My Top 10 KiriMina Moments
For Valentine’s I wanted to do another Top 10 ship moments list, and I decided “Hey, I haven’t done Kirimina yet!” Up until now, they didn’t have at least 10 moments I could use, but now they totally do and I’m betting the number will only increase going forward. Anyway, I ship these two hardcore (i.e., with nobody else) and I want to celebrate their top 10 best moments so far today!
What happens: Kirishima shows off his Ultimate Move after the Internship arc; Mina is impressed by it.
Why I Like it: Mina’s opinion of Kirishima isn’t as clear as his of her, since we don’t hear her thought process. However, this scene does display that she also thinks he’s cool and admires his technique and new skills, supporting his progress with a positive attitude.
Chapters 27-30/Episodes 204-205
What Happens: Kirishima and Mina end up on the same team (Team Bakugou) in the Cavalry Battle, and work together very well, having each others’ backs and generally protecting each other, like when Mina melts Kiri out of Bondo’s glue.
Why I like it: Kirishima and Ashido work together well here; they clearly get along and can look out for each other when the chips are down. I like to think that Kirishima picked this team mainly because Mina was on it, but that’s just me.
From: Chapter 70-83 (the training camp Arc)
What Happens: During the Training camp Arc and the beginning of the Hideout Raid, Mina and Kiri are basically hanging together, and during his freakout about Bakugou’s kidnapping, we see her looking at him with a lot of concern and asking him to calm down.
Why I like it: You don’t think about this the first time around, but on a re-watch after the whole past between them comes out, this becomes really interesting - knowing as she does how guilty Kiri felt about failing before, she’s the only one in Class A who knows the full context of his passion here.
What Happens: During the Joint Training Arc, Kirishima is shown focusing on and cheering on Ashido during her team’s fight, in particular, both praising her and supporting her.
Why I Like it: Kiri gets to have the spotlight on supporting Mina, showcasing how impressed he is with her and how he likes her strategies and work. This is also part of an ongoing trend in the Joint Training Arc for the characters to fixate on someone important to them making progress as well…
#6. Body moving before you can think
From: Chapter 144-5/Episode 72 “Red Riot”
What Happens: During Kiri’s middle school years, he sees two classmates being attacked by Gigantomachia. He can’t bring himself to move fast enough, and Mina saves the day instead, forcing Kiri to do some serious self-evaluation.
Why I like it: While this is one of the sadder times in Kiri’s story, he also gains inspiration from it to be a better person, a better hero, and it comes from Mina being the one whose body moves before she can think, who acts to save the day and shows him what he’s missing as a hero.
#5. “When I see someone amazing like Ashido”
From: Chapter 144/Episode 72 “Red Riot”
What Happens: In Kiri’s flashback part 1, we see Mina solving a problem he can’t, and hear his classmates praising her. In his narration, he contemplates how cool she is, and how inspiring he finds people like her.
Why I like it: I don’t know if I have to elaborate too much here. Just like before, Kiri is impressed with Mina, and thinks her actions in saving the people around her are just the coolest. She’s the kind of hero he really wants to be, and he admires her - even though she’s simply making peace and brake dancing, rather than punching things.
From: Chapter 163/Episode 78 “Smoldering Flames”
What Happens: Post Internship arc, Kiri comes back to the dorms and Mina greets him, asking him if he’s ok. He looks in her eyes and states that he is, but has a long way to go, showing a sense of camaraderie between them.
Why I like it: This shows that Mina’s interest in Kiri goes beyond their initial conversation in the backstory; it’s an ongoing element in the modern era of Class 1-A as well, and she definitely cares about him, worries for him and supports his journey to becoming a stronger hero too.
What happens: During the Culture Festival Arc, as Mina is teaching everyone else to dance, we spotlight Kirishima’s smile and praise for her as he watches her approach her dance team with passion and inspire them with her tutoring and great moves.
Why I like it: Kiri continues to admire Mina here, and in subtle ways, for her passion and dedication as well as just her strength and honor. It’s another example of him appreciating her as a person and not just a pro-hero, as well as just undeniably sweet.
From: Chapter 68 (Episode 80)/Chapter 256
What Happens: Mina’s reaction to Unbreakable is spotlighted; later on, she shows her new move to Kirishima, where she covers herself in acid and melts through the robots in the retake exam with ease, telling him that she’s based it o Unbreakable.
Why I like it: The inspiration is not one-sided. Mina sees Kiri’s move and his passion, admires it, and integrates it into her own moves as well. She shows how he can help her improve as a great hero too, that she thinks well of him, and makes sure to let him know that the inspiration came from his beliefs and passion.
#1.When you actually overcome yourself…
From: Chapter 145/Episode 72 “Red Riot”
What Happens: Kiri and Mina meet the day before UA; she sees his new hair and exclaims over it. He confides in her about his insecurity and new determination; she encourages him to feel better and to let her know when he overcomes himself. He smiles.
Why I like it: This right here was the moment when I knew I couldn’t ship Kiri with anyone else (or Mina either, for that matter). She’s the only one who knows him for who he was, is and is becoming; she knows him better than anyone else does and he talks to her about his problems, opening up more than for his other friends and displaying his trust for her. She encourages him and makes him smile. I was absolutely sold.
