Hey, it's me again, peeps! Since I don't possess the talent to write a full-blown fic, here's another FengQing headcanon that has been living rent-free in my mind.
I genuinely feel like when Mu Qing and Feng Xin first met as teenagers, there was curiosity between them. They're both around the same age, both serving Xie Lian, and I can't convince myself that they never wanted to know the other beyond the constant arguments. But they were young, hot-headed, and each had their own priorities. Instead of trying to understand one another, they kept clashing.
Then the war happened.Mu Qing left, resentment grew, and they spent centuries blaming each other for everything that went wrong. By the time Xie Lian's third ascension happens, they're so used to being enemies that neither of them really knows how to be anything else.
But I think everything starts changing after Jun Wu's identity is revealed.Xie Lian and Mu Qing finally clear the air. Then comes that scene my absolute favorite FengQing canon moment where Mu Qing is about to sacrifice himself and Feng Xin doesn't even hesitate. He just jumps in to save him. That scene honestly altered my brain chemistry.
I imagine that after everything settles down, they both keep thinking about it. Mu Qing can't stop wondering why Feng Xin would risk his life for him without even pausing to think. And Feng Xin... I think it's only afterward that the realization hits him: I almost lost Mu Qing.
From there, I like to imagine they slowly become... softer. Not dramatically. They're still Feng Xin and Mu Qing. They still bicker over the smallest things because that's basically their love language at this point lol. But now they'll ask if the other made it back safely after missions. Sometimes they'll have tea together(heavenly gossip in Feng Xin's words ) or they'll visit Xie Lian at Puqi Shrine together because somehow it just becomes routine. It's never acknowledged. It just... happens. Then one day they're sent on what should've been an easy mission.Except it isn't.The enemy is far stronger than expected. They're both injured and have already called for backup when the demon attacks again.Mu Qing has injured his leg, so he's just a fraction too slow. And because Feng Xin is, well... Feng Xin... He shoves Mu Qing out of the way and takes the strike himself. The blade goes straight through his chest. He collapses. For a split second, Mu Qing freezes.Seeing Feng Xin lying motionless absolutely terrifies him, but there's no time. The demon is heading toward a nearby village, and Mu Qing forces himself to keep fighting. He's exhausted, nearly out of spiritual power, but something just... snaps. It's fear...It's rage... It's the thought that Feng Xin might actually die.He cuts the demon down with a force that even surprises himself. The moment it's over, he drops Zhanmadao without a second thought and runs back to Feng Xin.There's blood everywhere.Feng Xin's spiritual power is dangerously low.Mu Qing's own reserves are almost gone, but he pours what little he has left into Feng Xin anyway. He's whispering prayers under his breath, over and over, begging him to hold on.He's holding him so tightly that he doesn't even notice Feng Xin stirring. Then he hears a weak cough."...You're hugging me so hard," Feng Xin wheezes, "I'm gonna choke to death before I bleed to death."
Trust Feng Xin to crack a joke while literally skewered.Mu Qing loosens his grip just a little but refuses to let go.When Feng Xin doesn't get the usual sarcastic comeback, he finally realizes something is wrong.Mu Qing is shaking. At first he thinks it's from exhaustion. Then he notices his robes growing damp. Not from blood. From tears. And honestly... Mu Qing doesnt cry easily. He's spent centuries swallowing every emotion before anyone else can see it. But this? This completely breaks him.Feng Xin gently cups his face, only for Mu Qing to stubbornly hide against his shoulder instead. When he finally looks up, his eyes are red, swollen, and desperately trying not to spill over again.Feng Xin's heart absolutely shatters.
So, naturally...He squishes Mu Qing's cheeks."I'm okay," he says softly.
"Don't make that face."Mu Qing buries his face into Feng Xin's neck again and mutters, "You stupid oaf."
Feng Xin just laughs, wraps both arms around him, and presses the quickest kiss against his temple.Meanwhile... ...Xie Lian and Pei Ming had arrived a few minutes ealier . They stop dead in their tracks to see this whole exchangewith bated breath.
Xie Lian is simply relieved that both of his friends are alive.
Pei Ming? and his favoritedialog "...Ho ho....Another successful heavenly matchmaking mission."
(( ≧∀≦)ノP.S. I will never recover from that scene where Feng Xin jumps in front of Mu Qing. It is genuinely my favorite FengQing moment in the novel. Every time I reread it, I find myself trying to visualize exactly how Feng Xin moved, how he caught and held Mu Qing in his arms , what their positions looked like... I've seen beautiful fan art of the scene, but somehow my brain still keeps replaying its own version. That single moment honestly cemented FengQing as one of my favorite ships.)
