Reflection of ENC 1142

The purpose of this class is to try and connect a person to poetry. That’s part of what it did to me. I personally did not know that this class was originally a poetry class. I soon found out that there is more to poetry than a group of lines cut short that rhyme and stand in the middle of a page. Every line ending has meaning, words don’t have to rhyme, and the ways words are grouped don’t have to be all the way down the middle of a page. This class is also to teach a person how to use resources in order to do research and support an idea or an argument. This major applies to my major because in order to receive my AA I have to first satisfy a research requirement class and this one counted. I personally think the assignments were all connected in that they tied to analyzing poems and then learning how to take those analyzed thoughts and craft poems of our own. These poems use rhetorical devices and techniques that we learned how to analyze from in the first place.

I personally think I did very well in this class. I tried hard to keep up with blogs and only missed one because I was home for the weekend and completely blanked and forgot about it. I made use of the discussion with Ms. Goch because I used her advice to steer me in the right direction when it came to writing my papers. Especially when I wrote my 2nd paper, I had no idea where I was going and going to her is what sorted me out and put me on a valid argument. I turned in all my assignments in on time, except for my one rough draft of our poetry manuscript; I was out of town and just didn’t get to it. I took in what people had to say about my writing in both the writing and poetry workshops and later applied it later and was able to improve. There are a couple of things I could have done better. I would have liked to done more to receive a higher grade on my 2nd paper then an 80%. I think this could be done by finding more credible sources for my support. I had a hard time finding scholarly articles for this paper and that is why I feel like my grade suffered.

I learned a lot this semester and my writing has definitely improved, especially my poetry. I do have a better understanding of how MLA works, especially when it comes to making my works cited page. I know how to properly use sources and how to find sources that are more reliable and support my argument better. I definitely know how to write more creatively and with more images and detail in anything I write about. The multiple revisions also helped me to form a more polished final product and not procrastinate. I learned that if I take my time and follow instructions I can do better on my work.

I really liked this idea for poem. It’s simple, fun, and can convey a lot of my personal feelings, morals, and life ideas easily. I don’t always think that length is the most important thing in life. I figured I shouldn’t write my poem for my poetry manuscript like this and the next best thing would be to write it on here!

The Killers - When You Were Young

When You Were Young by The Killers

In the song, “When You Were Young” by the Killers, there are a variety of images, some figurative language, and of course voice. They are all used to make emotion and help people understand the point of the lyrics. When I listen to this song I see a man watching from the outside as the girl he loves falls in love with another man and loses control of his relationship with her. Of course there is hyperbole because there are extreme over exaggerations on the situation because the guy probably isn’t the devil which the lines “doesn’t look a thing like Jesus” and “they say the devils water it aint so sweet” which means he isn’t holy, or a good person, and that the girl is dipping into sin with this other guy. As far as images, there is “burning down the skyline on the back of a hurricane” which came across as an image of turmoil and loss of control where the relationship was lost. There is also an image of a mountain “can we climb this mountain” and is followed by “higher now than ever before.” This is essentially saying that they have a big problem and that they don’t know if they will be to make it through it. As far as voice, well it’s the Killers. They use a lot of figurative language and images to make the listener of the song really think in order to truly understand what is actually going on. They want listener to know what’s going on but not directly. The voice is definitely informal and when actually listening to the song can hear a sense of turmoil and fear. All of these rhetorical devices are used in order to provoke feeling in the listener and keep the song and its meaning interesting.

My Mother by Ellen Bryant Voigt

This poem, “My Mother” by Ellen Bryant Voigt, stuck out to me because of the title and its first line, “my mother my mother my mother she.” I’m very close to my mother and I think that is part of the reason why I was able to relate with the poem because from my perspective the person who is writing this poem lost their mother. I think that is the purpose, it comes across as almost a recollection of a childhood that was good and fully influenced by the speaker’s mother. I definitely think that the mother is gravely ill or has already passed away. I think the intended audience for this poem is honestly anyone willing to listen and anyone that is able to relate. I think that the general content of this poem is unimportant. It goes on and on about how this persons mother was such a large part of his or her life the imagery is all very positive and the words bring to life warm and thoughtful memories. The poem goes on and on in almost a stream of consciousness and lacks any forms of punctuation or capitalization throughout. This is what leads me to believe that, unfortunately, the mother has passed because people often go through and rethink all the happy thoughts and the childhood and the friendships that they had with a person who is now gone. The lack of punctuation leads me to believe that they are incoherently rambling on about the great times they had with their mother and all of the imagery helps keep her image alive.

Woods by Bruce Willard

The Poem is called “Woods” by Bruce Willard. The poem is interesting because of the picture that I was given by the poem. First off, this poem takes place in a cabin in the woods, I saw the person who was reading this as older and alone living out in the woods. He is cooking his dinner on a cold night, soup to be exact. He talks about the ingredients he is putting into the soup and how the fire is hot. I don’t feel that there is a particular audience of this poem and I felt that the reason this poem was written was to just give an interesting story on something. Now, as far as the author using imagery, line breaks, and figurative language, he does use a little of all three in his poem. In the last couple of lines he talks about how the “flames banking against the cool grate of night,” this is an example of personification; which is giving human like characteristics to things that aren’t human. There are a couple of interesting things that Willard does with the lines. There are more lines in the first stanza in the second two stanzas which always causes me to read the longer stanza slower and the pace is a lot longer, however, in the last two stanzas the pace picks up because the fact that they are shorter and have fewer lines. Willard also breaks lines in irregular places a couple times to show emphasis on certain words such as when “I stir to the point “ ends lines and starts with “sweet.” This really puts an emphasis on the word sweet and how sweet moves into “sour” from that. There is also a fair amount of imagery in this poem. Willard gives off a lot of words that trigger senses, such as “kindled” and “sweet becomes savory-sour.” Kindled gives off heat and warmth as a word and goes on the sense of touch. “Sweet becomes savory sour” is a sense of taste and really helps the reader imagine the soup. There is also a lot of description and images of what goes into the soup in the first stanza, personally I’m writing this on a bus (which has Wi-Fi, it’s so cool) and I’m starving and that really played for me and started to make me crave food.

How I Understand Eternity - Poetic Line

I decided to take a look at the poem “How I Understand Eternity” by Brian Swann. It is definitely the most interesting to me when it comes to looking at the way the lines effect the poem. Personally, I don’t really find poetic line to be all that interesting to me and I don’t pick up on it too well at first glance. However, in this particular poem the way that the lines work stands out a lot more to me for a multitude of reasons. I think that there is no audience to this poem, that the person speaking about the poem is talking to himself, telling himself how he understands eternity. I almost feel that an insane person is telling himself this to keep his or herself sane; this would be the purpose of the poem. Now! The lines of the poem standout because the fact that they are indented so oddly, the first line is normal but the second is indented, every other line in the poem is indented. Swann starts off talking about something and takes like a pause midsentence about what he was saying!

I take a look before floating to the Cretaceous where colors are now butterflies and beetles shaping themselves to flowers of sassafras and magnolia. (Lines 3-7)

In this excerpt his pauses in a sentence are very evident. He does this to make the reader (us) really think about each word, each though, each idea. His punctuation is very normal though, the sentences aren't weird. Overall, I really enjoyed this poem and I think that the lines really helped me fully take in the thoughts of Swann’s work.

“Consciousness"

I was on the fence about writing about “Consciousness” by Jane Miller because I also liked the imagery presented in “Rain.” However, after a couple of re-reads I decided that “Consciousness” really did present me with a better picture and feeling through its imagery. When I read the description of this great creature, with great confidence and the “thunder by flapping wings” I thought of a great legendary creature. The talking about cowboys and moonshine lead me to believe that this was a Native American tale. I think the reader would be an old Native American story teller speaking to the youth of the tribe. The purpose of this could be more so the dying of a culture. They talk about a mighty creature with who is big and I can sense a lot of nature in this poem. They poem gives an image of fire, lightening, and thunder all to describe this bird. I think that this bird is a representation of the Native American tribes. The cowboys with the moonshine are a new element that is introduced. The legend slowly fades away and there are rumors of a great bird on a barn sprawled out so that its mighty wingspan can be displayed for everyone to see and there are men standing next to it for scale. Again this is saying that the Native Americans were once so big, alive, and powerful but was eventually killed and now looked on by the rest of the world. Unfortunately something that was once so strong and so beautiful is pinned down helpless and dying.

Water Table

I decided to read “Water Table” because the title was interesting to me because I originally though it to mean a sort of equilibrium, seeing as the water table is where water pressure and atmospheric pressure comes together. After a thorough reading I saw the speaker as someone who wanted to end their life and go somewhere else. I saw them wanting to end their life through the description of bursting behind a rectory in silence with nobody knowing. I deducted they wanted to go somewhere else because they talked about how water was going to be moved through evaporation from a pound and into an aquifer. I think the intended audience could be maybe someone who found the body of the person after they might have taking their life or written to a psychiatrist who is supposed to help the person. I think that this poem is either writing to someone trying to make their need for equilibrium, completeness, a cycle or maybe even a cry for help. My first reactions to this poem were kind of weird, I didn’t really understand it and it was kind of dark and creepy. I read it again and that is when I perceived it as a cry for help. The author of this poem uses a lot of words that help portray an image like burst, bits, overheated, and crystalize. These words help the reader to really get an clear image of what the writer is trying to portray, This use of imagery is often used in trying to help force a sense of emotion and feeling into a work.

My Writing Play List

Music helps to define us as individuals. We all have a different taste, a different ear, a different look one what should be played more (or less) on the internet. I have chosen a couple songs that I really enjoy and help me get in the mood to get work done, whether it be writing or even working out.

My first song is something that really got me listening to a new genre of music, chill-step, techno, dub-step whatever it is you would like to call it. I thoroughly enjoy listening to it while I'm doing homework or thinking about much of everything really. The majority of my songs on my play list are going to be without any real words. This is what draws me to the group, The Glitch Mob. This group creates a relaxing music style that isn't too distracting from my work. They have a variety of different musics meant to either relax or pump up the person, this can sometimes be reflected in my writing. An example of this is using quick short rapid sentences in a paragraph to force the reader to move at a quicker pace or the other way around using long sentences.

I think my playlist stands out because it is a representation of my taste in music and nobody on this planet will have the exact taste in music as me.
