāwho, unlike the girl, present themselves through screens forĀ other characters to see so weĀ also get to seeĀ themā are the villains. Yes, Eurus too, during the time John dreams of her as the evil figue. Because once she is āunderstood and redeemedā though, Sherlock no longer sees her in a screen, but in person.
You can tell they asked the lilā actor to look into the camera from the moment she says āplease, help meā until the rest of the take. Looking directly at us is an integral part of the story. Now, in light of the topic around which Johnās dream revolves, I interpret that JohnāsĀ asking for OUR help. Calling us to action.Ā By making eye-contact with the heteronormative audience, they are forced to look back at him tooĀ (bi-visibility) and decide if they are going to help or not.Ā This is a social problem and the character is involving us. Thereās no escape from the āAm I invisible, can you actually see me?ā question. Theyāre practically begging people to change perspective for once so John Watson can finallyĀ break free from the chains of queerphobiaĀ and be happy. How do yaā like them apples?
