Reasons I’ve been gone so long:

1) Unemployment is, believe it or not, something of a drain on the tanks of writing fuel (she said sarcastically)

2) Finally watched Project Hail Mary, sobbed because I’d forgotten how much I love it since I last read the book four years ago, and immediately fell head over heels into bloodymary hell

I desperately need and want to get back to my LoA fics but I am so completely brainrotted and spaceyaoipilled about them. I deadass think I could do a small essay on how perfectly the ship, just as a concept, is so perfectly tumblr (non-detogative for once) and so perfectly thematic to scifi as a whole.

Not "The Character did nothing wrong" or "The Character is irredeemably awful" but a secret third thing: The Character may display moments of deep love & compassion, may even have a strong sense of ethics, and may also be capable of brutal cruelty that is irreconcilable with those traits. The constant tension between the different sides of The Character's nature is exactly what makes them compelling, and attempting to reduce them down to simply "a terrible person" or "innocent & misunderstood" is missing the point of the questions a media with nuanced characters is asking you to consider

Velvet had a gummy and listened to Wait For Me from Hadestown one too many times.

I need Lethica to suffer. I love her, I love her I love her I love her. I need her bloodied and crawling and half-drowned in the consequences of her actions, dragging herself forward to salvage what is left. She is Pride incarnate and I need her broken on the floor with the ruined prices of all her machinations around her.

I need a stark reversal of the vision she had when waking up after the Bite, with the flame and blood and someone’s gauntleted hand around her throat: she goes to strike down an enemy with her chakram because of course she does, her goddess’s most loyal servant, but then the pale flesh separating around the blade is Marius’s, anguish and shock and hurt in his eyes.

I need her to be warned and to disregard it. Specifically, to be honest, I need Marius dead in her arms as she asks herself What have I done? and for once she has no answer, as she knows exactly what she did.

What will you do, Lethica, if your goddess asks something of you that you are not willing to give? I need to know.

Listen, maybe I’m just chronically online and need to go touch grass, and there is zero wrong fun and people can and should ship and create as they please, hard stop. That said, sometimes the popularity of one ship that is M/M over the canon F/M ship smells…. A little misogynistic? Is the M/M relationship really that much more engaging and interesting? Or are we ignoring the female character’s nuance and layers and background and story and her own history with one of the male characters? “Honestly I kinda hope…” and you can! And you should! But I can’t help but side eye folks that completely, well, seem to ignore the woman without—from my POV—engaging with her as a character at all.

Edge of Midnight spoilers and some Thoughts below:

On rewatching, Lethica states she’s thinking about staying in Druskenvald and that she feels it could be home to her (IIRC) and Marius says he intends to go home, that there’s something he has to do.

I wonder if—given they both survive the campaign and make it out still Themselves—there’s an outcome where The Dutchman Must Always Have A Captain. There must always be a lord or lady (or lord and lady) of Druskenvald. Maybe if Phillip and Adela don’t make it out, Marius and Lethica step into their positions. If Lethica wants to be able to stay, and Marius wants to leave, maybe that will manifest as walking between the worlds on the Ghostlight Express, as Phillip and Adela do.

Edited to add that my part of my reasoning is the encounter in their return to the Crooked House where Marius and Lethica had to take the positions of master and mistress of the house and symbolically lay in the bed together to bridge that symbolic gap. Nikkie does nothing without nuance and reason, so I’m wondering how the meaning and significance of that moment is going to echo through going forward in the campaign.

NeOd is going to drag another chapter of Midnight Waltz out of me, I just know it. I had so much fun writing it.

I want to give Marius my ultimate blessing: a touch of silver fox. Marius with both smile lines and a frown carved from stone? Marius with a few grays? Marius pushing forty-forty five and looking damn good doing it? Jump his ass, Lethica, do it.
