meeting him for coffee was probably the very least she could do for riley all things considered. for the past five years, her guilt gnawed at her. some days it was non - existent and others she felt like she could sob. she’d been doing what was best for riley her entire life and it had been time to do something for her. she just wished that he could see that. with a warm drink curled into her hands, she settled into the seat across from him. surprise brightened her features when he slid a present across the table towards her. “ you didn’t have to get me anything. ” she said, a grin plastered to her lips. he was a college student, after all. he should be saving his money. she look from him to the gift before she began to pull off the paper. within the paper, there was a book. one that made her heart clench, tears sting her eyes, and most importantly : brought back WONDERFUL memories. CHARLOTTE’S WEB. one of her favorite books that she would always read riley at night. she flipped through the familiar pages, smiling down at the pictures. “ thank you, riles. ”
“ funny how people always say that after someone gets them something like they’re going to go and take it back. ” simliar to how their father had always said the same, marking a present from his son as unnecessary, but then, in true jack fashion, proceeded to make riley feel like utter shit for not getting him anything. he succeeded in hiding how much her reaction to receiving the book swelled his heart with an UNTAINTED happiness. he would never be able to pay her back for the years she’d given to him and his brother, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t try. “ for the dollar that it cost me, you’re welcome. ” he rocked back on his chair, a smile from ear to ear as he pondered his next words. “ you’re especially welcome as i know you’ve arranged for me to shoot with some top, sun-kissed californian photographer, right ? ” there is a playfulness in his tone and his eyebrows raised as far as they could reach.
