As someone who was alive when Bob Ross (and William Alexander before him — that’s where the approach is from) was on PBS, I can 100% testify that you can paint along with him.

You may need to learn how to set up your paints and such… but this is what people did, live, while the show aired. That’s what the show was for. I had family members create lovely works of art they enjoyed, which I still have on my walls, because William Alexander and Bob Ross both said:

SCREW METICULOUS CLASSICAL ART PRACTICES — JUST GRAB A PALETTE KNIFE AND BIG OLD BRUSH AND PAINT!

They freed a whole generation of people who were taught to paint detail and realism and exact representation of reality — people who largely gave up this kind of thing because it got tedious.

I watched the joy of family members as they rediscovered art as a messy fun spontaneous half hour activity.

#1 is a hoodie. No doubt about it. Zip is there, hood is there. It is a hoodie.

#2 is where we start to question a little bit. But the answer remains the same. That is a hoodie.

#3 is not difficult at all. That is a jumper. NOT A SWEATER. A sweater is not ugly unless it is a christmas sweater that is intended to be ugly. That third one is a jumper (or a pullover if you want to be different).

#1) zip-up hoodie OR kangaroo jacket OR little jacket #I always called them the latter two growing up but have mostly switched to zip-up hoodie now #because it turns out both kangaroo jacket and little jacket are pretty specific to west coastal Canada I think?#2) just a hoodie #3) sweatshirt #you know what. maybe I should start calling the first one kangaroo jackets again #I think it’s cute.#edit apparently it’s even more specific than I thought #I guess kangaroo jacket was specific to the CITY of Vancouver in the 70’s/80’s #which is where and when my mom grew up so #who then passed it down #no one else is gonna be on my team but 🦘 🦘 🦘

the season of tumblr holidays are upon us!!!

#march 16 is my birthday :’)

sometimes my partner and I have surprisingly different expectations for a certain cultural practice and we play the game of “is this a Canadian vs American thing or a Protestant vs Catholic thing or a West Coast NA vs East Coast NA thing” and rarely come to an answer. A couple months back my grandpa passed away and I was like “I need to wear a brown skirt with this black top to the funeral because I’ll look so silly going in all-black. They’ll think I’m a try-hard Victorian performatively mourning during a celebration of life” and she was like “what.”

#it was a memorial service technically which might play into it #in my experience they are more common among protestants in Canada than actual funerals

Enjoying floral embroidered clothing is so humbling because I’ll be scrolling Poshmark and thinking “oh that’s such a pretty skirt” and then it’s literally for 18 month olds

#right now the toddlers are hogging all the best embroidery #I should learn to embroider maybe #then I can just turn my normal clothes into embroidered clothes.

Someone in one of the units in my (small) apartment building has a big lesbian flag and “DYKE CITY” written on their wall in massive posterboard letters (visible from the outside parking area). Question is do my partner and I respond by putting a “DYKE POPULATION CENTRE” poster or something on our window

#someone in a different unit also has a trans flag #we had a pan flag person too but I think they moved out #there is a barely double digit number of units in this place lmao
