When I was little and had undiagnosed anxiety and therefore worried about this a lot, my mom taught me how having a thought is different from “entertaining a thought”. When a thought you don’t like pops into your brain, imagine it standing on your doorstep ringing the doorbell. Do you look out the peephole and go “gross, that’s not the kind of person I want to be”, and tell it to go away? Or do you open the door, invite it in, and make dinner for it? That helped me a lot.

as a philosophy enjoyer who likes to "entertain" various thoughts I do not actually agree with for the purposes of understanding opposing ideologies better, it's also worth noting that entertaining a thought is not the same as adopting it. You can think about something for a while, favorably even, and then tell it to go home once it's overstayed its welcome. You can just decide it's time to stop, and say, "actually, nevermind, I don't like that thought anymore, it's been going on for too long, I'm going to think something else." The thought being a bad houseguest and refusing to leave you alone when you decide you'd actually rather not have it move in is not your fault.
