Embracing cultural diversity in the workplace is important for internationally competitive businesses. Read about what we found to be the biggest benefits and most pressing issues.
Managing diversity in organizations is one of the defining issues of our time. Most institutions try to promote the creation of a diverse, creative workforce, but unfortunately, even after several decades of work, how this is created is still very unclear. A more scientific approach is needed.
Why not
The purpose of this blog is to make you understand why cultural diversity is crucial within the workplace. Besides that, it will also explore the benefits and challenges associated with this topic.
It is important to have multiple cultures surrounding you at work as it gives you a broader perspective and understanding on the task you do. In an article by HULT BLOGS they state that one benefit to cultural diversity is that a more diverse team are more productive and perform better (HULT BLOGS,2019).
Furthermore, being more diverse as a company gives you more talented individuals but just gathering different cultures together does not always means success. An example comes from an article from Forbes which talks about how other places have tried to copy “Norway's approach to boardroom diversity” which came out unsuccessful as the Norwegian social ground work is unique to themselves and following behind them will not bring the same results that they have gotten by diversifying their business (Forbes,2018). Diversity is important but just implementing it into a fixed plan will do worse than good, but as a whole this subject must be incorporated into every business as it improves productivity, allows for more revenue and it can lessen the workload for individuals. When working with different cultures, you have the advantage of seeing through their perspective becoming more creative and innovated in the workplace. But, when it comes to different working styles, it can leave people nervous about working the way they feel comfortable due to the way their teammates may act towards them. Workplace diversity has both sides to a coin. There are some challenges to the subject. Having diversity leaves room for conflict in culture and religious beliefs. Different religions have different religious holidays that deserve a day off. This can cause a lack of workers at a workplace leaving more stress on co-workers and managers. In order for companies and businesses to thrive and reach new levels they must come to the consensus that cultural diversity is essential within the workplace.
