“During my time as a part-time teacher, I was sexually harassed by a full-time teacher 20 years older than me. He did it, telling me that he’ll push for my promotion… The first time it happened, I didn’t tell anyone. I thought, ‘I should just forget it. If he knows it’s shameful, he won’t do it again,’ and considered it settled. But instead, he started to retaliate against me. To push me out of my job, he spread rumors about how I hardly worked and how arrogant I was… When I couldn’t stand it anymore, I reported him to the Ministry of Education. During that process, everything that could have gone wrong, did. He even put bribe money in an envelope and gave it to someone he knew I would have a hard time refusing, but I gave it right back. Even worse, he came up to me, promising me that he’ll make sure that some other faculty members sponsor my promotion… Later, his wife came and got on her knees, and started crying in front of me. Because I was just another woman like she was, I pitied her at first. Every time she came, I listened to her pleas; but little by little, she started to become demanding. I urged her to get her husband to submit a resignation letter, but she kept putting it off. I told her that if this kept happening, I would sue her husband. There were so many twists and turns. And truthfully, I almost lost myself during all of this. I honestly thought about just accepting that envelope and quitting my job… because everything was so difficult. But one day, I asked my students, ‘Suppose one teacher has hit other people, and another teacher has never hit others, but has sexually assaulted someone. If you had to choose one of them to be your teacher, who would you choose between the two?’ All of the students said that they would prefer the teacher who has hit someone. That helped me make up my mind. I thought, ‘I’m going to choose what’s right for the students. Not what’s best for me, but what’s right.’ In the end, I resisted the temptation to give up, and that teacher was fired.”
“기간제 교사를 하던 중에 저랑 20살 차이 나는 정교사한테 성추행을 당했어요. ‘내가 널 밀어줄게’ 하면서… 처음엔 당했어도 아무한테도 얘기 안했어요. ‘그냥 잊자. 저 사람도 부끄러운거 알면 이제 안 그러겠지.’ 싶어서 그냥 그렇게 해결될거라 생각했거든요. 근데 되려 저에게 보복을 하더라고요. 저를 밀어내기 위해, 저를 일 안하고 건방진 사람으로 만들면서 저를 비방하는데… 더이상 못참겠다 싶어서 교육청에 보고를 했죠. 그 과정에서 별 일 다있었어요. 돈봉투를, 그것도 치사하게 제가 거절하기 어려운 분한테 전달해서 제게 내밀길래 다시 고대로 돌려 보내기도 했고, 다른 교직원이 저를 밀어주겠다고 약속하기도 하고… 나중엔 그 정교사 아내분이 와서 무릎 꿇고 우시더라고요. 저도 처음엔 같은 여자로서 불쌍했어요. 그래서 오실 때마다 하소연도 들어주고 그랬는데, 점점 저에게 바라는 게 생기시더라고요. 제가 그 사람의 사직서를 요구했는데 사직서 제출을 차일피일 미루려고 하셨어요. 이런 식으로 나오면 형사고발 하겠다고 했죠. 우여곡절이 정말 많았어요. 그리고 사실은 저도 그런 과정에서 방황을 많이 했어요. 그냥 돈봉투 받고 그만둘까… 솔직히 말하면 힘들었으니까. 근데 하루는 제 학생들한테 물어본 적이 있어요. ‘너희들 만약에 한 선생님은 사람을 때린 적이 있는 사람이고, 다른 한 선생님은 사람을 때린 적은 없지만 성추행을 했던 적이 있어. 두 선생님 중 한 명을 선택하라면 누구를 선택할래?’ 라고… 근데 아이들이 전부다 차라리 사람을 때린 적이 있는 선생님이 낫다고 하는 거예요. 그 때 확신이 생겼죠. ‘아이들을 위해서 옳은 선택을 하자. 나에게 득이 되는 선택이 아니라 옳은 선택을 해야한다.’ 라고. 결과적으로 유혹을 다 뿌리쳤고, 그 교사는 파면당했어요.”
