The colour rose in his cheeks as Evie continued speaking, but he held his ground, meeting her gaze with his own steely eyes, refusing to flinch as she drew near. ❝I have no idea what you're talking about, E. And neither do you, apparently. Don't you have a chemistry book to go read or something?❞

Okay, it’s 2016 now, time to start some serious planning to get myself out of Pennsylvania this year.
Ginny’s quiet. It’s unusual for her. Unnatural. How long since she’s been this quiet in the company of another? She knows she can’t go home. She doesn’t think she wants to. It is better in Auradon. She has to admit that much (as if it could be any worse). And true, she’s met as many welcoming people in her very short time here as she has unpleasant (if not more). But being conditioned to be naturally distrusting of anyone here isn't easy to shake. When she arrived, she thought that might get better with time. But listening to Mal now, she’s starting to change her mind.
Wrapped in her own thoughts, she barely hears his last words. Not enough to process them. Just air passing between them. But somewhere in her mind—subconsciously—they trigger a certain phrase she hears for the first time since leaving the Isle. She's been raised on it. Mother knows best. It's not true, is it? When she was small, she believed it. Back then, she believed anything her mother told her. For the past few years, though, she hasn’t given much though to the words. She’s heard them more than enough to give them little meaning. Like repeating something over and over again, until it no longer seems real. Mother knows best. No more than a string of sounds. As natural as a breath. No, Ginny decides, in an attempt to push the voice out of her head. She doesn’t.
Her feet are falling painfully asleep from being crossed at the ankles, so she folds them up together and draws them in close to her torso. She remains quiet for another second more, hands intertwining around her legs, before giving a laugh. ❝One good thing came out of this, at least. I finally got to hear you admit you’re wrong.❞
The silence that sits between the two suits the male perfectly; it gives him much needed time to reorganize his thoughts and regain some of his self-control. He had never expected learning to fit in at Auradon to be easy, but nor had he expected it to be this difficult. The level of opposition that still surfaced in regards to the presence of the Isle children left him wondering if perhaps the Isle wouldn't have been the better choice, in the end, but it is too late for that now. They chose this life, and there is no turning away from it without forever branding themselves as the same villains that their parents once were.
He knows, deep down, that life here is better than it could ever have been on the Isle—but that does not mean it is easy, and he sometimes resents the children born so effortlessly into this world. Perhaps their parents were more right than any of them had realised, if in ways different than they had imagined. He had spent so much of his life trying to find ways to please his mother that it had never occurred to him he might want different things than she wanted for him. Realising she had been wrong about so much was a relief, but he was only just now figuring out he had underestimated her.
Shaking those thoughts away as Ginny's voice pulls him back to the immediate moment, he finds a wry grin for her, shoulders lifting in a shrug before he raises his arms above his head. ❝Don't get used to it. Everyone is entitled to be wrong about smething once in their life, and I just used my one time. I promise it will never happen again.❞
Evie:
“ Of course, because it’s so much useful to fix the hair of other girls using your special book. I bet you don’t even have a real excuse apart from why you did it for Lonnie and Jane, do you Mal?”
❝I'm sure if you think back, you can recall that doing Jane's hair was supposed to be part of the plan we came to Auradon with. And Lonnie's was just so the two of you would shut up about hair. That doesn't mean we're opening a beauty salon with this book.❞
