An interior shot today (on tour 🙊) in the Chapel of Reconciliation on the Berlin Wall Memorial. The memorial is an absolutely incredible site and the chapel (consecrated on 9th November 2000) is a fantastic piece of architecture!;) posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2XxGbTl
Not a single artefact in sight;) Interior shot looking skywards in Neues Museum. posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2wBJQDQ
View from Museum Island. A day off yesterday...so hid from the heat in the Neues Museum. Always a pleasure in there. Incredible building, collections and amazing refurbishment by David Chipperfield Architects. posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2Xq9K9q
Nice "little" tour today in Potsdam and always a pleasure to visit Sanssouci!:) posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2Vwkg1M
Popped into the Märkisches Museum last week and bumped into an "old friend" in their fantastic new Berlin History Exibition. Officially the oldest medieval pig thus found in Berlin. Excavated him on an archaeological dig waaaaaaay back in 2012 on Klosterstrasse, next to the Dutch Embassy. It was located inside a medieval building which was destroyed by fire in the late 12th Century. Birchy's favourite Berlin museum, for many reasons other than the pig!;) posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2VSWLzu
Otto Von Bismarck, first Chancellor of Germany, basking in the sun today in the Tiergarten with Atlas at his feet. This statue, like the Vistory Column, was moved to its present location by Albert Speer as part of the Germania Project. posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2Zz71vP
Looking west at Bellevue S-bahn station. 3 minutes before post tour 'beer o' clock'!:) posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2VWK43s
And now we can start thinking of the summer to come!:) posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2PgCu0V
Ding Dong. Had a nosey underneath the Carillon in the Tiergarten today for the first time. It was gifted to Berlin on its 750th birthday in 1987 by Daimler-Benz. posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2Pf8bYr
And yes...here is the obligatory Berlin Cherry blossum shot! This time on Turnstrasse. Behind we see part of the upper southern facade, roof and clock tower of Richard Ermisch's Tiergarten Town Hall. This was built between 1935 and 1937 and is a good example of 1930's integration of traditional and modern architectual elements. posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2v6vvhP
Birchy's favourite part of Mitte!:) A view of the northern wall of the ruined Franciscan Monestry Church (and a bit of cheeky TV Tower action). The church and monastic complex was developed after the land (just inside the old city wall) was handed to the Franciscans by the then Margraves of Brandenburg in 1271. Not only does it represent some of the oldest structural remains in Berlin but also the first Gothic brick-built architecture in Brandenburg. Unfortunately the church and associated structures were greatly impacted by the Allied air-raids during the Second World War. The ruins are now used for art installations in the warmer months. posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2UEQKqt
Looking skywards inside Günther Behnisch‘s Academy of Arts, Berlin….and a bit of colour for a grey morning!:) The Academy has occupied that site from 1907 – 1937 when the Building was requisitioned by the Reich’s Inspector of Buildings. At that time the chief inspector was Albert Speer who no doubt at the time was very much pre-occupied with his and the Fuhrer’s “Germania Project”. The building was heavily damaged during the Second World War and was largely demolished by the East German Government, with the exception of the rear of the building. This was used by the East German Border Forces, in part, as a temporary prison for those caught trying to escape in West Berlin. The original elements have been preserved and incorporated into Benisch’s 2005 build. Poke your head in and have a look if you get the chance. Also a nice place for a coffee away from the hustle and bustle of Pariser Platz!;) posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2UQfWsZ
One hell of an imposing structure on Reinhardtstrasse! This air-raid shelter/ bunker was designed Karl Bonatz and constructed in 1942 for the Reich railway company. It was intended to provide protection to railway passengers who found themselves in Friedrichstrasse Station during an air-raid. It now houses the Sammlung Boros and has a glass-walled penthouse constructed on the roof. Basically my dream home!! posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2VLQ3I0
Spring is back...proper! :p A view west with sun going down behind Sir Norman Foster's dome atop the Reichstag. posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2IlcEHF
An unexpectedly cold, grey day in Berlin. Shorts were not a good idea but one plus was that the statue of Alexander Von Humboldt has emerged from his winter shelter. So welcome to 2019 Alexander!! :) Father of agricultural science, meteorology, marine biology and the man who predicted potential human related climate change in 1832! Infact, a man so awesome there is even a penguin named after him! Humboldt not Alexander! posted on Instagram - http://bit.ly/2FRiduB
Spring has sprung on the Tiergartenufer... and everywhere else in Berlin!:) A little view of Peter Joseph Lenné's Landwehr Canal beyond the S-bahn viaduct. posted on Instagram - https://ift.tt/2IdG2j5
