This is how he is today and I accept that. It’s not something I’m going to try to change.
These little moments show something smaller and more human between the two of us: the ability to extend grace to someone who made a mistake.
That doesn’t mean the mistake is okay, and it doesn’t mean understanding someone’s pain or motives is the same as condoning their behavior. It means recognizing where a person is coming from while still holding them accountable.
We all screw up; we all need grace from each other. That is how reconciliation happens.
Sometimes our loved ones need a bit more sharpness, but if you ever take that route, it's important first to check yourself, and ask:
Am I doing this because I'm angry, or I want revenge, or I'm vindictive, or I want to lash out.
You have to be careful when deploying this, because the aggression of your tone may be what people respond to more than what you're saying.
What you would do with one person, could make another person wilt like a flower.
It is a powerful skill to be humble enough to drop your hurt, your disappointment, especially when somebody is contrite and willing to change.
Consider,
Well, I’m still mad at you, but I appreciate you saying I'm sorry.
Your focus determines your reality
