hawke,  as  of  inquisition,  has  naught  left  of  the  family  she  begun  with.  family  has  always  been  her  grounding  point,  a  salvation  and  reassuring  shoulder  to  a  girl  so  often  pulled  in  too  many  directions.  before  his  death,  hawke  adored  malcolm hawke,  if  disagreed  with  his  sheltering  of  bethany.  before  her  death,  leandra  was  a  calm  and  adoring  shoulder  to  cry  on.  carver  was,  for  all  his  brash  nature,  was  her  greatest  competition,  and  in  being  so,  was  her  greatest  confidante.  and  bethany  was  her  chosen  object  to  protect     (  until,  that  is,  that  object  decided  to  protect  itself  ).  

when  much  of  her  family  is  either  dead  or  far  away,  hawke  finds  family  ---  her  friends  turned  into  a  surrogate  kinship  that  she  desperately  needs.  Hawke  needs  to  be  grounded,  needs  an  anchor  to  her  wily  need  to  help.  So  when  her  blood  is  gone,  her  found  family  is  of  utmost  importance                     (  and  it  is,  as  always,  her  nature  to  lose  them  too  )

as  for  favorite  childhood  memories,  hawke  has  many,  but  when  looking  back  at  them  with  older  eyes,  they  feel  almost  empty  in  comparison  to  the  happiness  she  found  in  kirkwall  (  putting  all  of  her  suffering  aside  ).  every  one  of  hawke’s  treasured  memories  belongs  to  her  siblings,  to  play  fights  with  carver,  to  allowing  bethany,  in  her  sheltered  life,  to  display  and  show  off  the  magic  she  so  dearly  coveted.  hawke  adores  her  siblings,  the  only  grounding  objects  in  the  life  a  young  woman  drawn  so  horribly  to  steel  and  war,  to  the  smell  of  ostagar,  to  king  cailan’s  army  ---  who  lost  herself  often  in  daydreams  of  running  away.  hawke,  when  asked,  will  always  answer  that  her  greatest  memory  of  her  childhood  was  very  simple  ;  just  being  with  her  siblings.            something  she  can  no  longer  do.

Not  a  day  goes  by  during  which  hawke  doesn’t  think  about  bethany  ;  doesn’t,  in  her  sleep,  dream  of  dark,  disgured  features,  of  the  t  a  i  n  t  in  her  skin  ---  of  leaving  her  behind.  she’s  as  good  as  dead,  they’d  all  said,  tugging  the  prey-bird  away  with  screams  in  her  lungs  because  that  couldn’t  be  true.  bethany  was  too  strong  to  let  the  blight  get  the  best  of  her  !!  they’d  outrun  it  before  !!  but  there  was  nothing  to  be  done.  nothing  to  be  done,  of  course…  except,  she  wonders,  every  single  day,  if  there  might  have  been.  wonders  if  she  could  have  carried  the  burden  her  sister  had  become  on  her  back,  up  to  the  surface  ---  expose  the  illness  overtaking  her  to  the  populace  of  kirkwall  …  but, no.           she  couldn’t  have.

that  nary  means  she  doesn’t  wish  that  she  had.  because  hawke  can  be  a  selfish  creature,  for  all  of  her  good  intentions.  but  that’s  all  in  the  past,  a  blight  on  her  history  she  can’t  escape  even  in  sleep.  varric  has  tried  to  distract  her  from  skyhold  ---  sent  her,  as  he  often  does,  on  a  little  task.  to  look  into  something  fishy,  something  uncanny.  that  was,  after  all,  her  forte.  someone’s  slaughtering  demons  in  droves  ---  and  it  isn’t  the  inquisitor.  best  take  a  look,  they’d  said.  so,  they  sent  the  hawk  with  nothing  better  to  do.

killian  hates  travelling  alone,  for  all  that  she’s  been  doing  it  for  the  past  year.  still  isn’t  used  to  the  eerie  silence,  but  has  become  quite  good  at  using  it  to  her  advantage.  it’s  the  silence  that  has  her  on  high  alert,  the  subtle  noise  of  death  on  the  near  horizon  ---  a  shriek  and  a  simpering  wail,  a  horrifying  noise  unlike  any  other,  that  has  her  hurrying  to  the  source  of  the  chaos.              and  it  is  chaos,  when  she  finds  it,  a  small  stretch  of  settlement  covered  in  corpses  and  smothered  in  the  stench  of  demon  blood.  and  although  the  act  is  in  itself  a  benefit  to  her,  she  worries  about  the  source  of  power  to  do  such  a  thing  --  and  so  quickly.  her  steps,  silent  as  a  wolf,  stalk  towards  a  small  cabin,  her  voice  steady,  calm,  and  commanding  as  it  has  alway  been.    “  show  yourself.  ”                                         @blightfed​

she  stares  down  the  slant  of  the  steep,  treacherous  looking  hill  with  eagle-eyed  intensity,  unwavering  and  barely  blinking.  it’s  how  hawks  track  prey,  how  beasts  watch  a  weak  thing  to  e  a  t  ;  and  yet,  what  she’s  looking  at  coudn’t  be  farther  from.  it  was,  in  fact,  one  of  the  mightiest  beasts  there  could  be  to  tackle,  a  great  and  lumbering  DRAGON  sat  quite  terrifyingly  just  a  way’s  off  from  their  location.  it’s  breaths  fall  in  laboured,  fiery  puffs  along  the  sand,  eyes  roaming  the  area  for  a  free  and  easy  meal  ;  just  as  hawke  watches  it.  she’s  always  held  a  strange  and  corruptible  curiosity  for  the  creatures,  and  when  presented  with  the  chance  ---  she  looks  to  her  companion  (  inquisitor,  elf,  aisling  )  and  has  developed  a  look  of  pure,  unadulterated  excitement.  something  the  inquisitor  is  sure  not  to  have  seen  from  the  champion  before.    “  could  we  ?  ”                              @arlathanlost​
