Progress has been great on the walnut bookcase, and I’ve just wrapped up the first finishing stage: pre-assembly, since it’s devilishly hard to sand & finish inside corners well. The joint surfaces have been masked keep the wood clean for glue. Tomorrow, when this 3rd coat (1 shellac sealer, 2 oil/urethane) has dried, I’ll remove the tape & glue the parts together, followed by another couple more coats of oil. Finished up the joinery on this low bookcase. Through mortises chopped by hand, tenons mostly by table saw. Next comes some fussing over the details, sanding, glue-up and finally the fun of seeing how the wood glows with finish on it. Having a good time making a wide variation on my Small Open Bookcase. I was lucky to find rough walnut I could mill to 7/8”, thicker than I usually use for this design. With 48” shelves this one could use the stiffness. Rather than modify the router template I always use for these I decided to cut the mortises in the sides by hand. Through mortises require precise layout (yes, I consider a utility knife “precise”), and working from both sides to prevent tearout. For a gauge I ripped an offcut from the planed shelves to the tenon size. When it gets worn I just saw off the dented end. Time to ship some stuff. I’m happy with this recent work, and exited to get going on the next project(s). It’s going to be a sprint to December! (at Oakland, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5HvAqIB49o/?igshid=qko6qhdlm7aa
Come spend a day at @TheCrucible with me next month (Sun 12/15) making simple wooden toys. We’ll use hand tools and a few of the machines in the studio to craft long-lasting toys with food-safe finishes. No experience necessary! Two more new cherry crates, ready to send off with the new console top I’ve just completed. (at Oakland, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B45QDGRhJXq/?igshid=1lpr0bay1k6wg
It’s so satisfying to do a fast home project: whipped up a clothing rack over the weekend. Sketches with Saturday morning tea, followed by shopping for lumber, milling & cutting joints, and assembled in place by Sunday afternoon. Just finishing up yet another new version if the console box top. This time mixing the dovetailed construction with a wirecloth panel. (at Oakland, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4ixb1Nl-lI/?igshid=ttzj3q9fjrzg
My Small Open Bookcase works great mounted on a wall. Shown next to its big sibling, at seven feet tall. I’ve been making versions of this design for years, the first few of which lived on walls. The bigger one shows nicely how the cherry can age in the sunlight. (at Emeryville, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4dJxKfBCsn/?igshid=o5dswyzhv4wf
Plans & cutting list for another customized Open Bookcase. This one will be wide & short, and made of Walnut. (at Oakland, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4DIR65hX7D/?igshid=sjynh03fi7l4
The view of the meadow & and the mountain, again. (at Marlborough, New Hampshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3nMOzshuHq/?igshid=14c741fx6qj5a
Having a peaceful break at my mom’s place in New Hampshire. Brilliantly-turning leaves give a foreground to Mt #Monadnock in the background, and in the foreground the birdbath has been knocked over again by a visiting local bear (found its scat down the meadow). Exciting to see my Walnut X-Table in the “big room” of the 33rd Annual Emeryville Festival of the Arts. Stop by the gallery at 1375 55th St and check it out along with a wide array of art by other local creators.
