âAh well.â Ellis said, shrugging and fixing her hair, âI suppose I can whip something up. Maybe be a suitable substitute.â She eyed his smile loving every bit of it. He did have a temper, but Cain also had his sweet side. It was rare, but it showed. If only that side could be seen more, how different things might be. Each moment she got him to smile was one less he spent angry and fighting.Â
Of course, they returned to talking about work, and Ellisâs smile became a bit forced. She knew Cain was skilled at his âjobsâ and that giving him some sort of release for his rage was good, but all the same she worried about him. Maybe it was feeding things instead of releasing them, or what would happen when things finally decided to go wrong? When his luck or intimidation ran out and someone finally decided to hurt him?
Ellis looked about the place, taking a brief moment to sit down across from him and reaching out for his hand. âCain⊠If you need some money IâŠI have some saved and my rentâs all paid up if you need somewhere to stay. I just donât want you hurt. Those sort of things could go wrong, and if they do or you make the wrong sort of enemies⊠Iâm afraid of you not coming back.â Ellis bit her lip, âIâm already worried you wonât, but something like the mafia? That sounds big-time.â Of course, nothing she said would change his mind. This was Cain. She knew he would do whatever he wanted anyway, and thatâs how it had always been. His rage was likely even boiling up at being told ânoâ or that it wasnât a good idea. Ellisâ eyes looked down and she drew out a shy grin, âBut⊠It is up to you. I canât talk you out of it if youâre already thinking of it, but I can ask you to be careful.â
Sadly, her attempt at keeping his temper even was all for naught as one of the new patrons of the establishment seemed to be eyeing them over with curiosity. Even she noticed him snooping in, and as his mouth opened, Ellis knew it was over. âOh get a room you two. Youâre sappy little story is giving me a toothache.â She wished she could have turned invisible right then and there, or made him become invisible through sheer will.
Cain wanted to be happy about Ellis holding his hand but he could also tell that she was no longer being playful. She was somber and serious; his face fell in response. "Stop worrying about that," Cain said in a hushed but forceful voice. He hit the table with his free hand, but quickly pushed back his hair as if to compose himself. "I know what I'm doing and I've been doing forever, so just trust me. Iâm not going anywhere." He tried not to get riled up at her but he was a little unhappy that she didn't think he could handle a larger gig. Or maybe she was just caring and worrying, but Cain still felt she wasn't trusting in his skill. âAnd donât offer your money again, okay? You worked for that. Hard. He squeezed her hand a little tighter but not in a mean way; just to show her that he really meant what he was saying. âItâs not your job to take care of me; I should be-â
Cain noticed Ellisâ eyes flicker over and at the same moment the man beside them spoke up. Cain was not happy at being cut off twice in the same night, but, seeing the embarrassment on Ellisâ face is what sent him over. âOh, is that what you have? A toothache?â Cain let go of Ellisâ hand and pushed his chair back as he stood up. He walked slowly over to the sitting man, feigning calmness. âWhereâs it hurt, huh? Here?â Cain grabbed the man by the hair and slammed his face into the table. The room slowly fell quietly at the sound of the thud.âH-Hey,! Stop , I-I-Iâm so-â Cain hit him into the table again. âNot good to be cut off, huh? What, you couldnât hear we were having a goddamn conversation?!â
