hotd things that didn't belong in that giant post:
laera has a dog that travels with her. why? bc common in both stony shore and sea dragon point, the crews have water dogs on their ships that assist with various tasks, like net retrieval. on top of being working dogs, they're also trained to be attack dogs which helps considerably when their shores are raided. laera's dog didn't belong to her or her mother, but after the most recent raid, when her owner died, laera offered to take care of the dog. she didn't expect (or want) the dog to travel with her, but the dog goes where it wills;
within house mormont, it is known jerrin is laera's father, but never openly acknowledged. particularly, when he married, it was the singular point of contention between himself, his house, his wife, and his wife's family. acknowledging laera at the sea-spear ceremony, in addition to gifting her his sword, was seen as disrespectful, especially bc jerrin refused to have children. the aftermath was jerrin's marriage ending and his (unofficial) removal from the house. some months after laera departed the north, jerrin willingly left bear island in an attempt to reconnect with gillian and laera. it took a few months for jerrin to whittle down gillian... eventually, they rekindle their relationship, and while they don't marry, it is agreed upon they will live together and wait for their daughter to return;
it's speculated that ironborn prisoners on the clawing coast integrated into and influenced the local culture. while seafaring is not inherently ironborn, there are whispers of iron islander influences in both regions;
there's a weirwood tree in the courtyard of sea dragon point, and the old gods are worshipped and revered like much of the north. the clawing coast also keep the traditions of the first men alive, such as rune carving. their boats are often inscribed with the runic language of the first men;
the clawing coast is not governed by any lord. they are effectively lordless. needless to say, they are loyal to house stark, and if called upon, will send their warriors to fight. house mormont and house ryswell bookend the clawing coast, and each respective town has a generally good relationship with each;
there was a time when sea dragon point and stony shore were at war with each other;
fighters are often shared between the twin towns when the need arises, and also, if needed, will be sent to bear island to repel invasion.
THEY SAY THOSE NORTHMEN ARE A SAVAGE FOLK, AND THAT THEIR WOODS ARE FULL OF WOLVES —
on the clawing coast — the western region of the north where the sunset sea meets land — the twin towns of sea dragon point and stony shore draw a majority of their wealth from the ocean. both have harbours with modest ports and serve as docking points on the clawing coast for vessels that either wish to go north towards bear island, or further south into blazewater bay.
the regions, while sharing a similar seafaring culture and equally proud of their northern heritage, have produced distinctly differing peoples. sea dragon point, which touches the edge of the wolfswood, produces both hearty sailors and keen hunters. stony shore, in its relationship to the rills, have skilled agriculturalists and livestock breeders, with wooly sheep being something of a specialty of theirs.
the towns along the clawing coast have a good relationship with house mormont of bear island, and this has allowed for longstanding trade agreements, unrestricted travel, and fighters, should the need arise.
both towns, in their histories, have been victims of ironborn raiding parties and free folk attacks. sea dragon point often receiving the worst end of it, but out of necessity, the twin towns, with the help of the warriors from bear island, have bred stout and fearless warriors of their own. defending their home is as much in their blood as the sea.
laera snow is the bastard daughter of jerrin mormont, the second son of the current lord. it is said that her mother, gillian, and jerrin were young lovers, having met after beating back a raiding party of ironborn off the coast of bear island. they were in love, but before obligation could take jerrin from gillian, they bore a daughter. it is said that jerrin attempted to make gillian a noblewoman, but she would have none of it. she herself was not a woman of riches, and had no desire to be; she was coarse like the waves in the sea, and wild like the wolves in the wolfswood. gillian would be no one's lady. the contention between them over their futures came to split them; gillian was fine with raising laera alone, but jerrin, being a man of honour, wanted his family on bear island. as her mother tells it, it was the last time the two of them spoke. it is also said that jerrin did marry, but never sired anymore children out of the love he held for his first loves.
gillian raised laera alone and true to her northern heritage. she was a daughter of the north, with sea salt in her blood, snow in her hair, and iron for bones. like her mother, she was raised in the traditions of the warriors of the point, a sea-spear. the name was given in honour of the old ways, when fisherman speared fish and whales on their meagre fishing vessels. like all people who called sea dragon point their home, they were expected to fight and defend it from raiders; laera fancied the sword and shield. when there was no fighting to be had, laera worked alongside her mother in a harbourside tavern. it was never kept a secret who laera's father was, at least among the two of them.
the event that catapulted laera to notoriety in her humble town was the defense of it from an ironborn attack. she, along with a group of other sea-spears assisted in defending the point. rallying fighters; leading waves of attacks; defending weak points; bringing citizens to safety. the battle was particularly bloody; both devastating and violent. by the time sizeable reinforcements from bear island and stony shore arrived, the ironborn had been wiped out. for their efforts, the sea-spears, including laera, were honoured in ceremony on bear island. their boon was receiving one item of their choosing, if it could be given. laera asked for a sword, and it was her estranged father, jerrin, who gave her his. laera returned to sea dragon point, and after convalescing, indulged her restless spirit and set out to explore the lands beyond the north.
laera is beholden to the smallfolk of westeros, finding no fealty to the noblemen who may at times cause their suffering. she will aid them where she can, often in exchange for money. for lack of a better word, she is essentially a mercenary. her morals are grey at best, and there is an inherent level of criminality to her. king's landing is sort of a homebase for her, where she picks up work that will lead her out of the city; from there, she will travel wherever she's able to find work.
house of the dragon: despite the close relationship the people of sea dragon point may have had with house mormont, this proximity to nobility is not one she seeks elsewhere. she is untrusting of nobles, and will rarely offer her services honestly unless in particularly dire straits. her upbringing has made her shrewd, inflexible, and cunning which has allowed her to survive as long as she has.
by default, she is team black, but if honest consideration is given to the needs of the smallfolk, and an effort is made to earn their favour ( and hers, frankly ) and maintain their safety, she will side with whomever.
team black — laera is in king's landing during the time the gullet is blockaded. work is scarce, and she's starving. when rhaenyra sends food into blackwater bay, it's the first instance where she makes note of something of benefit at the hands of a noble. later on, when the call is set out by rhaenyra during the events of the red sowing, laera goes to dragonstone — not with the intent to claim a dragon, but to meet the woman herself, out of curiosity.
she is horrified by what transpires on dragonstone. as she wasn't in the chamber at the time of the red sowing, her attempt to flee back to king's landing is halted by the queen's guard. it's the chance laera has to meet rhaenyra face to face, and despite being terrified of meeting a similar fate, their following conversation plants minor interest in her cause. she leaves, and some days later, returns to dragonstone to seek employment under rhaenyra, provided she keep to her word of bettering king's landing ( and to a lesser extent, the realm. again, for the smallfolk! ) under her rule.
team green — siding with team green is a similar affair. she comes and goes out of king's landing regularly and after the death of jaeherys, she's locked into the city. in her criminal dealings, it's possible for her to put into contact with larys through a long string of contacts. through him, she may be exposed to the rest of the green faction. her motivations are similar, in that she will serve the crown ( unofficially, titles are something she couldn't care less about ) if the smallfolk are kept in mind.
regardless of what faction she sides with, laera will be asset in that she has traveled westeros and lives in the depths of king's landing. she is very aware of the problems she faces, and what others face, and it's important to her that the issues causing these problems are addressed. she can offer personal insight and act like a go between if allowed. she's also very skilled with a sword and can serve as a swordarm.
asoiaf laera doesn't wear steel armour. SHE'S TOO POOR FOR THAT. and being a Proper Northerner, still sticks to her roots of wearing gambesons, doublets, and leather.
i've never ported anything over to bg3 - this was my first time. :) i remember seeing syanna's outfit in the witcher 3 and was like "wow, this would be perfect for laera!" and actually based her under armour off of the outfit... so, FINALLY i have done the Thing and made her outfit in bg3 <3
needless to say, this IS her canon outfit!!! i'm so pleased with how everything turned out.
laughing bc astarion has a -1 str score and how in the HELL can he pick laera up?? who, out of reflex, will at first refuse to be moved, and probably also weighs more than him? 😭
needless to say, laera's str score at lvl12 is +5 and at lvl20 including buffs from her gear is maaaybe a 23 or 24? she's strong. ALL THAT TO SAY... she will pick her partners up. 🩵
