Some Jevil face sprites I made!
(this is my first post on here plz be nice)
Hiya! I recently made a bunch of custom 'face sprites' for a certain [Clown Around Town], and thought I'd post them here! I'll also be explaining how and when each of them could be used.
Also, just a heads up: I'm not a very experienced spriter so these might not be great, but I'm still pretty proud of them and would highly appreciate any feedback on how they could be improved!
This is the default sprite, as in it's the one he most frequently uses and the most neutral. Yes, this is the most neutral expression he has. What else would you expect from this hyperactive little crackhead?
This is a slight variation of the previous one that simply removes his pupils and the slight shading between his eyes. I imagine this one would be used when he's speaking more broadly and abstractly, while MAIN would be used when he's adressing the Fun Gang directly.
It sort of gives the impression that every time he goes off on some cryptic rant about the nature of the world and freedom and what-not, his eyes are quite literally 'blinded by darkness', and he is unable to see what's right in front of him as the immensity of the universe pulls him away into delusional fantasy, which I think is rather fitting.
Probably the most unhinged one of the lot, to be honest. The only line I can think of that I would assign this sprite to is when he says: "WHEN YOUR HP DROPS TO 0, YOU LOSE!"
Side note: I think the main reason Jevil doesn't have face sprites in-game is just how little of his dialogue would even use them. He's not visible at all until you enter his arena, and the battle dialogue uses speech bubbles instead, so these could really only be used for his dialogue before and after the battle. I could honestly only see the first 5 of these sprites actually being used at all. The man just doesn't have enough dialogue. C'mon, Toby, I'm starving here!
This one is pretty obviously based on his goofy ass laughing sprite, and thus there's really not anything to be said about it that couldn't also be said about that original sprite.
(also if anyone calls this ahegao im crashing out, you have no idea how much tweaking it took to make it look appropriate leave me aloneeee)
This one is fun. As the name would suggest, he only uses this if you defeat him with PACIFY, as he talks about sleeping for 'the other 100 years', whatever that means.
I ended up adding a lot of shading and wrinkles to this one, since I wanted it to feel like you're getting a glimpse at the real Jevil; a lonely, tired old man who's lost himself in fantasies about a freedom he can never have. Even if his dialogue doesn't really reflect it, his story is really quite tragic when you think about it. And while his mannerisms remain as eccentric as ever, I do think defeating him helps to quell some of that lunacy, as he remembers himself and what he's lost in this pursuit of freedom (his totally platonic gay furry lover). I mean, he did willingly sacrifice his supposed 'freedom' within his cell to aid us in our journey, which he would surely have no desire to do if he truly believed this to be the life he wants for himself. He must have had a change of heart at some point, and realized just how hollow his freedom truly was.
Now we arrive at the silly ones. As I said earlier, all the sprites from this point onward would probably never be used for any of his in-game dialogue, but I really just wanted to draw more of this goober.
And that's just what he is; a goober. A silly little goober. I think these sprites make a lot more sense to use for Jevil in the present day, rather than the Jevil we encountered down in that cell. Like Spamton, he kind of just hangs out in Kris's pocket these days, and only shows up for the gambling during our fight with Tenna, which I find hilarious.
But yeah, I really just leaned hard into the fanon designs of him as a scrungly little imp baby, and basically just made his face a circle. Just look at him, he's so friend-shaped!
And finally, the angst. The first two are just the exact same except for the pupils, so not much to say there. That last one though. Jeez. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but that one actually got to me a bit as I was drawing it. He just looks so dang miserable.
Naturally, I only emphasized this further by adding heavier shading on not only his eyes, but also the upper edges of his face, as well as the upturned little wrinkles at the edges of his lips to make it look like he's trying to keep it together and smile as he always does, but is utterly failing. What could he be thinking of, I wonder, that could tear down the facade so completely?
Anyway, thank you so much for checking out this little thing I made! I haven't the faintest as to what else I'll post on here, but I'll probably do something like this again at some point. At least, after I've mentally recovered from Chapter 5. I'm not ready. I've never been more ready.
If you want to use these for whatever reason, please ask for permission first! I'll probably say yes, but still!
