1.) He discovered this one early into their relationship, when the sex came easier than the actual emotions of it all. When Jack would grip Dennis's hips with his massive hands and dig his thumbs into the divot of Dennis's hips where the nerves there made him tremble. Dennis tried to grip anything else- the pillows, the sheets, his own hair, before one particular down stoke and Jack's thing with his tongue made Dennis's back bow off the bed.
His hands flew down before he could control it, tangling in his silver curls and tugging. Even if he hadn't heard the moan that Jack let out, the vibrations of it down his shaft made Dennis squirm as he gasped out his name.
Jack only came up for air once Dennis had came down his throat, shaking apart in his grip. A faint flicker of curiosity crossed Dennis's brain as he tugged on the curls covering the crown of his head. Jack groaned, his eyelids drooping for a second as the feeling rocked through him before his eyes darted up to Dennis's and he let out a huff of air. He continued his crawl up to bracket Dennis with his arms, craning his neck down.
"Jesus kid, warn a guy." He croaked, pressing a kiss to Dennis's lips.
"Are- are you blushing? Do you like when I do that?" Dennis asked when they parted, still a little breathless and now a little coy at his discovery. It was clear now- a blush colored the man's tan, freckled cheeks.
"Den-nis-" Jack started, only to groan out the second syllable as Dennis tugged again. Dennis grinned and leaned up to kiss him.
"That's hot."
"It's childish, is what it is. 50 years old and I still like getting my hair pulled like I'm a teenager." Jack grumbled into Dennis's neck, trying to kiss down Dennis's neck in a way he knew would distract him, the bastard.
"No it's not, it's hot. Stupid hot. I like making you a little crazy, you do it to me all the time." Dennis whined as Jack's teeth worried at the skin by his collarbone. "Hey, you're doing that on purpose-!"
"If you can talk still I'm not doing my job right, honey." Jack mumbled into his skin, kissing down his chest as Dennis huffed out a sigh of exasperation and let it go. He'd tuck it into his back pocket for later.
2.) To say that he was caught off guard by the smell of chocolate and Guinness when he stepped into his home was an understatement.
He felt his breath snag somewhere, maybe on his ribs, maybe on the ragged edges of the hole his wife had left, as he tried not to stumble his way into the kitchen. Seeing Dennis's broad back and curly dark blonde hair as some easy listening played in the background brought an odd mix of heart warming affection and gentle melancholy. Dennis looked over his shoulder and smiled brightly.
"Hey! Sorry, I- hands were full with frosting stuff, I didn't hear you come in!" Dennis gingerly set down the piping bag and walked around the island to give him a peck on the cheek. "I hope it's okay I'm making a mess in here, I just.. um, I found this recipe? And I thought since it was your birthday tomorrow I'd make it?"
From the small box of recipes tucked into the corner on the counter by the kitchenaid that had been collecting dust was a recipe for "Jack's Birthday Cake." Jack took it from Dennis's hold and thumbed the round edge. Seeing Liz's handwriting on that beaten up little index card squeezed Jack's heart just a bit.
"Yeah- yeah, Den, go nuts. Ask Robby, I could probably burn water if I tried to bake something." He mustered up, giving Dennis back the card as he peered at the cake still half-frosted on the counter. "Lord knows this stuff just collects dust otherwise. I got it to be used."
God, when did Dennis get so close to his sore spots?
"I know it's not your birthday yet but- do you want to have some now?"
"It's close enough. Only, what, a couple more hours?"
"17, actually."
"Mm, semantics."
Jack slid onto a stool as Dennis plated a few slices. He could tell Dennis was nervous about his reaction as he cut into the moist looking cake with his fork and brought it to his mouth.
It was just as delicious as he remembered it. Jack savored the bite before swallowing it and clearing his throat a bit of the rich frosting.
"I haven't⊠it's been a while since I've had this, I'm- thank you, sweetheart." Jack blinked away the concerning prickly burn in his eyes- Jesus should he get checked for something?- as Dennis's smile softened and he gave Jack another longer, gentler kiss.
3.) "I should have known you had ulterior motives." Jack grumbled as he smacked Dennis's wandering hand away, breaking their kiss as Dennis chuckled. "You fuckin' menace."
"Am I not allowed to enjoy my boyfriend's assets?" Dennis asked with a small pout as he wiggled out of his jeans, tossing them in a small pile in the corner of the bathroom.
"I'm getting harassed by my coworker half my age, I should report you to HR."
"I'm your- yeah, you know what, go ahead. Tell them I keep you in the basement too." The sound of the water hitting the tile filled the room with white noise while he unfolded the shower bench.
"Yeah, this kid gropes my ass and keeps a disabled vet in his basement. I get food and water, sunlight on the weekends."
"Who gave you internet access? I took your phone away when you tried to call the cops."
"Santos shows me TikToks when I'm allowed out to go to work." Jack smiled at Dennis's giggle, standing up to hold out an arm for Jack to take. Dennis grunted as Jack pulled himself up and grabbed the bar with his other hand, lowering himself carefully onto the bench. "Don't you ever grunt again when helping me up, you're making me feel fat."
Jack harrumphed as Dennis laughed again, giggling over his grumblings as he settled on the shower floor between Jack's legs. Suds began sluicing over Dennis's shoulders as Jack worked his hands through Dennis's curls, the soft citrus scent steaming the air as Dennis closed his eyes and hummed.
He almost missed it- the way Dennis tilted his head and pressed his lips to the skin of his calf while he was tilting Dennis's head forward to suds up the curls at his nape. He huffed as he felt his cheeks prickle with what he knew was a blush.
"You sap." He murmured, tugging on his curls lightly and making him straighten again.
"Mmm, yeah." Dennis turned himself around and took his calf in his hand, dipping his head to press a firmer kiss to his shin. Jack hated how it made his stomach flip.
"Oh my god, I gotta beat you off with a stick." Jack spluttered, jerking his leg out of Dennis's hold. "What's gotten into you?"
"Just want to kiss my boyfriend, is that illegal?" Dennis pouted up at him. Jack leaned over him to unhook the shower head from the wall and brought it over his hair instead of answering.
4.) Jack never wanted Dennis to feel like he wished he was a woman.
He still liked lingerie, was the problem. He liked when his wife would put on something pretty in whatever color she decided to wear. He kind of missed the feel of his on his hands when he would pet her sides, or the thrill of seeing the strap peak over the waistline of her pants. He liked seeing her shine with that kind of soft confidence of wearing something pretty just for herself.
Dennis had those moments, but it was things like sneakers or a new button up he felt good in. And that was fine. He loved seeing Dennis confident in what he wore.
The incident occurred on his birthday. Dennis had been weird and giggly all morning, rocking on the balls of his feet as Jack finished the breakfast Dennis had made him before saying that he had Jack's gift upstairs. He remembered being a little touched that Dennis made sure to shuffle his feet as he walked behind him, that he expected the hands that went over his eyes and Dennis's voice trying for something sultry as he murmured, "Wanna see your gift?"
It was a joke. It was obviously a joke. The way the cups of the bra gaped from his chest with nothing to fill them, to the glimpse of his dick not even fitting in the tiny lace panties the outfit came with. It all said that Dennis had grabbed it off the rack without a second thought to if it would actually fit.
That didn't make Jack's harsh inhale any less obvious. That didn't stop his eyes roving over the delicate pink lace of the babydoll that fell over his abs and the jut of his hipbones, softened it into something that Jack wanted to sink his teeth into. His eyes darted up to Dennis's face, waiting for the goofy smile or "gotcha!" or any sign that this wasn't what he thought it was.
Dennis's eyes were on his face as Jack wiped his sweaty palms on his sweatpants and shifted slightly.
"Oh- you really like this, huh?" Dennis stepped forward and came to a stop between Jack's legs.
"Dennis-" Jack croaked as the man took his hands and put them around his waist.
"You can touch, you know. It's your gift." He murmured. Jack nodded slowly where his eyes were still locked onto Dennis's abs, sweeping his thumbs over the straps of the panties and swallowing thickly.
"You're gonna kill me, angel."
5.) It was a thing on TikTok that Trinity had sent him with the message, "you should see what Jack does."; a couple walking to the car when the obvious passenger princess hops into the driver's seat while their partner watched incredulously. Usually the person would say something smarmy like "hop in, princess, I've got you." and the rest of the video would be the chaos that ensued. It was funny. Dennis asked why Trinity couldn't do it and she said that Baran locked the car doors until she was right next to the driver's side.
(Most likely due to Trinity's insane driving, but that was something Dennis kept to himself.)
It popped into his head while they were walking back from a dinner date, fingers interlocked as they made their way back to Jack's Santa Fe and climbed inside. It was on impulse that his fingers reached down and plucked the car keys from Jacks' hand and twirled the keychain around his index finger. Jack looked at him, his eyebrow cocked in disbelief.
"And where do you think you're driving with those, Den?"
"I'm driving us home tonight, actually." Dennis replied smoothly. The pedals had been fitted so that Jack could control the gas with his left foot instead of his right, but Dennis wasn't actually planning on driving anyways. Dennis reached over and gripped the meat of his thigh, squeezing it. "I've got it, princess."
If they weren't enclosed in the car and close to him, he probably wouldn't have caught the hitch to his breath as Jack stumbled over his words. "Ha-ha, very funny Den. Gimme the keys."
Dennis stopped and looked at him, his face slowly stretching into a sly grin. Jack's face looked like a fucking tomato, looking doggedly at the keys or at the car's counsel.
"Did you like that, princess?" He purred, watching Jack's face as he scoffed and his ears slowly reddened. "I'll give you the keys if you admit it."
"How about you give me the keys and I don't spank your ass red at home?" Jack answered, over-the-top gruff and huffy. Dennis grinned in triumph as though that had been the only answer he needed before he gave him the keys. Jack took them and turned, pinching Dennis's arm and earning a yelp as Dennis buckled into the passenger side seat.
(Dennis glowered at Trinity when she laughed at how gingerly he sat the next night.)

Getting the right lighting, twisting and contorting his body this way and that, trying to figure out his phone timer, making sure he didn't look like he was straining his body, remembering to fix his face from concentrated to lustful. How the fuck did girls do this regularly?

"More than a fucking 'nice' would have been fine." Dennis huffed, rolling on his side to face away from him. A hand on his ankle made him yelp as Jack dragged him bodily across the bed, bracketing him in with his arms.
"Lemme show you how much I loved it, please?" He asked, brow furrowed and body stock still as he waited for Dennis's response.
"You fuckin' better.")

There are a lot of men like Andrew in Broken Bow, Nebraska. Men whose anger simmers constantly just beneath their skin until it boils over into violence. Men who were told their entire lives, since they were little boys, that the only acceptable way to express yourself is through destruction. Men whose child-selves are kept preserved in a dark, locked room in their chests, peering out at the world in wide-eyed terror.
Despite their differences Dennis does think his father did pretty well raising them, all things considered. Even so, his eldest brotherâs ex-wife has a restraining order against him and the third eldest is back to drinking after getting fired for punching a coworker on a job site. Again.
Maybe thatâs part of the reason Dennis likes Andrew so much. He reminds him of home.

A lot of the time, Andrew just looks scary. He can be so gentle, even when, as so often happens, his expression doesnât quite match his behavior. He dotes on Dennis in his way, ready to drop whatever heâs doing at a momentâs notice to help him run errands or do maintenance around the apartment so they donât have to call their asshole property manager. Even Trinity is starting to tolerate him after he changed the catalytic converter in her car for free. He fusses over Dennis, likes to pick him up from work if he canât get a ride with Trinity because he doesnât want him taking the bus home late at night.
He likes to rest his head in Dennisâs lap, let the other man run his fingers through his curls. His eyes light up any time Dennis thanks him or says heâs done a good job. He knows each of Amyâs cows by name, remembers little details about them and talks about them even when theyâre not on the farm. Heâs always happy to help kids learn new things at the skate park, is known there as someone to ask for help even if it means acting as a handrail for a total newbie for hours. There is a part of him that is so gentle and kind and empathetic.
Even so, Dennis knows that he has a criminal history that includes assault and battery, that heâs done time for armed robbery. Also, reading between the lines, that between his prison sentence and whatever other bad behavior, things were so bad he couldnât keep custody of his daughter even after his wife bailed on them. Dennis does truly believe that Andrewâs turning his life around, but heâs not totally naĂŻve. One day, that other side of Andrew will reveal itself.
It happens on a Wednesday. Dennis needed a ride to the county courthouse to renew his concealed carry permit, and for whatever reason Andrew insisted on accompanying him inside despite his whole thing about law enforcement. Dennis was just trying to submit some very routine paperwork at the Allegheny County sheriffâs office, but somehow it took them like 45 excruciating minutes under flickering fluorescent lights because theyâre having a problem with their scanner and he really didnât need Andrew skulking behind him, mean-mugging the front desk lady for no discernible reason except maybe some macho posturing bullshit.
âCan you please stop whatever it is you think youâre doing?â Dennis hisses at him as they leave. âYouâre freaking people out.â
Andrew just kind of growls, and Dennis has to take a deep, grounding breath to soothe his rising irritation.
In retrospect, they shouldâve gone straight home from there, but thereâs nothing to eat at Andrewâs apartment so they stop at Giant Eagle. Itâs 6 pm, and busy. Theyâre both scowling at the looming palisade of pasta sauces when some dude bumps into Andrew, who immediately shifts into a fucking boxing stance like heâs gonna, what, get into a goddamn fist fight in the grocery store?
âAndrew! Are you fucking kidding me right now?!â
Andrew whirls around. Heâs snarling, shoulders up by his ears. His fists are clenched, the veins in his forearms bulging. He kind of looks like an apex predator and kind of looks like a toddler revving up to have a screaming tantrum. Itâs fucking embarrassing, to be honest. They somehow manage to get through the rest of the errand without further incident but a heavy, brooding storm cloud gathers over both of them and the ride home is silent and miserable.
Dennis holds his tongue until theyâre inside Andrewâs house. âSeriously, what is your issue today?â
Andrew has his back to Dennis, putting the groceries away. Thereâs an effervescent passive-aggressiveness in the way he slams the cupboard doors that makes Dennisâs teeth hurt. âI donât have an issue.â
âOh, come the fuck on. Look at me.â
Andrew sort of turns towards him but heâs glaring at the floor, slouched with his back against the counter like heâs trying to hide from his boyfriendâs assessing gaze.
âDid I do something?â
âNo.â
âDid something happen?â
âNo.â
âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothing.â
âJesus Christ, Andrew, use your words!â
Andrew pushes himself off the counter so abruptly that Dennis flinches back. Heâs got his hands in his hair, pulling at it hard with his fists, takes a few stomping paces, stops, doubles over. Itâs like he has so much pent-up energy his whole body is short circuiting, throwing him into strange, writhing shapes. He throws his arm over his grimacing face, hits his forehead with his fist a few times, takes another step. Dennis tries to give him space but he has to dodge a little as the bigger man throws himself around the cramped kitchen.
âWhoa, Andrewâitâs okayâ"
âI donât fucking know! I feel bad!â
âItâs okay, baby. What do you mean, you feel bad?â
âJust bad! It feels bad! Itâs really fucking bad!â
Dennis has no earthly idea what that means. âBadâ could mean pretty much anything, but the effort of spitting out even just that one indecipherable word seems to have shaken more than a few screws loose in Andrewâs brain. Heâs dropped to the ground, slumped against the sink cabinet, his face in his hands. Heâs still for a second and then he starts hitting himself in the forehead again with a closed fist, hard.
Dennis crouches down beside him, tries to gently grab his fist in both of his hands.
âHey, baby, hey, youâre okayââ
Andrew wretches his fist from Dennis and smashes it into the cabinet. âDonât touch me! Fuck off with that faggot shit!â
Dennisâs brothers, despite all their faults, did their best to look out for him. Beyond being the youngest, he was always the smallest, and the most sensitive, and the one who never quite fit in with other boys. Frankly, there was always something kind of gay about him, and the bullying started in earnest in sixth grade. Of course Dennis has complicated feelings about it now, given that Cody and especially Lowell still sometimes resort to violence with terribly mixed results, but heâll always be grateful to his brothers for sticking up for him even though all three of them got suspended that one time for breaking that kidâs arm. They never even seemed to care if he was really gay or not, just insisted that he learn how to defend himself. They taught him how to throw a punch properly, and also that if youâre small, itâs very important to go absolutely apeshit so you freak âem out and they donât want to fuck with you anymore.
It took a few fights but eventually nobody tried to shove Dennis around anymore. He still didnât have many friends because everyone thought he was a psycho after he walloped Colton Blomquist in the head with a lunch tray, but it was better than getting jumped walking home from the bus stop.
Which is to say, there is a long moment where Dennis considers decking Andrew in the face.
But heâs a fucking adult, so he takes a deep breath. Counts to three. Stands.
When he finally speaks, his voice is icy. âIf you ever speak to me that way again, weâre fucking done. Get your shit together.â
As he leaves, he hears the hollow clatter of Andrew hitting the cabinet again and again and again until it splinters.

I love when a character wants to be someone's dog so so bad. Dont mean it in a sexual way (although that can also be a part of it) I mean like. Let me be your loyal companion let me stay by your side give me a purpose in exchange for endless unconditional love let me stop being a person love me like it's my only use. Love me like that's the only thing I was made for. As you can tell. I'm normal.
Dennis gets accused of having a crush on Robby and he (very unconvincingly) denies this by saying he would never date someone so much older than him.
Robby overhears him and is heartbroken. He wallows for days, thinks about going to the gym or something - maybe Dennis would be able to excuse the age if he lost a little weight? Wishful thinking - and ends up going to a bar to drown his sorrows.
Heâs a little drunk when a younger, equally drunk guy tumbles into him, rambling apologies. And maybe itâs the alcohol and the dim lights, but fuck this guy looks like Dennis. Similar hair, same blue eyes, similar build as well. God they even sound similar.
And, yeah, maybe Robby is pathetic, but heâs drunk and wanting enough not to care, so he takes the Dennis doppelgĂ€nger to bed, not even bothering to ask his name, not willing to risk fracturing the fantasy for anything.
Robby wakes up with a headache, a sore back, and beginnings of regret when he feels a shift next to him on the bed. He prepares himself to feel the stab of guilt and self loathing twisting in his gut as he squints his eye open, readying to kick the look alike out of his bed as politely as he can muster.
The words get stuck in his throat when the very real and not at all a doppelgÀnger Dennis Whitaker is stretched out next to him in bed. He takes a moment to feel the shock, before wrapping himself around the kid and going back to sleep.
Pope goes to the park with Lena, they go every week after school on Thursdays. Depending on how much energy she has, they'll play at the park for a few hours (or go to the library during the colder months) then go eat dinner, making sure to pick up some food for Dennis and Trinity before heading home, keeping the food warm until the pair finish work. Today their routine was disrupted.
Heâs sitting on the bench while sheâs playing on the playground. Heâs watching her with his usual protective intensity, only letting out a smile when she looks his way or comes ambling over. They were there for a while. Long enough that most of the people originally there have gone, replaced by new families. He doesnât notice the side eyes he receives.
Lena starts flagging, he can see it in the longer rests sheâs taking, how sheâs opting for the slide instead of the monkey bars, so he makes his way over, lets her go down the firepole one last time before hauling her up on his shoulder to take her to their usual diner.
Thats when the trouble starts.
A man - probably another dad - approaches, grabbing Andrewâs free shoulder, attempting to force him to turn, gruff voice already yelling. âHey, what the fuck are you doing!â
And maybe Andrew was an idiot, maybe he should have realised what the man was really saying, because replying âTaking her to the car. It's dinner time.â was clearly a fucking mistake judging by the punch he received.

Dennis was exhausted. Fresh sweat was still clinging to him as he sat in the break room 10 minutes after he stopped doing CPR. He should have switched out, and now he was paying the price for being a stubborn ass, arms aching as he tried to rest for a few more minutes before jumping back into the fold. Robby would probably check in on him, he always did.
He was finishing up his protein bar when Trinity poked her head in, nearly falling through the door with how quick she pushed herself in. She whipped her head around, gaze quickly landing on him, hissing out âHuckleberry, you gotta come out here, itâs Andrew.â And then they were both rushing through the ED.
Lena caught sight of them first. She was at the hub with an officer who was talking to Kiara, tear-stained face falling in relief as she called out âUncle Den,â pulling away from them to rush into his arms.
He held her close, picking her up, quickly checking she was okay as Kiara and the officer approached.
âDoctor Whitaker, do you know this little girl?â
Dennis nodded, eyes now darting around looking for the rest of his family, âYeah, she, uh, sheâs my niece. Whereâs Andrew? Trinity said he was here.â
The officer shifted, brow furrowing as he took a menacing step forward, âAndrew? You mean Andrew Cody?â At Dennisâs nod, he let out a noise, âHeâs here. And in our custody.â
âWhat? For what charge!â
The officers eyes darted from Dennis to Lena, and she pressed herself tighter to his chest, âAttempted kidnapping. We have reports that this Andrew Cody guy, a career criminal by the looks of it, attempted to kidnap this little girl, who you say is your niece.â
Both him and Trinity startled at that. He slowly placed Lena down, hand staying on her shoulder, keeping her close, as Trinity stepped forward to protest, "Wh-Kidnap? Are you serious? Lena is his niece! He has custody of her!"
"Well, we don't have the facts right now, so," the officer moved forward, reaching out a hand to grab Lena's arm. As Trinity, Dennis and Lena all moved back, calling out a protest, a yell from a nearby patient room could be heard.
Robby and Ahmad were quick to intervene, getting between the officer and the small family, Lena clinging to Dennis and Trinity, tears once again streaming down her face. "Whoa, whoa! What the fuck is going on here!"
Everything except the patient yelling quieted down at Robby's yell, Dennis taking a moment to look around, trying to catch sight of Andrew, rushing to explain. "This fucking asshole is trying to take my niece!"
"Ay! Language!" Dana called as she approached, crouching down next to Lena, "You okay, sweetie? Hmm? Okay, how bout we go find you something to eat in the break room while the grown-ups figure everything out, okay? If that's okay with your uncle?" She looked up at him for a second, her sharp blue eyes staring him down for a moment before he nodded his assent. He bent down and kissed Lena's head, before letting Dana take her away.
Robby let out a sigh as Dana ushered Lena away, grateful to get the kid away from this mess. He inhaled deeply before asking, "Okay. Now, can someone tell me what the fuck is going on?"
There was a moment of silence before the asshole spoke. "Your Doc's niece is the victim of an alleged kidnapping-"
"By her own Uncle!"
The officer cut Dennis a sharp look, "An alleged kidnapping which caused a physical altercation. That's one of the guys, the alleged uncle, that's yelling over there."
Robby cast a look over to the source of the yelling - room 17, curtain open providing a semi-decent view of where they were all standing, and a bleeding man handcuffed to the bed. Another sigh, G-d why couldn't there be a normal fucking day here? "Okay, officer, we've got our charge nurse with the kid-"
"Lena"
Robby barely spared a glance at Trinity before continuing, "Right, we've got someone with Lena, Kiara can go speak with her as well. But I don't think it's a good idea for you to go see her now-"
The officer scoffed, rolling his eyes and adjusting his stance, causing Dennis to tense and stand up straighter. Robby really fucking hoped this would end soon. "So what? You want me to go in there and take the word of that nutjob?"
"You aren't fucking going anywhere near him."
Robby raised a hand, pressing against Dennis's chest, preventing him from taking the step he was halfway through completing, "Okay! Whitaker, how about you go check in on our patient, maybe see if you can get him to calm down?"
"And let them get their story straight?"
Fucking hell, he was sick of this guy, "Well what the fuck do you want me to do! You can either go in there and talk to him yourself, or you can let my resident calm him down first?"
The officer paused for a while, weighing up the options provided to him, "I am going to go make some calls. See if this guy is telling the truth. I don't want Cody out of my sight. And he isn't going near that girl." He hissed, glaring one last time at the three doctors, before leaving the hub, phone in hand.

Andrew was still yelling by the time Robby and Dennis entered his patient room, voice cracking, wrists thrashing against the cuffs that chained him to the hospital bed.
"Andrew, hey, hey, it's okay. You're okay." Dennis's voice was firm, loud enough to be heard over the panic.
The proximity to him seemed to be enough to placate Andrew, his wild movements calming to anxious fidgeting and his voice quieting to a hoarse whisper as the fight drained out of him, replaced by something so exhausted. "I didn't do anything." he whined, breathing heavily as his dark eyes glistened with panic.
"I know, baby, I know. But we're gonna sort it out, and we'll go home, get some dinner"
Andrew shook his head fiercely, almost manic. Robby was sure he was making the probable concussion he had worse. "They're gonna take her. They're gonna take her away from me again. I- I can't."
As the tears started to fall, Dennis easily manipulated the bed railing, moving it out of the way so he could sit on the bed and pull Andrew into his arms. The older man fell into him easily, readily accepting the affection despite his difficulty in reciprocating with his arms restrained. He tried to show his appreciation and love and need for his partner by pressing his face deep into his neck, ignoring the flaring of pain - he was used to pain, he could deal with a few moments more, but if he couldn't touch Dennis right now, if he couldn't be comforted by him, he would die.
Dennis easily sank one hand into Andrew's hair, blunt nails scratching at his scalp, occasionally tugging against a tangle amongst the curls. "Okay, let's just do this in small steps, okay? Dr Robby is gonna check you over, make sure you're okay. And I'm gonna be with you the entire time. Can you do that?"
Andrew sniffled slightly into Dennis's neck, surely wetting his scrubs with tears and snot (and God knows what else got on there, what was now on him, God what illnesses was he gonna get just from being there, what would happen to Lena-?), "No, no, Lena, you have to- she can't be alone-"
"And she isn't. She's with Dana right now, you know Dana, remember? You've talked to her a few times while waiting for me, she said about taking us to her church?" Andrew pulled away slightly, just enough to see the reassuring look on his Dennis's face, "Yeah? And Trinity's nearby, Lena will be able to get to her if she needs to. Okay? Now, let me see you?"
The gentle questioning and reassurance was seemingly enough for Andrew to pull away from Dennis, who smiled sweetly at the man before moving to the chair next to the bed to allow Robby to work, keeping Andrew's bruised hand in his the entire time.
"Okay, Mr Cody, let's see what we can do for you."

They are stuck at the hospital far longer than any of them hoped for, but it is eventually all sorted out - just like Den said, Andrew thinks - and they're able to go home with Lena late that night. They were lucky enough that one of their coworkers ran out and brought them some food while they waited, and now Lena is asleep in Andrew's arms as they make the long trek back to the park to get their truck.
Dennis and Trinity walk on both his sides, loudly complaining to each other about how the situation was handled and the fact that it even happened in the first place, occasionally taking a break in their ranting to ask if he's sure he's okay to walk and that they could always get the truck and come back to pick them up. He promises them that he is fine to walk and doesn't mention how he's kinda scared to be alone with Lena again - he never wants to put her through that again.
When they do get to the truck, the three of them work together to untangle her fingers from where they are gripping his jacket and safely put her in the car seat. Trinity stays with her in the back, easily drifting off as the drive continues, while Dennis drives (damn concussion), resting his hand on Andrew's, who just stares.
When they get to the apartment, they make quick work of hauling Trinity and Lena inside - Andrew had to carry Trinity while Dennis took Lena, the woman refused to be awoken - making sure both girls were safely tucked into their beds before collapsing into their own. Dennis pulled Andrew close, pressed the older man's head to his chest, gently stroking his battered face and tracing patterns on his back until he was able to coax him into a deep sleep. They were fine. They were safe. Andrew let himself relax finally in his love's arms.
