this is Brian. Brian belongs to (x group) and wants to reclaim a slur directed at said group. good for you Brian.

this is Jake. Jake also belongs to (x group) but has bad past experiences with said slur and asks that you not call him that. good for you Jake.

Brian thinks that because he’s reclaimed the slur for himself and wears it with pride , he gets to call Jake that too, no matter how many times Jake asks him to stop. Brian is a massive fucking dickhead. don’t be like Brian.

In the same vein, it’s important to note that, as long as you have the ability to reclaim a slur and use it to apply to yourself and not somebody else, you shouldn’t be vilified for using it. If use of a reclaimed slur makes someone uncomfortable, then by all means, they’re free to ask you not to use it around them, but it isn’t appropriate for them to demand that you never speak of it again even when around other people who are comfortable with using reclaimed slurs.

Hey, man who likes men here, guess what: We care. Yaoi and fujoshi culture actively harms real-life mlm because of the sentiment that two men can’t even stand next to each other without some random stranger taking a picture and posting it on their blog for a bunch of their friends to squeal over these two complete and utter strangers. Other men I know actively avoid geek/anime fandom spaces IRL because if they let slip that they’re gay, they’re immediately besieged with invasive questions about their sex life and relationships by overeager fujoshi looking to make yet another example of their “trashy sin bois” from a real-life human being that’s trying to mind his own business. Straight women liking BL consistently violate the boundaries of actual people by treating them like they’re fictional characters and projecting onto them as an extension of their gross, fetishizing fantasies, so please don’t be so quick to assume that there’s no possible way fujoshi could ever be harmful to gay men, thanks.
