McCree realizing he's in love with fem!reader. đ Headcanons are fine for this I don't mindđ thank you!
He hadnât expected it to happen so suddenly, and for it to come from you, no less.
Clutching the side of his abdomen, he gritted his teeth at the taste of iron that was far too recurring for his tastes. Every few seconds he was forced to gulp down the traces of blood that left such a terrible mark on his mouth, and it only grew worse with the fire that seemed to fill his lungs.
Combined with the sight of you covering him in such a battered state, everything felt like a rush. Brown eyes quickly looked to the ground around him, his revolver leaning against his right leg and six bullet shells littering the ground near.
He was used to the field, used to fighting, used to close calls and used to unconventional means, but not used to what you did.
You were were a non-combatant, he was sure of. Werenât you?
Smearing the bloodied nose he had with his glove, the ringing noise slowly ebbed away the longer he kept his vision ahead and with the time that passed. Looking in front of him, there you were, feet and body still while your arm lowered from the near impossible shot you just took.
As you held your pistol firmly in your hand, he weakly tried to force himself to stand at the opponent in front of you both.
McCree was confident. Or, in this case, too arrogant in not taking both the enemy sniper seriously foot soldier. He was an excellent marksman and prided his sense of shot-calling, prediction and accuracy. Unfortunately for him, he hadnât respected the enemy forces enough, and that lack of respect resulted in his injuries. Their abilities proved far more fearsome than he wanted to acknowledge.
But this â you just completely hit him at his pride.
Had you not intervened just then, had you not covered him at his blind spots with the ambush, he wouldâve been dead.
The assassin fell from the position they were previously perched on, their corpse like a ragdoll as you exhaled. You were quick to view your surroundings before returning to McCree. The foot soldier soon toppled over at your right, your shot to their skull taking them out immediately.
Your stance, your readiness, your quickness â it took him entirely by surprise. You werenât the most timid, but also not the most forward, so when you took out the sniper in less than what McCree couldâve thought in seconds, it made him unsure of what to say.
âMcCree? Are you alright?â you asked kneeling down and taking out a makeshift health kit, and removing strands of hair from your face. âItâll be a second before Fio comes to pick us up.â
He didnât say anything, only stare at you using makeshift gauze to fix him up and cloth to halt the bleeding. You seemed unfazed â unmoved by the fact that you took out the assigned target with ease, in addition to an unidentified soldier, and with such a simple weapon as your standard pistol (albeit upgraded.) Either you were more deadly than he ever thought, or he was in over his head.
He prayed it was the former.
He had a dislocated shoulder, bruised arm and bullet wound in his lower abdomen. How he was able to move with how fresh most of his injuries were, he didnât know, and frankly didnât care. He just had to understand how all of that happened so quickly, and with such ease on your end.
To get to those answers, he needed to find you. So as he approached the receptionist area and immediately glanced at you typing away at your keyboard, he knew you would help him understand.
âMcCree?â you spun around in your chair and looked at him, eyes widened and voice hitched. âWhat on earth are you doing here? You need to be resting in the medical bay!â
âIâm fine,â he failed to convince you with how dismissive he was of his own health, âIâm more worried about you. Whatâ? What happened back there?â
âMe? Why?â you asked, standing up and excusing yourself from your desk. You motioned for the cowboy to follow you into the hallway and back towards the medic bay, others glancing at how hurriedly you departed.
âI didnât know you were a sharp shot,â he said in a tone that was a mix of both surprise and bitterness, but tried to mask the latter, âsince when could you shoot like that?â
He had only seen you shoot a few times some months back, and it wasnât anything to note. But now, after your past mission, he was more confused than he had ever been.
âYou think I can be one of Captain Amariâs agents without knowing how to shoot?â you questioned with a tint a challenge in your tone, âShe wouldnât let down my training, no matter how many times I begged. I had to be ready for anything. Plus,â you continued, âyou know all recruits â regardless of Overwatch or Blackwatch â have to have basic training, right?â
âYeah, yeah, I get that, butââ he looked over your figure and tried to think of something quickly to say, anything, ââyour reaction time, howââ
âMcCree, youâre my teammate. I wouldnât have anything happen to you, or anyone if I could,â you admitted, smiling and soon opening the door to an empty room, âand I couldnât come back here knowing I let you and the others down if I missed those shots.â
He sat down in one of the chairs, watching as you removed both your weapon and its magazine to show him. Allowing you to continue, he winced slightly at the throbbing in his stomach but kept himself focused on your words.
âTrue, this pistol in particular doesnât travel too far and thus has limited range. Is pretty weak, even. But I have very fast reflexes, and have always been one to have a keen eye.â
The more you went into detail, he tried his best to deduce any possible indication or enhancement you may have had that would make sense as to why your shots were so seemingly perfect. You had fast reflexes, and a sharp eye. Was that why they kept your around? Or was this perhaps something he just never took the time to recognize?
He shook his head, ignoring the pain in his arm. âI just woulda never thought youâd take out enemies like that so quick.â
âYouâre not the only sharp-shooter around here, Jesse,â you laughed, watching as agents passed by in the hallway outside of the room, âbut with all that said and done, youâre going back to the medbay. I canât believe you left recovery just to ask me that.â
His lidded eyes carefully viewed how your mouth turned upwards into a smile, and then to full-on laughter. A certain warmth filled his chest, making him press his hat down to cover his eyes only slightly.
âWell. Colour me impressed.â
