Maya’s eyesbegan to sparkle the kind of twinkle she only ever got around her riles. Herbest friends need to give everyone a warm welcome… If Riley’s insides were ashop, she could never turn to the sign from “Open” to “Closed” on the door toher heart. Maya was certain of that. Howshe sometimes wished late at night, that heart could be hers alone.
Maya’s eyesbegan to grow wide, as she realized her mind was wondering to… silly, stupid, unrealistic expectations thoughts. Did Riley notice she had spaced out? It didn’t matterreally. Getting up from her comfysprawled out position on her chair, she motioned Riley to follow her with acrook of her fingertip. “You need to relax Riles. Take a break, let me get yousome ice cream.” It felt really good to say that. Just to invite her to the cafeteriafor something simple felt good, when Riley had constantly spoiled her for yearson end. Yeah, her part time job at “Shampoo Paws” had its perks. Even if Itwasn’t her first choice of jobs, she was warming up to it.
“Okay,” Riley nodded, “yeah.” She was still lost in thought the stock photos of smiling students terrifying her. “Let’s do that.” She pulled all of her papers off the table and into the front pocket of the pretentious Kanken bag she had insisted on the ninth grade. It was a soft purple, just like all of her school supplies.
Riley stood up, tucking in her chair. She grabbed the few stray books she had left on the table, smiling at Maya. “So, we haven’t talked since last night. Did your whole life change since?” She picked up her snack container, the stack in her arms reaching her chin.
