The momentary tension that gripped him released itself upon her reaction; this mystery woman was someone special. “You definitely do,” Adam affirmed, lifting his hand to his chin, and squinting his eyes theatrically, as if in deep concentration. “I can’t quite place it…” he exaggerated playfully, tilting his head as he spoke. “I think that nurses are real heroes. Doctors walk in and out with their clipboards, but nurses do the real work. You are kind. Even if you do not know the trick of the trade yet, that must count as half of the battle.” It pleased Adam that she found his profession interesting. “I am not even sure that I would call it a talent,” he replied humbly, without specifically intending to dismiss his skill. “It was the first thing that I became aware of besides my name. I found a pad of paper the same day of my arrival, started doodling…” He met her gaze again and chuckled. “—And I tell you! It wasn’t half bad!” It was spectacular, objectively; but if Adam was being honest, he truly just wanted to hear her laugh again.
Jane shook her head lightly. She highly doubted that she was a nurse in whatever life she had before this. It didn’t feel right, but she appreciated the affirmation. She gave him a sweet smile before speaking. “That may be true, but I’m still not too sure about my qualifications. I feel like I’d need to know I have some actual degree in the field before I’m comfortable with it being my profession. You know what I mean?” She tried to match his playful tone. “I don’t think I have any art skills, so I’d say it’s a very cool talent.” She laughed lightly. It felt nice for her to be able to laugh this easily. It helped her stay distracted. “Well then you’ll have to show me sometime soon.”
