How was he not supposed to fall in love with Dean?
I mean that.
You have a genderless millions of years old being who has never known anything but duty. And yes Castiel had companionship with the other angels but it was collective.
Then he had a mission and the mission was to retrieve a righteous man from hell - Castiel succeeded. And that should have been the end of it.
Except that righteous man keeps saying “Hey what are you doing?” Not heaven. You. It’s always YOU from Dean until “I care about you” “Don’t make me lose you” “I prayed to you” “I love you”.
Like we know all about how Castiel rebelled for Dean, that’s textual, and that Dean is good, that is text too.
I don’t think that the fact that no one ever loved Castiel before - not in billions of years - gets harped on hard enough.
How could Castiel not love the first being to ever love him individually?
And to be loved the way Dean loves, suicidally and apocalyptically and all-consumingly? Yeah he had no chance.
YouTube has been serving me videos about the fanfiction to published pipeline. (This is what I get for watching a bookbinding video that used a popular HP fanfiction that was recently published as original fiction.)
I get why people talk about fanfiction as a place to learn craft because you do! You absolutely learn about pacing, dialogue, structure, characterization, revision, audience awareness, and how to finish a full narrative. A lot of writers learn by doing, and fanfiction gives people a low-barrier way to do that.
Hell, I am a much better writer today than I was five years ago and I’m better today than I was even one year ago.
But I hate in these videos that that becomes fanfiction’s value.
Because then the value of fanfiction is still being measured by how close it can get you to “real” fiction. Fanfiction becomes valuable only because it might someday be original fiction. It becomes something you outgrow.
And IMHO that misses the point.
Fanfiction is not valuable because it teaches you how to write original fiction.
Fanfiction is valuable because people love characters and worlds enough to keep talking back to them. Fanfiction is a conversation. It is your interpretation. It is desire, grief, anger, repair, obsession, devotion, and community. It is our way of saying, “This mattered, and we are not done with it.”
It is valuable because it gives us community. People who see the characters in the same and different ways and feel like there’s more to explore or learn.
Sometimes fanfiction is technically excellent. Sometimes it is messy. Sometimes it is indulgent. Sometimes it is better than the canon. Sometimes it is twenty thousand words of two characters finally having the conversation canon denied them (hello all the fic-it fics)! Its value does not depend on whether the writer eventually publishes it as an original work.
I think the “file off the serial numbers” conversation reveals the problem. If a fic can be stripped of names and setting so easily that you can no longer tell what source material it came from, then maybe it was not actually very good fanfiction. Maybe it was original fiction wearing borrowed names.
IMHO good fanfiction leans into the source. It understands the characters, their emotional logic, the absences, the contradictions, the things canon said and the things canon could not or would not say.
I’m not saying fanfiction has to be a copy/paste of canon, but you should be able to recognize the characters. The point is the characters.
That does not mean fanfiction can never become original fiction, because of course it can! Writers transform things. They take skills from one form into another. But “this helped me learn craft” is not the same as “this was only worthwhile because it helped me move on to something legitimate.”
Fanfiction is not lesser.
It does not need to justify itself by becoming something else.
Anyway, I literally wrote a fic called Filing Off the Serial Numbers. It is about fandom, writing, collaboration, AO3, and storytelling. I wrote it because my feelings about fanfiction changed since I was younger.
I love fanfiction because I love the characters and I love the community.
someone hug them, stat!

WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHARKS HAVE BEEN AROUND THE GALAXY TWICE
It’s a very good design
Additionally, they have survived all five of earth’s major mass extinction events.
They, likely, will not survive us, however. Their population has declined, roughly, 70% within the last 50 years due to habitat loss and overfishing.
75% of shark species now qualify as threatened.
Mind the Paradox: A Tourist's Guide to the End of Everything
Ohhh. Mind The Paradox has been my baby for a whiiile:
Herman works as a critic and copywriter for a time-travel holiday company, which means he spends a great deal of his life visiting history and confirming that the past was filthy, dangerous and, with sufficient dishonesty, absolutely worth the money.
Then he gets back from a particularly wretched trip to the 17th century and finds the future almost empty. According to the news, civilisation collapsed yesterday, and most of humanity responded in the calm, measured way people always do in a crisis: by panicking at once, forming a queue, and fleeing into the past.
This leaves Herman, a small handful of people who for one reason or another never left, Tisiphone “Tizzy” Vale, Deputy Director of Continuity for the Ministry of Temporal Affairs — the sort of exhausted, ferociously efficient woman appointed to make sure no one important was left behind — and P.E.R.C.I.V.A.L., Herman’s household assistant AI, housed in an android bird body who is just entirely too pleased about being included.
So the three of them set off through time to discover what caused the panic, where everyone has gone, and whether there is any way of persuading humanity to come back to a future it has already decided to abandon.
“Will you love me just as much when I’m normal?”
“I’ll be insane about you.”
For @fullpriceforlatepizza
i want what they have
Y'all seemed to like Betty Lafitte, so might I propose Barbra Singer next?
“Are you okay here? Being human and here. With me.” The silence stretched, filled, and Dean felt twitchy just sitting in it.

Art made to accompany the fic Deo Gratias by the amazing @xzerosparrowx, as part of the Destiel AU Reverse Big Bang 2025.
You can read the fic on [AO3] and I definitely urge you to read it! Simply beautiful story they wrote inspired by the first original piece, I am absolutely sure you will enjoy this work.
Summary:
In a crisis of faith, Father Castiel calls into the dark to prove himself to God.
A fallen angel answers.
As Castiel spirals beneath the crushing weight of faith, shame, a hunger he cannot name, and the quiet violence of devotion, he is drawn into a dangerous intimacy with that which is most unholy. To be truly seen, heard, and understood is divine.
Wolves are not solitary creatures.
And not every fall is a punishment.
me when I first saw these.
well. I mean. the Road So Far has been so
Medieval AU but it's Cas who's the knight. He's got a weird devotional thing going on with the Count, saved him during a crusade, staring during mass, "I always come when you call", but the moment Dean tries to make half a move Cas immediately fucks off to a random quest that takes him several years, knights of the Round Table style. Every time he comes back he drops Dean one of his kids. Dean genuinely can't tell if Cas swore a vow of celibacy and he's increasingly desperate to find out
Claire in a hennin and a kirtle tells Dean to just arrest Cas on a technicality whenever he comes back and fuck him
Meanwhile the actual plot is about how the Devil is trying to possess the count's brother and bring about the og Apocalypse 1000
Cas brings Dean all the kids, I don't just mean Claire and Jack, I'm talking all the kids. Alex. Kaia. Lucas (the kid from 1x03 bc I love him). He shows up with Lisa and Ben after having rescued them and that's when everyone starts rumoring there's something wrong with the Count bc he doesn't marry her. Baby Amara who's just a regular baby. Just all of them. Jody is the governess and she's increasingly appalled by the fact Cas is effectively giving Dean a (large) family but can't talk about his feelings. (Jody is the cook. Charlie is the handmaiden. Crowley is the king. Bobby is the stables guy. Kevin is the castle priest who has to hear about Dean's gay struggles in confession. Ash is the court alchemist. All the angels are knights. Rowena is exactly herself)
Plot context being the previous Count John Winchester being obsessed with the crusades because they killed his wife, drags them along, Dean gets taken by the Muslims (this is eurocentric, we know) Cas rescues him, 12 years of pining ensue
Dean is surrounded by kids and trying to figure out how to solve the sexual tension, while Sam is trapped in Excalibur type shit, being groomed by Ruby-Morgana into drinking demon blood in the castle dungeons

Summary:
Castiel Milton left his stifling hometown and never looked back. He's far from pleased when he's forced to move the bakery he established there from the middle of town to the outskirts, but when a teenage Jack is left in his care, Castiel hopes they can create their own place in Genesis. Jack settles in nicely, but Castiel isn’t so easily won over.
Dean Winchester grew up on the road, but Genesis has been his home for forty years. He loves this town and the people in it with the passion of a guard dog, and he’s less than thrilled by the threat of the shiny new business next door.

Summary:
Dean Winchester's life has been planned for him since before his birth. As the heir to his father's estate, his dreams are immaterial and, frankly, dangerous. He has long accepted that he will need to put his duties above all else.
While attending to one of those duties, Dean stumbles into a dream-like world and meets Castiel, a beautiful fae lord who has never once denied himself an indulgence. Cas samples desires like a dessert buffet, and Dean is terrified of how much he wants to taste.
