incredible margaret line. even though she's complaining that she never gets to see donald, i think it's exactly why she picked him as a husband. he ticked all the right boxes (rich, high ranking, decent looking) but best of all, he's barely around. she has all the security and status of being a married woman, but she doesn't have to deal with the actual marriage. except for the few times they get r&r and then it's time for her to dress up as a model heterosexual woman and play pretend with her toy soldier. we know from stars and stripes how quickly she tires of playing this part - all it takes is the mere prospect of making two omelettes and she's out. so it would have been a relief for her to be able to say goodbye to donald after a few days and go back to her life at the 4077 as essentially a free woman.
she always seems more concerned about playing her role as a wife than she is about donald - when he has his hernia operation she wants to be with him because she feels a wife should be there looking after her husband. she's a nurse, she knows that it isn't anything serious but she hates that she isn't doing her duty. then in comrades in arms when she finds out donald's cheating on her with another woman, what hurts the most isn't the affair, but the way he refers to her as "sturdy" and uses romantic language that he never does with her. she feels like she's failed in her role as a wife, which is why she goes so overboard with hawkeye the next day trying to force them both into fulfilling their respective gender roles.
i love that he stands up and gives himself a halo hahahaha
normal stuff
i have this recurring fantasy about hawkeye right after the war, depressed, struggling with his ptsd, still living with his dad and having a hard time working or doing much of anything, running into a stray kitten on some dark night in the rain. and while they sound different, a cats meow does have some of the same influence on people as a baby's cries, where it tends to incite very sympathetic and protective feelings. so naturally he's coming home soaking wet SOBBING carrying this drenched little thing into his dad's house because its A Baby and daniel just goes Oh okay!
the book hes pretending to read is green bush by john t frederick. if anybody wants to figure out some deep metaphorical meaning behind that please feel free to chime off
