As a child(I’ve mentioned this a few times, but I’m going to make it official now), May was really extremely shy; and had difficulty making friends. She preferred to sit by herself, and read the miraculous adventure stories of famous Pokemon heroes—never once thinking she’d be on herself. She was not very social at all. However, she grew accustomed to getting in athletic activities, mostly ones that only really required one person—surfing, skating, martial arts etc. But soon enough, upon moving to Littleroot, this little childhood dilemma of hers was solved when Brendan and Wally quickly and willingly became friends with her; and May quickly grew courage.
Secondly, as a kid, May spent a lot of time with her father(when he was home, that is—Norman is actually a pretty popular trainer and loves to leave on journeys). She learned most of her Pokemon information from him, while most young kids would probably go to a school. However, his teaching was more travel efficient, and May was quickly prepared for her travels; which was probably why they let her leave without THAT much worry. Also, when Norman got the job as Gym Leader in Petalburg, May found out that they would be moving to Littleroot; where a friend of Norman lives, with a kid about the same age as her. This ‘friend’ was Professor Birch. Silently, she was excited. May had heard about him, and that he was a Professor that gave select trainers their first Pokemon. So before they moved, she tried to get as much learning in as she possibly could.
