Switching iPhone or iPad keyboard language from Bluetooth keyboard
Quick Tip If you have to write in several languages, you get a small globe icon next to the on-screen keyboard. But how do you switch language when you have a Bluetooth keyboard attached?
Just press Cmd-Space and you can select between all the keyboard layouts you have.
It may not be a scam, but it's a shitty way of getting customers
I just got a letter from Domain Renewal Group for domain name renewal service. Here are some of the tactics they use to try to fool you into signing up. First there are a box with the text of the domain name and then "Reply Requested By:" with a date pretty close to the date you get the letter. There is a paragraph explaining that the letter is sent "As a courtesy", but by using a box and bold letters, that's the first that you read to get you to panic and do something foolish, like signing up for their service. It then follows of warning that You must renew your domain name to retain exclusive rights to it on the web. It's all designed to make you believe you'll loose your domain if you don't pay up.
Here's a scan of the letter I received.
So the letter is a skillfully crafted letter to coerce people to switch their domain service when they really don't need to. You have to read the letter carefully to realize that you are safe, and of course will get a note from your current DNS provider well ahead of time for the domain to expire. It's very likely for a business owner to just sign up for the service (yes, I've seen it happen).
The prices for the service is about twice what I pay now, so they choose this kind of method to try to fool you to become a customer in stead of being competitive.
For shame!
Touch screen mittens - The best Holliday gift for geeks
Ever tried to make phone call on a touch screen phone in -20 degrees C? Most touch screens won't work if you wear gloves or mittens. If you take them off your fingers quickly turn cold and clumsy, making it a hassle to hit the right buttons.
There is, however, hope for all the frozen-fingered geeks out there. There are specially designed mittens that actually work with touch screens!
The photo shows a touch screen mitten from from Telenor Sweden who sell them in their stores. (They come in pairs but I needed the other hand to hold the camera.) You can probably find similar mittens elsewhere. A great Holliday gift for geek friends and loved ones!
Fixing problems with thumbnail images at 500px.com
The Problem
After getting me a very good LCD monitor that displays the entire color range of Adobe1998 color profile, I had problems when uploading pictures to the photography site 500px. The colors of the thumbnail that 500px created looked wrong. Colors was over saturated. I did my usual workflow, exporting my image with Adobe LightRoom choosing to convert to sRGB, the default web browser color profile. When looking at the full resolution picture, everything looked fine, even on web browsers without color management. But somehow, the software at 500px's end did some color conversion that obviously was wrong. This happened even if I selected to not include a color profile.
The solution
By using the excellent program ImageOptim that removes unnecessary comments and color profiles and optimizes the compression, the uploaded pictures now looked great. And that included the thumbnail image! Success!
ImageOptim works with jpg, png and GIF images and is always a good idea to drag your pictures to the ImageOptim application before publishing to the web, because of the size reduction. That the images works better on 500px is an added bonus! The price for this excellent program? Free!

DropBox - The modern thumb drive
Still using a USB thumb drive? For most uses there are better options. I'll start with introducing one of them: DropBox. What is DropBox? Well, if you imagine a USB thumb drive that's connected to all your computers and devices at the same time via the Internet you get a pretty good idea of what it is. A slightly more technical description of Dropbox would be that it's a cloud storage service with a user friendly interface. The best thing is that If you have ever moved, copied or saved a file on the hard drive of your computer, you already know how to use it! It works just like the regular file system. In the two-three years I've been using DropBox its become one of the necessities of both my private and professional e-life. The basic service, which includes 2GB of storage, is completely free. That's less storage than on a modern thumb drive, but far more useful. Here are some of the ways I use Dropbox: First of all I use it to transfer files between all my devices. There are some files that I always want to be able to access regardless of wether I'm using my phone, my work computer, my own computer or my tablet. By storing them on my DropBox I can access them from anywhere. If I ever need to access them from a computer that isn't mine I can always access my files via my account on the DropBox website. A very smart feature is that you can access your documents even if you're not connected to the Internet. Once you get connected again the latest changes are updated on all your devices. Second, sharing folders with friends or colleagues is another great use for DropBox. I work in different projects with different constellations of people. The project members need to be able to read and edit the same documents and keep track of the latest editions. With DropBox this is a breeze . At the start of the project one of the members sets up a shared folder for the project and invites the others as members. Once everyone has accepted the invitation, everything that goes into the shared folder is immediately accessible to all the other members of the project, but no one else. The other documents in my DropBox that are not in the shared folder cannot be accessed by anyone but me. If we invite clients and other parters to also share the project folder they too can access to the latest version of the project documents without any risk of them seeing other documents they should not have access to. Third, my DropBox also includes a Public folder. All the documents in this folder can be accessed by more or less anyone. Sounds risky? Well, in a way it is. You should be really careful about what you put in the Public folder, but it can also be a very useful feature. Each file in the public folder has its own unique web link. If you have a photo you want to put on your blog or website or if you have a document that you want everyone to be able to access, just put it in your public folder and post the link. As an example I used the public folder on my DropBox to host the images in the "Quick Language Switching on the iPhone" article below, until I figure out a better solution. Lastly, I'm obviously not alone in finding DropBox very useful. More and more apps have started using Dropbox as an optional storage and syncing solution. Lots of great apps, like GoodReader, Writing Kit and ArtRage, include features for syncing your files directly to and from your your DropBox, making them directly accessible on all your devices. This is where It really gets useful. This article is stored on my DropBox allowing me to edit it from the device I'm using for the moment. If you want to try out Dropbox just go to their website at [Dropbox.com](https://dropbox.com) and sign up for their free account. It's very easy and they provide you with all the info you need to get started. As I said earlier you get 2GB of storage with the free account. Not much but very, very useful, as I've tried to describe in this post. If you like it and feel that you need more space you can pay to upgrade the capacity. If you do you get a total of 50GB of storage space or more. Although i really like the service I haven't upgraded. To me it feels like a somewhat steep slope; Either 2GB or 50GB. I would have preferred an upgrade to perhaps 10-15GB at a somewhat lower price. I really hope that they'll introduce that in the future.
Quick language switching on iPhone
Ever had the need to type in more than one language on your iPhone? It can be a complete pain - slow typing due to missing keys for common letters in the other language and an overly helpful spellchecker that keeps messing up those carefully typed words. Well, fortunately it's very easy to fix. This post will take you through the steps in no time. By default the iPhone only has a single keyboard enabled that corresponds to the language the phone is set to. When you manually add a keyboard for another language a magic button suddenly appears that lets you switch between keyboards. Here's how to do it. Start of by clicking the "Settings" icon in your home screen. Find the option called "General". Once you get there select "Keyboard" and then ”International Keyboards”. If you have the single language default settings you will find the keyboard for that language listed. Klick the "add keyboard" button underneath and select the additional language from then list that appears. That's it. Now we get to the the magic part. Start an app that edits text. Notice anything different? There's a new button that looks like a globe to the left of the space bar. Just press this button to switch between the keyboards. When you switch between keyboards the spell checking also changes automatically to the other language. All in all it takes a minute and saves you a lot of typing errors. Here's a quick summary: Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards and select the language you want to add. Use the ”planet” button to switch between languages. As you can see in the image above I have three different keyboards enabled: Swedish, English and Emoji. You might wonder ”What kind of language is Emoji?” Well its not some sort of exotic language, but a set of symbols and emoticons that you can use in text messages. There are lots and lots of symbols. You can enable the Emoji keyboard by following the instructions above! Explore and have fun! BTW you can enable international keyboards on the iPad the same way.
