DOCTOR WHO S01E8 "Empire of Death"
it's been hours and I still hate it so much.
that was cheap and unearned and empty. both actors deserved so much better.
and it's not even really possible to grieve it or fix it with fic or AU ideas in a way that feels satisfying, because what Jemma said in that interview is absolutely right - they weren't in the same place in their lives and it wasn't going to be a forever thing. and the argument they were having beforehand was a really shitty, unkind reminder of that which served no purpose other than to make Kate utterly miserable in a way that exceeded any narrative necessity.
also, it's deeply implausible that her head of security who has shown himself to be extremely cautious and responsible throughout his time on the show(s) would let her walk around in her apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows during a time of heightened security. never mind on a day when she was deliberately shut out of a meeting with major stakeholders under sketchy circumstances. it's absurd that he would encourage her go to a second location. especially when that second location is a waterfront high rise. but if he did, at absolute minimum he would insist on drawing the curtains shut before letting her enter the room. like it's bad enough to develop his character so poorly in terms of his interpersonal interactions with her. but cautious security guy is HIS WHOLE THING. it's his job, a.k.a. the only part of his character that has ever been clearly developed. but for the sake of storytelling, just kidding, we've now decided that he lacks the ability to perform a basic threat assessment and doesn't realize something bad might happen until there's literally a laser sight trained on someone 3 feet away from him.
also, the fact that despite appearing terrified of losing him, after 5 seconds of him losing consciousness and being still she was comfortable making the assessment that he was definitely absolutely 100% gone with no chance of life-saving intervention.
no character who's trying not to lose someone they love comes to that conclusion immediately.
despite being played by Jemma Redgrave, Kate is not qualified to make a medical assessment of someone with a highly specific traumatic injury in 5 seconds, and she knows that.
even if she could draw a conclusion that quickly, she works around all kinds of alien tech that could skew the odds in his favor.
idk man. it's such lazy writing.

The relationships Edward has with both Ellen and Adelaide are quite interesting. Not just because of the different dynamics but also the different portrayal of love? Maybe I’m full on delulu mode but while Edward claims for Ellen to be his true love I think his actions towards Adelaide seem far more loving? Maybe it’s a romantic, sexual love vs platonic love situation. But I feel more chemistry and love when I watch him being flustered in Dodo’s presence –them both being so awkward– than him knocking on Ellen’s door, kissing and loving her. He seems more relaxed around Ellen but more natural with Adelaide? I know it probably doesn’t make much sense claiming him being more natural around a woman he acts so awkward with but I can’t explain it well, they’re both so awkward in their words and yet it’s so charming and works perfectly well. They’re just so awkwardly charming, charming awkward. Like the scene where they’re visiting one of the Guinness’ estates and he offers her a bordeaux from her birth year. Edward grows uneasy with her reaction, thinking he truly offended her with his choice, seemingly falling deeper with his choice of meal … Adelaide even says that they’re not good with talking without a cause and yet it still works so well?
I think within the two women he somehow found his equals, and yet he claims he only truly loves one. So, again, maybe I’m just fully delusional but maybe he doesn’t realise the weight of his feelings for Adelaide yet – or it’s just all platonic. But all the small gestures, the water bottle in the carriage on the way to the wedding? And what does Ellen get? Her brother shipped to the us … save, but still … besides the political influences it feels more like Edward benefiting of her.

Helen. This is not fair. It's not exactly like you've been forthcoming about everything in your life.
