See I’m not above this because I was an adorable cherubic naïeve teenager when I first joined the mash fandom but now as a grizzled old man of 24 who’s spent a few years doing blue collar work at an all-male company, it’s clear that a lot of the time the stuff that people will point at Hawkeye doing and say “there’s no heterosexual explanation for this” is pretty standard straight guy behaviour in stupidfuck homosocial environments like construction sites and the army (and, I’m guessing, the average mash writers room)
The thing that makes Hawkeye read as queer isn’t so much his jokes about getting pregnant etc but rather in his open disdain for a lot of displays of masculinity (and lack of concern about having typically feminine hobbies) and his disinterest in conforming to heterosexual ideals of relationships - the way he (usually) seemingly has no desire for a relationship, and doesn’t really try to influence the women he sleeps with’s view of him to seem more masculine or in control the way that, like, Margaret’s partners do. Like, people at my work will say “we are going into this room together to kiss and fuck”(direct quote) but if I say “I don’t care about any sports, I’ve read at least one book in my adult life, and I don’t plan on getting married”, THAT’S what gets clocked as maybe gay. If you want to make a joke about being gay, you have to display signifiers of heterosexuality, and Hawkeye kind of doesn’t.

Children, especially to the characters in MASH, are the representation of life and innocence. Hawkeye, as a character, is defined by his love for life. He is a doctor with a vested interest in humanity, thrust into a war against his will, who does everything he can to preserve that life. Pregnancy is not only a joke to Hawkeye, or something said in passing as a quip or subversive statement, but a concept he treats with respect and dignity, and in the midst of such great injustice and cruelty to human life, carrying life into the world would help him fight just that little more against the war. In the words of BJ Hunnicutt, “All we see around here is death and destruction. Now, in the middle of an inferno that even Dante wouldn't buy tickets to, there's a little glimmer of life, thanks to you. That's not wonderful; that's a miracle.”"

"Enkidu and Gilgamesh, the original yaoi. Hear me out.
Gilgamesh is a great and terrible warrior king. As punishment for raping brides on their wedding night, the gods create Enkidu, to be his equal in battle and punish him for his cruelty. How poetic then, for Enkidu to leave him with child as part of his punishment. Gilgamesh has to endure the pain of childbirth over and over until it is equal to the suffering he inflicted upon the brides.
Then Gilgamesh becomes friends with Enkidu and they travel together. Even gravid, he is still fierce. Together they vanquish Humbaba, the guardian of the Cedar forest.
His growing belly reflects his growing devotion to Enkidu. He daydreams about how the two of them will teach their children to be fierce warriors with no equal.
So when the goddess Ishtar propositions him, of course he turns her down. In her anger, she asks her father to send the Bull of Heaven after him.
Gilgamesh and Enkidu manage to vanquish the bull without supernatural assistance. However in doing so, they incur the wrath of all the gods. The gods strike down Enkidu with illness. Gilgamesh is by his side as he does.
The extra twist of the knife is that Gilgamesh will never get to raise his children with Enkidu. He goes into labour alone.
And he endures suffering equal to that he'd caused."

Like the laugh track, the timeline, there are plotholes, things are repeated. Thats why it seems like a timeloop and why things dont meet up. Thats how he's seeing everything and how it all feels to him
Thats why when his friend dies we dont hear about it again. He doesn't wanna think about it ever again and it becomes just another suppressed memory
