Back when television had a reputation of rotting your brain I had to get permission before I watched a TV show from my hippy mom. That meant the TV Guide was one of my favourite sections of the newspaper. One week the iconic photo of Laura's face was the cover story, I had never seen a photo so graphic and disturbing on a magazine that was supposed to sit on your coffee table for a week. I was surprised when my mom said I could watch it because it was made by a film director and she knew I loved the movies. I remember watching the pilot with friends who were told 'Hell No' by their well intentioned parents, I mean, we were only 12 and this was a show about a murdered teenager. My mother was in the kitchen washing dishes and came running when she heard Sarah Palmer scream while on the phone with Leland. She was instantly captivated, stopped herself from telling me to turn it off, sat down and watched the rest of the episode with us in stunned silence. Most of my friends said that it wasn't for them after that night but my mother and I watched every single moody, confusing, hilarious, scary episode together. She knew her limit when we rented Fire Walk With Me. And even though she tapped out when I graduated from high school she bought me the VHS box set, one of my prized possessions till it was lent out and it never returned. I spent an insane amount of money at HMV on a special order of the Japanese DVD of the pilot which was not a part of the box set. I waited weeks for it. I watched FWWM then the whole series then FWWM at least twice a year all through film school and consumed everything I could about the show and it's creators. To say it was an influence on my life would put it mildly. I would say it's one of the reasons I'm a screenwriter. Tonight I get to go back to Twin Peaks, my mom isn't able to join me, but I think she has an inside line on all of the worlds great mysteries. And no matter what happens, good or bad, I will watch every second.

Altitude sickness is real. For the past week I was hoping the symptoms would go away in time for the climb. I was honest about how I felt to the tour leaders but there was a part of me that still thought I was psyching myself out, that it was just nerves and I would be fine once I started the trek. We started with a little jaunt to see a ruin and I immediately knew something was wrong. I pushed aside my embarrassment and pulled out of the hike. I've spent the last 24 hours in bed with a fever.
