Found Wanting

Grey is a tough thing to describe. It lies along a spectrum of descriptors no better or worse than the other. Not virtue, not vice, it is a situation that can be approached with infinite justifiable perspectives looking as infinitely insignificant and similar as every other possible path you could take.

Coming here, I wanted so much to be made into the person I aim to be. I wanted to develop relationships that would lead to potential partnerships down the line. I wanted skills and strategies that would allow me to get what I want in the future. Now, I have been found wanting even more. I came hear to build habits of greatness through hard work but recently I have acted as if I deserved everything and didn’t have to earn it. I could not have imagined a group of fellows this amazing. Now, our praises have been sung and we all feel great, but we need to gain perspective and continue to address our personal development.

I heard a lot of interesting things in response to a questionable act. Something that deserved to be seriously considered, which was discussed by forty bright twenty-something year olds, all with varying degrees of remorse, involvement, and interest in said act. A week ago, if I were told that Andrew wouldn’t recommend any of our characters or actions when asked, I would have called you crazy. “He said, we’re the shakers and movers of this country,” something I knew he believed then, but now there is, if nothing else, a question of a doubt. The staff and all of us know that there is work to be done. Something I believed we knew and demonstrated on day one. Today should be no different than the day we were brought together. It’s time to work on being the VFA representatives and the people we hope to be.

Day #4 - Hour 17

As I work in a state of minor delirium with my team, Divine Providence, I find myself acting in a way that exhibits extreme comfort and trust. For the past 98 hours I have spent every waking moment getting to know my fellow fellows and I am surprised by how quickly our friendships have taken root. I find myself enjoying long work days with minimal breaks because I have belief in each and every person working alongside me. I am exhausted and want to go to sleep, but I feel an obligation to support 4 people who I have spent less than a weeks time with. I have even felt an obligation to help other groups, all of which are my direct competition. When you know someone is putting everything into all that they are doing you want them to succeed and that is how I feel about the 39 other people who I spend my days with. Some groups have made unbelievable strides while others have seen all their work lost to the mysterious reapers known as failed servers. There is no question that some group's websites will be better than others - there will be the extraordinary and there will be disappointing - but to know that you can look at your teammates, regardless of the outcome, and believe to your core that they did everything in their power is a rare feeling...
